To make downloads faster, first find out whether the bottleneck is your broadband service, Wi-Fi, router, device, or another user on the network. Run several speed tests, compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet when possible, then fix the weak link. If repeated wired tests are still below the speed expected for your plan, ask your internet provider to investigate.
Why download speed varies
A speed test is a snapshot, not a diagnosis. Results can change with the time of day, the test server, your device, Wi-Fi signal, and other activity on the network. The FCC’s 2024 Measuring Broadband America report discusses measurement limits and potential bottlenecks; Ofcom also notes that several factors can affect a connection’s performance.

Downloads may slow when other household members are streaming or downloading, when many devices are active, or when the device itself is busy. A Wi-Fi connection adds another possible bottleneck: walls, distance, and router placement can weaken the signal. Wi-Fi cannot deliver more than the broadband connection feeding the router.

- Note your expected service speed. Check your plan’s advertised or estimated download speed. Record the device and download source you are troubleshooting.
- Run several tests. Test at different times, preferably across more than one day. Close downloads and other bandwidth-heavy activity on the test device. For a cleaner comparison, pause other household activity where practical.
- Compare Ethernet with Wi-Fi. If your device supports it, connect it to the router by Ethernet and run a test. Then test over Wi-Fi near the router. Ethernet is a diagnostic comparison, not a way to make your provider deliver a faster tier.
- Compare results against the plan. If Ethernet is fast but Wi-Fi is slow, investigate the wireless network. If both are consistently slow, the issue may be the service, line, router, device, or another factor; contact your provider if the pattern persists.

If Wi-Fi is slower than Ethernet
- Move the router to a more open, central location and reduce the distance and barriers between it and the device.
- Check whether many devices are active or using bandwidth heavily, then retest when the network is quieter.
- Restart the router and any relevant mesh or fiber equipment. A reboot can resolve some problems, but it is not a guaranteed fix and cannot exceed your plan’s capacity. The FCC says, “Sometimes a simple router reboot—by powering it off and then back on again—can resolve a problem.” See its Home Network Tips for the Coronavirus Pandemic.
- Retest near the router and in the place where downloads are slow. If results differ substantially by location, coverage is likely part of the problem.
Ofcom’s UK-focused guide to improving your Wi-Fi experience offers additional placement and usage suggestions. Country-specific contract rights and remedies vary, so UK guidance should not be treated as a rule for every location.
If Ethernet and Wi-Fi are both slow
Repeat wired tests at different times with competing activity paused where practical. If they remain below the speed expected under your plan, contact your internet provider. Ask it to check for an outage or service disruption, a line fault, traffic management, and the speed expected for your current plan. Also ask whether your router and other supplied equipment support that plan.

Ofcom’s broadband and Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance is relevant to UK customers; any contract remedies it describes are specific to that context. Elsewhere, check the terms and service procedures that apply to your provider.

Consider a router replacement only when its capability or coverage is demonstrably limiting the connection. Before buying, confirm that it is compatible with your provider and subscribed service, and compare the coverage you need with the total cost, including any rental or equipment charges.

A faster broadband plan may help if repeated wired results show that the current service tier is the limit. It will not fix poor Wi-Fi coverage, and a better router cannot make a slow broadband service faster. Before changing plans or providers, check local availability, full pricing, and contract terms.
