You can add a handwritten-looking signature with your laptop’s trackpad, but the steps depend on whether you’re signing a PDF or a Word document. On a Mac, Preview can capture a signature directly from the trackpad. For PDFs on other computers, Adobe Acrobat Reader offers draw, type, or image options. In Word, use inking if your version provides it, or insert a picture of your signature.
First, identify the document type
A PDF and a Word document use different signing tools. If your file ends in .pdf, use Preview on a Mac or Acrobat Reader on other systems. For a Word file, use an available drawing tool or add a signature image.

Sign a PDF on a Mac with the trackpad
- Open the PDF in Preview.
- If the Markup toolbar is hidden, show it, then select Sign.
- Choose Trackpad and follow the on-screen prompt.
- Write your signature on the trackpad with a finger. Press any key, then select Done. If the result is unsatisfactory, choose Clear and try again.
- Select the saved signature, drag it into place on the PDF, and resize it using the handles.
On a Force Touch trackpad, pressing more firmly can make the line heavier and darker. Preview also supports capturing a signature with the Mac’s built-in camera or a nearby iPhone or iPad; the phone and tablet option depends on Apple’s Continuity requirements. Sign a PDF on another laptop with Acrobat Reader
- Open the PDF in Acrobat Reader and select the Sign icon, or go to Tools > Fill & Sign.
- Choose the option to add a signature, then select Draw, Type, or Image.
- Apply the signature, place it in the document, and save the PDF.
Drawing with the trackpad gives you a handwritten look, while typing or inserting an image may be easier if drawing neatly is difficult. Adobe says a saved signature can be reused, and that the signature and added text become part of the saved PDF. This appearance workflow is not, by itself, a certificate-based digital signature; check the document’s certificate or signature panel if that distinction matters. Add a signature to a Word document
Draw with Word’s inking tools
If your version of Word has a Draw tab, use its inking tools to draw a signature with the trackpad or a mouse. Feature availability depends on the device and software version, and a touch-enabled device or stylus may be easier to control. Adobe’s guidance describes drawing in Word with a trackpad or mouse, but the steps may not apply to every Word build. See Adobe’s Word signing guide.
Insert a picture of your signature
For a neater result or when Word’s drawing tools are unavailable, sign on paper, photograph or scan the signature, then insert the image in Word. Crop and position it as needed. Microsoft documents inserting and saving a scanned handwritten signature image for reuse. Word also has a Signature Line command, which is a separate way to indicate where a document should be signed. Choose the approach that fits your file
- Mac PDF and trackpad: Use Preview’s Trackpad signature capture, then place and resize the saved signature.
- PDF on another system: Use Acrobat Reader’s Draw, Type, or Image option; a saved signature can be reused.
- Word file: Draw with inking if available, or insert a cropped signature image for more control over its appearance.
These steps explain how to place a signature’s appearance in a document. Whether that method meets a particular organization’s or transaction’s requirements depends on those requirements.
