If your startup needs control over password-reset SMS, decide separately who writes the message, who delivers it, and who owns the security logic. An identity platform may manage account recovery while letting you customize some messages; a configurable phone provider may let you choose the SMS route. Neither choice removes your responsibility to design recovery safeguards.
What does “own the message” mean?
It can mean controlling the words users see, selecting the service that transports an SMS, or building the reset and abuse-prevention flow itself. Those are distinct decisions: message customization does not necessarily change the delivery provider, and provider choice does not transfer ownership of account-recovery security.

- Reset logic: Define identity checks, token handling, rate limits, recovery options, and failure behavior.
Which approach fits a startup?

These approaches solve different parts of the problem. A customizable message feature is not an SMS transport API; a provider-routing feature is not a complete recovery design; and a security key is an authentication factor, not an SMS service.

How to choose between message control and provider control
Choose managed messaging when the priority is a managed account flow
If you want the identity platform to handle much of account management and need to tailor user-facing text, start by checking exactly which message types and channels are customizable. Firebase documents password-reset message customization for email; that documentation alone does not establish equivalent SMS wording controls.

Choose custom provider routing when provider selection matters
If you need to route phone verification and password-reset messages through a chosen provider, Auth0 documents that capability. Because the provider configuration page labels it Early Access, confirm that it is enabled and supported for your tenant before committing to the architecture.
Choose a different recovery factor when SMS risk is a concern
Consider whether your app can support FIDO/WebAuthn, push, or authenticator-app OTP in the relevant authentication or recovery flows. Their presence in an account-security catalog does not establish that they can independently reset a password; map enrollment, lost-device handling, and fallback behavior before relying on them.

Keep SMS transport separate from recovery security
A messaging provider transports a message. Your application and identity configuration still need safeguards around reset requests and provider sends. Auth0 warns that attackers abusing signup flows when phone messaging is enabled can cause financial damage. Apply rate limits to reset activity and sends, monitor unusual volume, and plan for message-abuse costs.
SMS also depends on control of a phone number. A 2020 USENIX SOUPS paper describes cases in which control of a victim’s number enabled password resets. That is qualitative evidence of a risk, not a current estimate of how often it happens across services. Treat SMS as a potentially vulnerable recovery channel rather than the sole way to regain an account.

What should a reset alert say?
Keep credentials out of alert messages. A reset alert should identify the event and give the recipient a clear way to report an action they did not take. NIST SP 800-63B says: “The notification SHALL provide clear instructions, including contact information, in case the recipient repudiates the event associated with the notification.”
Make the reporting route usable without including a reset token or password in the notification. Treat the message as an alert, not as the credential that authorizes account access.

Implementation checklist
- Define the control you need. Decide whether the requirement is custom wording, a selected delivery provider, or ownership of the reset flow.
- Confirm the exact feature. Check the identity platform’s current documentation for the message type and channel you intend to customize or route. For Auth0 custom phone routing, verify Early Access availability in your tenant.
- Design recovery safeguards. Rate-limit reset requests and provider sends, watch for unusual send volume, and budget for potential abuse.
- Write an event alert, not a credential message. Identify that a reset was requested and provide a contact or reporting path for an unrecognized event.
- Provide another recovery path. Assess enrolled FIDO/WebAuthn, push, or authenticator-app options and define what happens when a user cannot use the enrolled factor.
- Validate delivery conditions before launch. Check current country coverage, sender registration, delivery conditions, and pricing with the relevant provider. These can vary and should not be inferred from feature documentation.
What to verify before committing
Feature availability, geographic coverage, sender registration, delivery behavior, and pricing are implementation-specific and can change. Verify them against current vendor documentation for your tenant and target countries; do not treat a documented integration as proof of universal availability or a particular cost.
