Light may energize a molecule or change a catalyst; electricity can drive electron transfer; and, in a particular circuit-dependent system, opening or closing a circuit can control a galvanic reaction. What the switch does depends on the reaction and setup.
What “flipping a switch” means in chemistry
It is a metaphor for applying a controlled input that starts, changes, or stops a process. The input might supply energy to a reaction, create a reactive form of a molecule, or alter a catalyst so it behaves differently. A switch can also control whether a specific electrical circuit is complete.

These are distinct mechanisms, not interchangeable versions of one universal technique. A 2019 review surveys light, electricity, mechanical force, and flow as ways to facilitate chemical transformations, while noting the role of reactor design and flow processes in their development: Nature Reviews Chemistry.
How light can control a reaction
Light can supply energy
A photocatalyst absorbs light and reaches an excited state that can participate in a chemical transformation. In some systems, irradiation turns an inactive precatalyst into an active photoexcited state. Light is therefore part of the reaction mechanism, not merely an on/off signal sent to an otherwise unchanged catalyst.

Light can switch a catalyst’s properties
Photoswitchable catalysis works differently: light triggers a reversible photochemical change that alters the catalyst’s intrinsic properties. A catalyst may be switched between forms with different activity. A 2022 review distinguishes this approach from photocatalysis, in which light creates an active excited state from an inactive precatalyst: Communications Chemistry.
Dithienylethene is one molecular scaffold studied for photoswitchable catalysts. Its light-driven photoelectrocyclization is described as rapid and reversible, and thermally forbidden; appropriately chosen light pulses can be used to activate or deactivate catalyst designs. These are specialized molecular systems, not a general recipe for switching any reaction with a lamp. See the ACS Catalysis perspective.

How electricity can control a reaction
Electrosynthesis uses electrical input
In electrosynthesis, electrical energy facilitates a chemical transformation through electron transfer at electrodes. Like photoredox catalysis, electrochemistry can provide access to high-energy intermediates such as radicals. The two methods have different physical chemistry, however, and should not be treated as interchangeable ways to achieve the same result. A critical comparison in Chemical Reviews examines those differences.

A circuit switch controls only the system it is part of
A patent for one hydrogen-generation system describes switching a galvanic reaction by opening or closing its electrical circuit. That example shows how a circuit can control a particular design; it does not mean a household switch can start or stop arbitrary chemical reactions. The patent describes that specific system: US20090173620A1.

Thorough safety rules, first-aid guidance, GHS labeling, and waste-disposal instructions are integrated throughout the manual so families can experiment confidently. An ideal gift for curious students, homeschoolers, and aspiring chemists ready to go beyond beginner kits.
Other inputs and the value of precise control
Mechanical force and flow can also facilitate chemical transformations. More broadly, external stimuli can provide spatial and temporal control: they may help determine where and when a chemical process occurs. Such control has been studied for applications including drug delivery; it does not by itself establish that a method is suitable for every application. See the review on spatial and temporal control of chemical processes.

- What is the input? Light, electrical potential or current, mechanical force, or flow?
- What does it do? Supply reaction energy, create an excited reactive species, change a catalyst’s structure or activity, or complete a circuit?
- Can the change be reversed? Some photoswitchable systems are designed to move between states; reversibility depends on the system.
- Where and when does control occur? The extent of spatial and temporal control depends on the stimulus and setup.
- Which reaction and apparatus are involved? The answer is specific to the chemistry; there is no basis for ranking one input as universally better.
The practical meaning of “on” is therefore system-specific: it might mean supplying energy, generating a reactive intermediate, changing a catalyst’s state, or enabling a circuit-dependent reaction.
