How Canada Uses Claude: What the Data Shows by Province and Task

Anthropic’s February 2026 Claude.ai sample put Canada eighth in global use. Ontario led in conversation volume, British Columbia in population-adjusted adoption, and translation stood out against peer countries.

In Anthropic’s analysis of Claude.ai conversations sampled in February 2026, Canada accounted for 2.6% of global consumer use, ranking eighth by volume. Its Anthropic AI Usage Index was 4.4—more than four times the level expected from population alone. The findings describe activity on Claude.ai, not a representative survey of Canadians or a measure of AI use across all services.

What Anthropic’s Canada figures measure

The figures come from Anthropic’s analysis of its own Claude.ai conversations from February 2026, published on July 14, 2026. The analysis reports conversation shares and population-adjusted adoption. They show how Claude.ai was used in that sample; they do not establish how many Canadians use AI, or whether the same patterns apply to other AI services. Anthropic’s analysis attributes its provincial comparisons to the Anthropic Economic Index and Statistics Canada.

Anthropic announced Claude.ai, its iOS app, API, and Claude Team in Canada on June 5, 2024, saying, “Claude is now available in Canada.” That is a historical launch announcement, not a statement of current pricing or a complete account of today’s availability. Anthropic’s supported-regions page currently lists Canada for Claude.ai and commercial API access.

How use differs across provinces

Ontario produced the largest share of Canadian Claude.ai conversations in the February 2026 sample. British Columbia ranked first when usage was adjusted for population. These measures answer different questions: conversation share reflects volume, while the population-adjusted figure compares observed use with what population alone would predict.

Province Share of Canadian conversations Population-adjusted use
Ontario 43.9% 1.1 times expected
Quebec 20.8% Not stated in the cited analysis
British Columbia 18.9% 1.4 times expected
Alberta 10.2% Not stated in the cited analysis

Shares are of Canadian Claude.ai conversations in Anthropic’s February 2026 sample; population-adjusted values compare observed use with a population-proportional expectation. Values are reported in Anthropic’s Economic Index analysis. The cited figures do not establish that residents of one province use Claude more often individually; conversation share is not a user count.

Personal use leads, with work and coursework also substantial

Anthropic’s broad classification puts personal tasks first across provinces: personal use accounts for 44%–51% of conversations per province, while work use accounts for about 34%–40%. Coursework makes up the remainder in that grouping. Those ranges vary by province and should not be read as one Canada-wide split or as exact shares for any single province. Anthropic’s analysis gives personal examples such as health-information searches, product research, recipes, and home repairs. Work examples include software troubleshooting, drafting work emails, and building business applications.

Translation stands out against peer countries

Compared with Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States, document translation is the most distinctive Canadian use in Anthropic’s comparison. Coursework, coding assistance, and resume drafting are also relatively prominent. These are relative differences within the study’s task groupings, not evidence that these activities are necessarily the most common Claude tasks in Canada overall.

Workplace email, marketing content, legal assistance, cooking, home maintenance, and health questions are relatively less represented than in the comparison countries. “Less represented” does not mean Canadians do not use Claude for them; it means those categories form a smaller share in the comparison described by Anthropic’s analysis.

Why translation may vary by province

Anthropic reports that translation and editing appear more often in provinces with a larger share of public-administration employment. New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Quebec are identified as having both relatively high public-administration employment shares and larger translation-assistance shares. The analysis suggests official bilingualism requirements may help explain this association, but it does not establish that bilingualism causes higher Claude translation use.

What organizations in Canada should know about data

Commercial Claude for Work terms are distinct from consumer-account rules. Anthropic says the customer organization controls data submitted by users and Anthropic acts as processor. Commercial inputs and outputs are not used to train models by default, though feedback or an explicit opt-in can be exceptions. An organization’s agreement, settings, and internal policies govern its account; its Primary Owner may manage or export associated data. Administrators should verify the applicable agreement and configuration rather than assume every deployment has identical controls. See Anthropic’s commercial terms and data-use explanation.

Anthropic’s description of commercial infrastructure names processing in selected countries in the United States, Europe, Asia, and Australia, and storage in US data centers unless otherwise agreed. The cited material does not establish Canadian data residency. Organizations with residency or jurisdiction requirements should confirm their contract and current configuration directly. See Anthropic’s infrastructure overview.

For consumer accounts, Anthropic says chats and coding sessions may be used to improve models if a user opts in, if a conversation is flagged for safety review, or if the user otherwise explicitly opts in. Those consumer conditions should not be confused with the commercial default. Anthropic describes these rules in its consumer data-use policy.
