Stop turning as soon as the driver slips. First identify the controller and fit the correct bit; then try low-risk ways to grip the screw before considering destructive methods. The right approach depends on how much of the screw head remains accessible, and no extraction trick is guaranteed.
Identify the controller and screw before opening it
Controller generations can use different screw types and have different screw locations. Do not assume one bit fits every game controller. Check a repair guide for the exact model before removing the shell.

Xbox controllers
iFixit identifies a TR8 Torx Security driver for Xbox 360, standard Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S controllers, but notes that the best fit can vary with model and screw condition. A TR8 security bit has a hole for the pin in the screw; a standard Torx bit is different. Depending on age and condition, a T9/TR9 may fit better, so verify engagement before applying force. Some screw locations are hidden. For example, the Model 1914 guide places a middle screw beneath the battery-bay sticker. Find all model-specific screws before trying to pry the shell apart.

Other controller models
Other controller families may use different screw types. The DualShock 4 guide recommends stabilizing the controller on a soft surface and cautions that procedures and parts can differ by model. Follow the guide for your exact controller rather than applying another model’s instructions: iFixit DualShock 4 CUH-ZCT1 guide.
Work up from the least destructive method
- Stop when the driver slips. A bit that does not catch can damage the recess further. Try a slightly smaller or larger suitable bit, or another appropriate shape, but stop if it does not engage immediately. iFixit’s guidance is direct: “If the bit doesn’t catch the screw instantly, do not continue.” (iFixit, “How to Remove a Stripped Screw”.)
- Seat the best-fitting bit carefully. Use a bit that fits closely, press it fully into the screw head, and hold the driver perpendicular to the screw. Apply controlled pressure and turn steadily. If it cams out, stop rather than forcing it. iFixit’s screw-prevention guidance emphasizes fit, alignment, and seating.
- Try a rubber band if some recess remains. Stretch a piece over the screw head, seat a correctly sized driver through it, and turn gently. This can add grip, but it is only a low-cost attempt, not a reliable extraction method. If the bit slips, stop.
- Use screw-extracting pliers only if the head is exposed. Grip the accessible head and turn it carefully. Once the screw loosens, finish with a screwdriver if possible. Pliers are not suitable when the head is recessed or cannot be gripped.
- Reserve cutting a slot for a last resort. A rotary tool can cut a small slot for a flathead driver, but this is destructive and can damage nearby plastic or electronics. If the screw is recessed or close to a circuit board, stop and consider professional repair instead of improvised cutting or drilling.
Choose an approach based on access and risk

If cutting is unavoidable, protect the controller
Wear eye protection, use low power, shield nearby components, and make only a small cut. Metal fragments can damage electronics, so clear debris thoroughly before reassembly. If you cannot shield the board or clean the area completely, leave the repair to a professional.
