A capacitive touch sensor detects how a finger changes an electric field around an electrode. The finger does not need to conduct through the glass or plastic covering the sensor: the cover insulates the finger from the electrode while allowing their electric fields to interact. A controller measures the resulting change in capacitance and treats it as a touch when it crosses a configured threshold.
What changes when a finger approaches?
An electrode beneath the screen or button has capacitance with nearby conductors even when nobody is touching it. The insulating cover above it acts as a dielectric: it keeps the finger from making electrical contact, but does not block the electric field. When a finger approaches, it changes the field and the electrode’s effective capacitance. The sensor controller detects that change rather than sensing pressure or current passing through the cover.

The signal is small and depends on the sensor’s construction. Texas Instruments’ versioned CapTIvate Technology Guide 1.50.00.00 gives 1–10 pF as a typical added touch capacitance in its self-capacitance description and less than 1 pF as a typical touch-related mutual-capacitance change. These are guide examples, not universal specifications; actual changes depend on electrode geometry, cover material and thickness, and the measurement circuit.

How the two common methods measure touch
The key distinction is what the controller measures: one electrode relative to ground, or the coupling between two electrodes.

| Method | Electrode arrangement | Typical touch response | Field and layout implications |
|---|---|---|---|
| Self-capacitance | One electrode measured relative to circuit or earth ground | A finger generally increases the apparent capacitance; TI gives 1–10 pF as a typical added touch capacitance in its versioned guide. | The field extends around the electrode, which can produce a strong response but also interact with neighboring structures or keys. |
| Mutual capacitance | A transmit (Tx) electrode couples to a receive (Rx) electrode | A finger disturbs the coupling and changes transferred charge. TI gives less than 1 pF as a typical touch-related change; the measured sign depends on the circuit and convention. | The field is concentrated more between Tx and Rx. Separate intersections can form sensing nodes in a dense matrix. |
Self-capacitance: one electrode against ground
The controller charges a sense electrode to a known potential and measures the resulting charge or apparent capacitance. A finger adds coupling between the electrode and the surrounding electrical environment, so the measured self-capacitance generally rises. Microchip describes this charge-transfer approach in its Peripheral Touch Controller (PTC) documentation.
Mutual capacitance: coupling between Tx and Rx
The controller drives pulses on a transmit electrode and measures how much charge couples to a receive electrode. A finger disrupts the electric field between them, changing the transferred charge. TI describes the usual effect as reduced coupling. Microchip’s design guide explains that the finger can also act as a third electrode and that field and ground-return effects influence what the circuit measures. For that reason, there is no universal sign or size for the measured change across all mutual-capacitance implementations. Microchip Developer Help summarizes the arrangement: “The mutual-capacitance method uses a pair of sensing electrodes (X-Y lines).”

How a measured change becomes a touch or location
A controller repeatedly acquires sensor readings and compares them with a baseline or configured touch threshold. A change that crosses the threshold is reported as a touch. This is an interpretation of a measured delta, not a fixed capacitance value that applies to every device.

For a button, the electrode’s reading is usually reduced to a simple detected or not-detected state. The threshold determines how large a change must be before the controller reports a press.

Touchscreen or sensor array
A touchscreen scans many electrodes or electrode intersections. In a mutual-capacitance matrix, each Tx/Rx intersection is a separately measurable node. The pattern of nodes whose readings change lets the controller estimate where a finger is; multiple responding nodes can support multi-touch. The result is a location inferred from the sensor pattern, not a camera-like image of the finger.
What affects sensitivity and reliability?
- Cover material and thickness: The overlay separates the finger from the electrode. A thicker cover generally weakens and spreads the interaction, reducing the touch-related change. Electrode design must suit the cover.
- Electrode shape and spacing: Geometry shapes the electric field and the baseline capacitance. Layout also affects how distinctly nearby keys or touchscreen nodes respond.
- Parasitic capacitance and nearby ground: Unwanted capacitance can make the finger-induced change a smaller fraction of the total measurement. Nearby ground can draw field lines away from the touch surface.
- Measurement method and panel layout: Self-capacitance’s broader field can interact with neighboring structures. Mutual-capacitance generally confines more of the interaction between Tx and Rx; its touch changes may be smaller, while distinct nodes support dense matrices.
- Baseline and threshold: The controller must distinguish touch-related change from the normal sensor reading. Threshold selection affects when a touch is recognized.
- Noise, water rejection, power, and latency: These are interdependent design goals. Improving one can require trade-offs in sensitivity or other behavior, so neither sensing method is universally best.
Microchip’s Capacitive Touch Sensor Design Guide (AN2934) covers electrode layout, thresholds, shielding, and touch covers; its design guidance emphasizes that sensor geometry and configuration matter alongside the sensing method.

Why a finger works through glass or plastic
Glass and plastic are insulators, but an insulator can still participate in an electric field. The cover functions as a dielectric between the finger and sensor electrode. The finger changes the field and therefore the electrode’s capacitance without needing direct contact or a conductive path through the panel. Increasing the distance by using a thicker cover generally weakens that coupling, which is why cover thickness is part of sensor design rather than just a cosmetic choice.
