Yes. Researchers have demonstrated several ways to dissolve particular noble metals without aqua regia, but none is a universal substitute. Results depend on the metal, the material being treated and the chemistry used; some alternatives are corrosive or produce hazardous fumes.
Why there is no single aqua-regia replacement
“Noble metals” covers elements that do not all respond alike. A method that dissolves gold may not work for rhodium, and a result on a pure metal sample does not predict recovery from electronic scrap, ore or a used catalyst. Dissolving a metal is also only one step in recovery: the dissolved material still has to be separated and recovered.

The studies below demonstrate different chemistries under particular laboratory conditions. Their results should be read as evidence for those metals and feedstocks—not as a ranking of ready-to-use processes for every recycling job.

| Approach | Demonstrated result | What the result does—and does not—show |
|---|---|---|
| Concentrated acidic aluminum salt hydrates | In a 2020 study, palladium, gold and platinum wires dissolved at different rates; rhodium wire did not. A separate test reported 95% palladium leaching from spent automotive catalyst in 15 minutes at 80 °C. | Wire and catalyst results use different feedstocks and are not directly comparable. The catalyst result does not establish the same performance for pure palladium or other scrap. |
| Gold leaching reagents, including iodine and bromine | A 2019 comparison on uniform 99.99% gold disks found iodine and bromine among the faster alternatives tested. | The ranking is for the study’s controlled pure-gold tests, not a universal ranking for ores, mixed scrap or plant-scale processes. |
| Organic-solvent chlorinating chemistry | A 2022 study reported near-quantitative dissolution of metallic gold, palladium and copper within minutes at room temperature under its studied conditions. | Platinum dissolved more slowly with the chlorinating oxidant alone; adding hydrogen peroxide inhibited its dissolution. The result describes a particular laboratory system. |
What did the concentrated salt-hydrate study find?
A 2020 paper, “Dissolution of noble metals in highly concentrated acidic salt solutions,” investigated hydrated aluminum chloride and aluminum nitrate solutions. ChemistryViews reported full dissolution of the tested palladium wires in 4.5 hours, gold wires in roughly one day and platinum wires in roughly two days; the rhodium wires did not dissolve. These are outcomes for the tested wire samples, not general processing times for those metals.

The same ChemistryViews account reported 95% palladium leaching from a spent automotive catalyst in 15 minutes at 80 °C. That is a notable result, but it concerns catalyst material rather than a palladium wire. Differences in substrate and test conditions mean the two time figures cannot be used as a direct comparison of metal dissolution rates.
Why this is not a casual or home method
ChemistryViews described the concentrated salt-hydrate system as highly corrosive and said it generates nitrosyl chloride, chlorine gas and other noxious fumes. “Without aqua regia” therefore does not mean harmless, low-risk or suitable for informal use. The reported experiments are laboratory research, not consumer instructions.

Which alternatives were faster for gold in a controlled comparison?
A 2019 Scientific Reports study compared reagents using uniform 99.99% gold disks. At 25 °C, its average dissolution-rate order was:

This is a study-specific comparison, not a general process ranking. The authors noted that results from experiments using different input materials and conditions are often not directly comparable. The study also reported rates up to approximately 1,000 mg·h⁻¹·cm⁻² for fast-dissolving halogen and aqua-regia cases in its tests; that upper figure should not be applied to every reagent or feedstock.
Why some reagents performed differently
- Thiosulfate: performance was hindered by formation of a sulfide passive layer on the gold surface.
- Thiourea: surface precipitation occurred during the trials, although dissolution continued.
- Methanesulfonic acid: it did not extract gold in those tests.
These observations help explain outcomes on the study’s gold disks; they do not establish how each reagent would behave with a different material or process design.

What does organic-solvent chemistry add?
A 2022 ChemSusChem study examined triphenylphosphine dichloride or oxalyl chloride with hydrogen peroxide in organic solvents. Under the studied conditions, it reported near-quantitative dissolution of metallic gold, palladium and copper within minutes at room temperature. Platinum behaved differently: it dissolved more slowly with the chlorinating oxidant alone, and adding hydrogen peroxide inhibited its dissolution.
The paper also described subsequent transfer and separation chemistry. That matters because a dissolution result alone does not show that a process has produced purified, recoverable metal. Reagent handling, selectivity and downstream separation remain part of the recovery problem.

- Dissolves Oxides and Impurities: When used in the melting process of metals such as gold and silver, borax effectively dissolves oxides and other impurities. This action results in the formation of a fluid borate slag which floats on top of the molten metal, allowing for easier separation and ensuring the purity of the final product
- Versatile Uses as a Flux: Borax serves multiple roles in metalworking. It can be used to glaze ceramic crucibles, enhancing their durability and performance. Additionally, it acts as a flux in casting and soldering processes, inhibiting the formation of oxides on metal surfaces, which is crucial for achieving strong and clean joints
- Accelerates Melting Speed: By adding an appropriate amount of borax, the melting process of metals can be expedited. This feature is particularly useful in industrial settings where efficiency and time management are critical factors
- Handling and Storage Guidelines: Borax must be kept in a dry place to maintain its effectiveness. Before use, a couple of drops of distilled water can be added to the borax in a crucible. Grinding the mixture into a milky paste consistency prepares it for immediate application. Keeping the metal deoxidized during melting and pouring ensures its cleanliness and integrity
- NOTE: This product is Professional use only and ideal for professionals and hobbyists involved in melting, casting, and jewelry making and non-precious metals, offering ease of use and superior results
Can these methods be called safer or greener?
Not on the evidence summarized here. The concentrated salt-hydrate mixture is explicitly reported to be highly corrosive and to produce noxious fumes. The gold-disk comparison measures dissolution performance, not overall safety or environmental impact. The organic-solvent study demonstrates a different route, but its reported dissolution results alone do not establish a safer process or a lower lifecycle impact.
A 2023 review in Angewandte Chemie International Edition surveys a broader set of selective noble-metal recycling approaches, including iodine/iodide, thiosulfate, thiourea, ammonia-based dissolution and organic-solvent systems. That range reflects a field of alternatives with different tradeoffs, not proof that one is universally preferable.
What should a recycling comparison account for?
A meaningful process comparison needs to match the target and material being treated. A pure-gold disk test, a metal wire and a spent catalyst are not interchangeable evidence. For a real recovery process, the relevant questions include:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Target metal: whether the goal is gold, palladium, platinum, rhodium or a mixture.
- Feedstock: whether the input is a pure sample, catalyst, ore or mixed electronic material.
- Selectivity: which other metals dissolve along with the target.
- Hazards and process burden: corrosivity, fumes and the controls needed to handle the chemistry.
- Downstream recovery: how dissolved metals are separated and recovered, beyond the initial dissolution step.
The available results establish laboratory demonstrations for specific conditions; they do not establish a universal winner or show that every route is commercially available or scaled for every feedstock.
