The built-in controls are easy to change later, and their exact locations or availability can vary by macOS version.
1. Choose a wallpaper and a color palette
Start with the largest visual element: your desktop background. Open Apple menu > System Settings > Wallpaper and choose one of the built-in options or add a photo or image of your own. You can also set an image from Safari, Finder, or Photos. Depending on the wallpaper, macOS may offer dynamic, light-or-dark, or shuffled presentation. See Apple’s wallpaper instructions.

Pick one or two accent colors that appear in the image, then use them sparingly for the interface and folder accents. A soft pastel wallpaper can pair with a gentle accent; a darker image may work better with a contrasting interface. Keep enough contrast behind desktop icons and text so they remain easy to see.

2. Match the macOS appearance
Open Apple menu > System Settings > Appearance. Choose Light, Dark, or Auto, then select an accent color and an icon or widget style if those controls are available in your macOS version. Try the choices against your wallpaper rather than choosing them in isolation. Apple describes these controls in its Mac personalization guide.

If visual clarity matters more than a perfectly coordinated palette, prioritize legibility. macOS also provides accessibility options for changing text and pointer size; Apple’s guide covers those options alongside appearance settings.
3. Customize folders with color, icons, or emoji
Use folder styling to make a few important locations stand out as well as look coordinated. In Finder, Control-click a folder and choose Customize Folder. Depending on macOS version, you can assign a color and add an icon or emoji. For example, use a distinctive color for active projects and a small icon for personal folders. This can make folders easier to recognize at a glance without decorating every folder differently.

4. Add a few useful widgets
Widgets can live on the desktop or in Notification Center. To add desktop widgets, Control-click an empty area of the desktop and choose Edit Widgets. Add the widgets you want, arrange them, and adjust their size or displayed information when the widget provides those options. Apple’s widget instructions explain adding, positioning, and editing them.

For a calm desktop, choose only widgets that you will actually check—perhaps a calendar, clock, or weather widget—and keep their colors and sizes visually consistent where possible. Widget appearance and editing options depend on the widget and macOS version.
Using iPhone widgets on your Mac
iPhone widgets on Mac require iOS 17 or later on the iPhone, the same Apple Account on both devices, and that the devices are nearby or connected to the same Wi-Fi network. Some widgets may open their app on the iPhone instead of the Mac. These are compatibility conditions, not guarantees that every iPhone widget will behave like a native Mac widget.

5. Finish with the Dock and menu bar
Adjust the Dock so it complements the desktop rather than competing with it. You can resize it, move it to another screen edge, choose whether it hides, and add or remove app icons. Keep frequently used apps there and remove items you rarely open. Menu-bar controls can be selected in System Settings; the available options depend on macOS and installed features. A simple way to keep the design cohesive
- Visual effect: Let the wallpaper set the palette, then use accent colors and folder styling as small highlights.
- Legibility: Check that desktop icons, widget text, and menu-bar items remain easy to distinguish against their backgrounds.
- Usefulness: Keep widgets and Dock apps that give you information or quick access you genuinely need.
- Effort: Built-in settings are straightforward to revise; you can swap or remove a custom wallpaper through Wallpaper settings.
- Compatibility: Check version and device requirements before relying on iPhone widgets.
Apple Support describes Mac personalization as including changes to macOS’s look and feel, the desktop, Dock, menu bar, text, and pointer size. The practical goal is to make those choices work together while keeping the interface comfortable to use.
