Under blue or red LED light, it helps transfer electrons to start a controlled radical polymerization process called PET-RAFT. The spinach is a source of the catalyst—not a material that turns directly into plastic.
How does chlorophyll start polymerization?
In the method reported by Shanmugam, Xu and Boyer in Chemical Science in 2015, visible light excites chlorophyll a. In the presence of a RAFT agent, the chlorophyll mediates photoinduced electron transfer (PET), which initiates reversible addition-fragmentation chain-transfer (RAFT) polymerization. RAFT is a controlled radical-polymerization technique; the light-responsive catalyst provides a way to start the reaction.

The paper reports experiments using blue LEDs with a peak wavelength of 461 nm and red LEDs with a peak wavelength of 635 nm. These are the wavelengths reported for the study, not a guarantee that any LED sold at the same nominal wavelength will reproduce its results. The catalyst, RAFT reagents, monomers, reaction conditions and purification all matter.

The authors report control over polymer molecular weights, polydispersities—the distribution of chain sizes in a sample—and polymer end-group functionality across a range of monomers. They assessed end-group fidelity using NMR and UV-vis spectroscopy and through chain-extension experiments, in which existing polymer chains are extended by adding more monomer. Those tests support a controlled laboratory polymerization result; they do not establish an industrial production process.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The study describes chlorophyll a extracted and purified from spinach leaves. It reports recovering 24 mg of chlorophyll a from 100 g of spinach leaves. Solvent extraction and purification were part of the experimental method, so this was not a simple process of shining a light on spinach and collecting plastic. What kinds of polymers were discussed?
A 2014 Chemistry World report on the work named poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) microgels as examples discussed by researcher Cyrille Boyer. Boyer noted that PMMA is commonly used for hip and knee replacements; that statement describes the polymer generally, not an implant made by this spinach-chlorophyll method. The report also discussed possible biomedical applications, which should be understood as potential uses rather than demonstrated clinical applications or approvals. Chemistry World’s report also quotes polymer expert Brent Sumerlin describing the approach as “biomimetic and sustainable.” That is his assessment, not a measured comparison of environmental impacts.

What the result does—and does not—show
- It shows: purified spinach-derived chlorophyll a can serve as a light-activated photocatalyst for PET-RAFT polymerization in the reported laboratory system.
- It does not show: that spinach leaves directly make plastic, that the process is ready for commercial-scale manufacturing, or that materials made this way have clinical approval. The cited paper and contemporaneous coverage do not establish those outcomes.
- It is not the same as every spinach-based photochemical process: a 2020 study used spinach extract in photocatalytic selective plating on polyimide substrates. It investigated chlorophylls and salts as separate extract components and identified ionic salts as the main component enhancing photoreduction rates. That distinct result does not establish chlorophyll as the active species in every spinach photochemistry application. See the 2020 plating study.
Why the finding matters
The work offers a proof of concept for using a plant-derived, light-responsive molecule to initiate controlled polymerization. Its interest lies in the combination of chlorophyll’s response to visible light with RAFT’s capacity to control polymer-chain growth—not in spinach serving as a ready-made, sustainable replacement for plastic feedstocks or manufacturing. Whether this approach can be scaled or deliver environmental advantages would require evidence beyond the reported laboratory demonstration.
