Melting ice does not turn water into metal. In a reported laboratory method, an ice cube acts as a controlled-release vehicle: a reagent trapped inside it is released gradually into a solution containing another reagent. The goal is to help produce isolated transition-metal atoms rather than clumps.
What role does the ice play?
The ice is a temporary container for a chemical reagent, not the source of the metal. As it melts, it releases the trapped reagent slowly into a separate solution. The gradual delivery is intended to control how the reagents meet and react. Chemistry World described this approach in a report by Katrina Krämer published on 10 February 2018 (Chemistry World).

Why aim for isolated metal atoms?
When reagents react quickly, they can form insoluble solids that precipitate and gather into irregular clumps. The method’s stated objective is to limit that clumping and obtain isolated transition-metal atoms. The Chemistry World report notes, as general context, that smaller metal catalyst particles can be more efficient; it does not establish that this particular method produces a better catalyst in every case.
Is silver nitrate and sodium chloride the reaction used?
The report uses silver nitrate reacting with sodium chloride as an example of a reaction that can produce insoluble material and precipitate. The available excerpt does not confirm that these are the reagents used to make the reported single-atom material, so the example should not be treated as the recipe.

What has—and has not—been established about the method?
The report supports the basic idea of slowly releasing a trapped reagent from melting ice into another reagent solution. The available information does not specify the metal identity, support material, exact reaction conditions, reproducibility, scale-up potential, or measured catalyst performance. It therefore explains a synthesis concept, not a complete laboratory procedure or proof of a general-purpose catalyst-making technique.
A separate patent listing describes a related freeze-and-melt approach involving a frozen metal-precursor solution treated with light or heat before melting. Its connection to the Chemistry World report is unverified, so it should be regarded only as an adjacent example, not evidence of the same experiment (Patsnap Eureka listing for CN106914237A).
