How Capcom Turned Arcade Know-How Into Global Gaming Franchises

Capcom’s journey from Osaka arcade-machine roots to a global game company combined arcade expertise, long-running franchises, digital sales, and licensing.

Capcom grew from an Osaka business making arcade machines into a global game company by carrying its arcade expertise into home gaming, building enduring franchises, and finding ways to keep those properties earning beyond a single release. Its history stretches back to 1979, four years before Capcom Co., Ltd. was established.

Capcom’s roots began before the company was established

Capcom’s corporate history starts with I.R.M. Corporation, established in May 1979 in Matsubara, Osaka, to develop and sell electric applied game machines. Capcom Co., Ltd. was established in Osaka in 1983. Capcom’s official history traces the company’s roots to that earlier arcade-machine business.

Capcom says its early ambition was international, and it focused on high-spec arcade games. Its proprietary CP System circuit board supported that work. The company describes its later move into home video games as an extension of the technical and creative capabilities developed in arcades, rather than a departure from them. Capcom’s 2025 Integrated Report presents this transition as a foundation for its wider game business.

Three franchises developed across different eras

Street Fighter brought arcade competition to the forefront

Street Fighter II became a major arcade hit in 1991. Capcom says it helped establish the fighting-game genre. The series later became one of the three core properties in the company’s 2025 growth strategy, alongside Resident Evil and Monster Hunter. Capcom’s history and its 2025 strategy discussion describe these milestones and priorities.

Resident Evil established a lasting survival-horror series

Debuting in 1996, Resident Evil became a defining survival-horror property for Capcom. The company reported 170 million cumulative units sold for the series in its 2025 Integrated Report. That is a series total reported by Capcom, not a figure for one game or a sales estimate independent of the company.

Monster Hunter built around cooperative hunts

Launched in 2004, Monster Hunter centered on cooperative hunting and developed into another of Capcom’s principal franchises. Capcom reported 120 million cumulative units sold for the series in its 2025 Integrated Report.

The franchises illustrate different ways Capcom built on its catalog: arcade competition, survival horror, and cooperative play. Their combined role in the company’s current plans reflects accumulated IP, not a claim that any one series alone explains Capcom’s growth.

Releases are only one part of Capcom’s business model

Games can keep selling after launch

Capcom describes digital distribution as a way for games to contribute over a longer period through catalog sales. A release can therefore remain part of the business after its launch window, alongside newer titles. This approach makes the existing library a continuing asset rather than treating each game as a one-time event.

One property can reach audiences in other formats

In 1994, Capcom established what it calls its “Single Content Multiple Usage” strategy, initially using Street Fighter in film and animation. The company has since pursued film and animation projects based on its game properties, as well as licensing collaborations and other uses of its IP. Capcom’s 2025 Integrated Report describes this strategy as a way to extend the reach and use of its content beyond games.

What Capcom’s current strategy prioritizes

Capcom describes itself as an Osaka-based game software developer. Its stated business covers planning, development, manufacturing, sale, and distribution of home, mobile, and arcade games, as well as amusement-arcade operations. Its company profile lists those activities.

Technology, development capacity, and live experiences support the franchises

In-house development tools and teams

Capcom says its RE ENGINE is an in-house game-development engine designed for multiple platforms. Its 2025 development strategy also cites technical capability, creative commitment, a development workforce of more than 2,800, and accumulated IP as strengths. These are company descriptions of its own tools, staff, and capabilities. Capcom’s development-strategy materials provide that account.

Esports and licensing keep properties visible

Capcom also uses esports, licensing, exhibitions, and location-based or partner-developed experiences to extend awareness of its properties. The company reported that the March 2025 Capcom Cup 11 and Street Fighter League World Championship event in Japan drew 14,000 in-person attendees and more than 10 million online views. Capcom also says its Pro Tour has been held in up to 160 countries and regions. These are company-reported event and reach figures. The COO’s 2025 discussion covers these activities.

A recent release shows the scale of the catalog strategy

Monster Hunter Wilds was released in February 2025. Capcom reported that it sold 10 million units in its first month, calling it a company record. The figure is Capcom’s report of the game’s one-month sales, not a continuing monthly rate or an independently verified current total. Capcom’s 2025 Integrated Report records the milestone.

That launch sits within a broader model: new major releases draw attention, established franchises supply a durable library, digital sales extend the life of older games, and licensing and related experiences put the IP to use elsewhere. Capcom’s path from arcade machines to global gaming power has relied on connecting those pieces over time.
