CS2 teams improve their Valve Regional Standings (VRS) position by earning results in tournaments whose outcomes count toward Valve’s ranking. The practical priorities are to verify that an event is VRS-ranked, compete for strong results, preserve roster continuity where possible, and plan around the VRS snapshot used on the event’s invitation date. Valve’s public rules do not provide a complete formula for converting a particular placement into a guaranteed points gain, so no result or lineup choice can be translated into a precise rank increase in advance.
What the VRS ranks—and why it matters
Valve describes the VRS as its official system for ranking roster performance. It publishes the standings monthly, and organizers use them as a basis for direct VRS invitations. That makes the ranking relevant not just as a measure of past performance, but as one factor in a team’s access to ranked events.

The ranked unit is a roster: five specific athletes, regardless of which team organization they are associated with. That distinction matters. A familiar organization name does not by itself establish that a lineup is the same ranked roster; the players are central to the ranking identity. Teams should therefore think about VRS planning in terms of the five-player roster and its eligibility, not only the club or brand name.
VRS is also not a promise of entry into every tournament. An event’s invitation rules and the standings snapshot it uses determine how the ranking applies in that event. A strong position can matter for direct invitations, while open qualifiers and other competition routes may offer opportunities to enter without relying solely on a direct invite.

Which tournaments count toward VRS?
Valve distinguishes ranked tournaments from unranked ones. A ranked tournament is one whose outcomes generate data used by VRS to determine relative roster performance. An unranked tournament does not generate that data. So the first question before committing practice time, travel, or a roster to an event is not just whether the event is competitive: it is whether it is officially ranked under Valve’s Tournament Operating Requirements.
FACEIT’s support guidance, updated May 27, 2026, describes VRS-ranked events as tournaments that follow those requirements and award points toward the standings. It also describes ESEA League’s competitive divisions as a route associated with HLTV.org coverage and a path toward ESL Pro League. That is platform guidance about a pathway, not a guarantee that a specific roster will earn points, receive coverage, or progress to a particular league stage.
Check an event before entering
- Confirm ranked status. Check the event’s published information against Valve’s current Tournament Operating Requirements. Do not infer VRS status from the event’s size, prize pool, organizer reputation, or the quality of its field.
- Read the invitation criteria. Identify whether the event uses direct VRS invitations, an open qualifier, or both. If it uses VRS, determine which standings list applies and what date the organizer uses for its snapshot.
- Check roster conditions. Confirm that the lineup can meet the applicable continuity requirement and any regional eligibility rules before planning around a direct invite.
- Assess the practical commitment. Compare the event’s schedule, travel, and competitive level with the roster’s ability to prepare and participate. These are important planning factors, but they are not VRS scoring inputs established by the rules.
If an event is unranked, its result will not feed into VRS under Valve’s definition. It may still have competitive or developmental value, but a team should not count on it to improve the official standings.

How results can improve a team’s position
Results in ranked tournaments are the evidenced input to VRS. Pursuing better finishes in those events is therefore the direct competitive objective for a team seeking a stronger position. The public rules reviewed here, however, do not disclose a complete scoring formula or a guaranteed conversion from a placement to points. A team cannot reliably say that a particular finish will add a fixed number of points or move it a specified number of places.
That uncertainty affects event selection. It is sensible to seek ranked competition where the roster can perform credibly, but it is not possible from the public rules to calculate a universally optimal event schedule or to promise that entering more events will produce a higher rank. Teams should distinguish what is known—ranked-event outcomes generate VRS data—from what is not established publicly: the exact numerical effect of a particular result.
Use a realistic event-selection test
- VRS relevance: Is the tournament ranked under Valve’s current requirements?
- Snapshot relevance: Which VRS release will the organizer use on the invitation date?
- Entry route: Is there an open qualifier, a direct invite, or both?
- Roster readiness: Can the same core players meet participation requirements, and is the lineup eligible for the relevant regional list?
- Competitive practicality: Can the team manage the travel, timing, and preparation required? These considerations affect the team’s plan, not the published VRS formula.
This test helps avoid two common mistakes: spending resources on an event whose result does not count toward VRS, and making a plan around a ranking or invite condition the roster cannot satisfy.

