In the United States, selling Bitcoin you hold as an investment can create a taxable capital gain or loss. The basic calculation is the sale proceeds, adjusted for costs of the sale, minus the Bitcoin’s adjusted cost basis. How long you held the units, which units you sold, and the quality of your records can all affect the result.
This guide covers the general U.S. federal rules for individuals holding Bitcoin as a capital asset. It does not calculate anyone’s tax bill or resolve state, local, or non-U.S. tax rules.

Why selling Bitcoin can trigger capital gains tax
The IRS treats digital assets such as Bitcoin as property for federal income-tax purposes, so general property transaction rules apply. The IRS states: “Digital assets are treated as property, and the general tax principles applicable to all property transactions also apply to transactions involving digital assets.” (IRS digital-asset FAQ, answer added December 15, 2025.)

The difference is a capital gain or loss if the Bitcoin was held as a capital asset. Other kinds of dispositions can also have tax consequences, so a sale for dollars is not the only transaction to consider.

- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
How to calculate gain or loss on a Bitcoin sale
Capital gain or loss = amount realized − adjusted basis.
Amount realized generally starts with the cash you receive and includes the fair market value of any services received to effect the sale. It is reduced by transaction costs allocable to disposing of the Bitcoin, such as commissions, transfer taxes, or transaction (“gas”) fees. A fee paid only to move Bitcoin between your own wallets is not a cost of effecting a sale under the IRS FAQ.

For Bitcoin you purchased, basis is generally its U.S.-dollar cost. Acquisition fees, commissions, transfer taxes, and other acquisition costs are included in basis under the Form 8949 instructions. Bitcoin received through another event may have a different basis; purchase price is not a universal basis rule for every situation. See the IRS digital-asset FAQ and the Form 8949 instructions.
Illustration: If adjusted basis is $10,000 and amount realized after allocable sale costs is $14,000, the arithmetic difference is a $4,000 gain. This example is not a tax calculation; the correct basis, amount realized, tax character, and treatment of losses depend on the facts and applicable rules.

How the holding period affects the result
For a capital asset, a gain or loss is generally short-term if you held the Bitcoin for one year or less, and long-term if you held it for more than one year. The holding period starts the day after acquisition and ends on the disposition date. Consult the instructions for the tax year you are filing; the IRS explains the rule in its digital-asset FAQ and Form 8949 instructions.
When Bitcoin was acquired in multiple lots at different times, the units identified as sold can change both basis and holding period. The IRS describes specific-identification requirements and default rules that depend on the transaction date and whether the units were held in a custodial broker account or an unhosted wallet. The guidance also distinguishes sales during 2025 from transactions after December 31, 2025. For transactions after that date, the broker must receive the required unit identification, or a qualifying standing instruction, by the time of sale under the conditions described by the IRS. If specific identification requirements are not met, an earliest-acquired-units default rule applies in the relevant account or wallet. Check the IRS FAQ that applies to your transaction date and custody arrangement before relying on a unit-selection method.

What records to keep
Keep records that support how you calculated each disposition, including purchases, receipts, sales, exchanges, and other transfers or dispositions. The IRS identifies information such as transaction type, date and time, units, U.S.-dollar fair market value, and basis as relevant to determining gain or loss. Retain documentation for fees and for any unit-identification method you use.
- Acquisition records showing when and how you received the Bitcoin, units, dollar value, and acquisition costs.
- Sale or disposition records showing date, units, proceeds or other value received, and sale-related costs.
- Wallet and platform records sufficient to connect the units disposed of with their acquisition history.
- Basis calculations and supporting records for any identification of particular units.
A statement from one exchange or broker may not cover activity in your other accounts or wallets. Missing or incomplete records can make it harder to establish basis and holding period; a broker statement does not establish unknown basis on your behalf.

How to report Bitcoin sales on a federal return
For Bitcoin held as a capital asset, the IRS generally directs individuals to report sales, exchanges, and other dispositions on Form 8949, then summarize capital gains and deductible capital losses on Schedule D (Form 1040). Form 8949 is also used to reconcile amounts on Forms 1099-B, 1099-DA, or substitute statements with amounts reported on the return. Current forms may provide exceptions, so follow the instructions for the specific tax year you are filing.
Capital losses are subject to tax-law limitations on deductibility. The general calculation alone does not determine how much loss you can use on a return; consult the relevant tax-year instructions or a qualified tax professional for your circumstances.
What Form 1099-DA tells you—and what it may not
Broker reporting on Form 1099-DA begins for covered digital-asset transactions on or after January 1, 2025, according to the IRS’s 2024 announcement. In a January 2026 reminder, the IRS said many Forms 1099-DA for 2025 sales will not include basis. You remain responsible for calculating basis and determining gain or loss, and for reporting related income, gains, or losses even if you do not receive the form (IRS reminder, January 2026).

When to get help
Consider consulting a tax professional with digital-asset experience if your acquisition records are missing, you have many transactions across platforms or wallets, or you are uncertain which units were sold or how to report a disposition. Tax software can help organize dates, units, values, and basis, but it cannot establish basis that your records do not support. This article describes the general federal framework, not an individualized tax determination.