Why roster continuity matters
Because VRS ranks five specific athletes, changing players can affect which roster the ranking applies to and whether a team meets an event’s invite conditions. For a direct VRS invitation, Valve’s requirements specify a continuity condition: at least three participating athletes must have been on the invited roster on the invitation date, and those athletes must play in each event match. A team considering a substitution should check the current event requirements carefully rather than assume that its organization’s existing standing automatically carries over to any lineup.
Recommended Free Tools
This is a reason to protect a stable core where practical, not a rule that teams must never make changes. A lineup may have legitimate reasons to change, and continuity does not guarantee a higher rank. The useful decision is to weigh a roster change against its possible effect on roster identity and direct-invite eligibility, then verify the applicable criteria before relying on an invitation.
Before changing a player
- Identify the five athletes associated with the roster on the relevant VRS list and the invitation date.
- Check whether at least three athletes who meet the continuity condition can participate and play in every event match.
- Review the organizer’s current invite rules for any additional roster or participation conditions.
- If the lineup cannot meet the requirements, plan for another entry route, such as an open qualifier where available, rather than assuming direct-invite eligibility.
Plan around the invitation-date snapshot
Valve publishes VRS monthly, and ranked-event organizers must use the most recent VRS as of the event’s invitation date. The relevant ranking is therefore not necessarily a live third-party table viewed by a team on the day it checks. What matters for a specific event is the official snapshot applicable on the organizer’s invite date.

Teams should monitor the event’s actual invitation timeline as well as Valve’s monthly release. A ranking can change between the moment a team reviews it and the moment organizers issue invitations. Conversely, a later standings update does not necessarily replace the snapshot already used for an invitation. The organizer’s stated criteria and date are essential to interpreting whether the team’s position is relevant.
Keep a simple invite calendar
- Record the event’s expected invitation date and the source of its invite criteria.
- Note the latest monthly VRS release and the standings list the event uses.
- Track roster changes against the invite date, not only against the event’s match dates.
- Recheck official event information if the invitation schedule or requirements change.
This is especially useful when a team is close to an invite cutoff or has recently altered its lineup. The calendar does not predict a points gain; it helps the team apply the right standings snapshot and eligibility rules to its decision.
Understand regional VRS eligibility for Majors
Valve’s Major rulebook uses regional standings lists for invitations: Europe, Americas, and Asia. A roster’s regional assignment is based on the majority of its players. There is also a recent-region eligibility condition: a roster is eligible for a regional assignment only if it did not appear in another region’s VRS list during the preceding three calendar months.
Best Value
These rules mean that regional placement is not simply a matter of choosing the list that seems most favorable. A team must account for where the roster has appeared recently and how the majority of its players determines its assignment. Before relying on a regional Major list, check the current rulebook and the roster’s actual listing history for the relevant three-calendar-month window.
Regional check for a Major plan
- Determine which regional list the Major invitation process uses: Europe, Americas, or Asia.
- Apply the majority-of-players rule to the current five-player roster.
- Check whether that roster appeared on another region’s VRS list during the preceding three calendar months.
- Confirm the current Major rulebook and event criteria before treating a regional position as valid for invitation purposes.
Can an open qualifier help a team move up?
Valve’s tournament requirements allow open qualifiers within ranked-event structures. An open qualifier can give a roster a way to compete for entry where it does not have a direct invitation, and that can create an opportunity to play in a ranked competition. But open entry is not a shortcut to VRS movement: the qualifier’s structure and ranked status matter, and there is no guarantee of a particular points result or progression.
FACEIT’s support page also identifies ESEA League competitive divisions as a pathway associated with HLTV.org coverage and a route toward ESL Pro League. Teams interested in that route should treat it as a competition pathway described by the platform, not as automatic VRS credit or guaranteed advancement. Check the current league and event details to understand how the particular competition fits the team’s goals.

Teams can verify whether an event is ranked, identify the relevant published standings, review the invitation snapshot date, and assess whether a roster meets stated continuity and regional requirements. They can also choose to prioritize results in ranked events and pursue open competition where appropriate.
What they cannot establish from the public rules described here is a guaranteed points amount for a specific finish, a certain number of places gained, or an exact ranking benefit from keeping or changing one player. A claim such as “this placement is worth a fixed number of VRS points” needs a complete, current scoring basis; the rules summarized here do not supply one. Treat third-party rankings as useful context only where relevant, and use Valve’s published standings and the event organizer’s stated snapshot for official invitation decisions.
A practical VRS plan for a CS2 roster
- Set the objective. Decide whether the immediate goal is a better VRS position, Major eligibility, a direct invitation, or competitive development. These goals overlap but are not interchangeable.
- Build an event shortlist. Keep only events whose status and entry structure can be verified. Separate ranked events from unranked events in the team calendar.
- Map the invite dates. For each ranked event, record the standings snapshot used and the applicable regional list, if any.
- Test the lineup. Before confirming a roster, check the five-player identity, direct-invite continuity condition, and any regional eligibility requirements.
- Choose a feasible route. Compare direct-invite prospects with available open qualifiers or league pathways. Account for timing, travel, and readiness as practical constraints rather than assumed scoring factors.
- Review after each event. Confirm the event’s final status and track the next official monthly VRS release. Use actual standings updates, not a promised point estimate, to update the plan.
Valve’s rules and event procedures can change. For a consequential entry or roster decision, check the current Tournament Operating Requirements, the latest VRS release, and the target event’s own invitation criteria.
