In a 2026 article, Anubhab Banerjee reported that this approach cut simulated data rate by 94.5% versus full-state streaming at the loosest tested tolerance. The experiment used a CartPole simulator—not a physical drone—so the result is a demonstration of the method, not a measured drone-network saving.
Why send corrections instead of every update?
In a conventional telemetry stream, a remote device repeatedly sends its measured state to a cloud service. That keeps the cloud current, but it can spend bandwidth transmitting information the cloud could have predicted from the previous state and known inputs.

Shadow tracking replaces constant state updates with two matching model copies:
- The cloud advances its estimate of the system using its copy of the world model and known inputs.
- The remote device runs a shadow copy of the cloud’s estimate and compares it with its local observation.
- When the difference exceeds configured limits, the device sends a correction. Both copies apply it and continue from the aligned state.
The cloud is therefore not literally reading a drone’s thoughts. It is predicting the system’s state and receiving occasional updates when its prediction is no longer close enough.

What did the experiment actually test?
Banerjee’s October 2026 article describes a modified CartPole simulator in which a cart follows a route under random wind. The simulated state contains the cart’s position and the pole’s angle. The article explicitly says no drone was built or measured, and the available account does not independently verify the implementation’s code repository.
The described model uses a recurrent network with a 64-number memory and learns a correction to a straight-line prediction. It is trained to imagine several steps ahead by feeding its own predictions back into later steps. The implementation also sends the control action as one bit per step, in addition to state corrections.

How much data did the reported tests use?
The article reports 100 test games per configuration, each lasting up to 10 seconds. Test routes and wind patterns were not encountered during training. The table gives the article author’s reported rates in bits per second for full-state streaming and three prediction approaches at three position-and-angle error tolerances.

Why does the headline say 94%?
The largest reported reduction is 94.5% at the loose tolerance, calculated against full-state streaming: 176 bits/s for the world model versus 3,200 bits/s for full streaming. At the medium tolerance, the reported reduction is 93% (237 versus 3,200 bits/s); at the tight tolerance, it is 87% (409 versus 3,200 bits/s). These are author-reported results from the simulated test configurations.
The choice of baseline changes the story. Compared with the better of the two simple estimates—freeze or straight-line—the world model’s reported savings are 69% at the tight tolerance, 53% at medium, and 26.5% at loose. In other words, most of the headline saving is measured against transmitting every state, and the world model’s edge over a simple predictor narrows as the permitted error grows.

What makes the cloud’s estimate drift?
Prediction is not perfect: when the system behaves differently from the model’s expectation, the cloud’s estimate diverges from the remote observation. The correction threshold determines how much divergence is accepted before the device sends an update. Tighter limits keep estimates closer but can trigger more corrections; looser limits tolerate greater error in exchange for fewer transmissions.
In the reported tight-limit tests, the correction rate rose from 4.1 per second in still air to 6.7 per second at the strongest tested wind. That strongest wind was also the maximum wind used during training, so the result does not establish how the system behaves beyond that range.

The built-in battery does not need to be replaced and can be charged directly by plugging it into the Type-C charging cable included in the package.
What would have to change before using this with a real drone?
The simulation’s results depend on assumptions that a deployed system would need to address. The article assumes a perfect network model with no message delay or loss. If a correction is lost, the cloud and device can become desynchronized; acknowledgements and periodic resets could help recover alignment but would add traffic. Separate devices may also produce slightly different arithmetic results, eventually causing their model copies to diverge.
- Count packet overhead. The article’s one-bit-per-step action stream could be inefficient if every bit is sent in its own packet. The reported data rates should not be treated as end-to-end network usage without accounting for how messages are packaged.
- Handle loss and delay. A real deployment needs a way to detect missing or late corrections and restore synchronized state.
- Test beyond the simulator. A two-state CartPole model is much simpler than a drone’s real motion and operating conditions. The reported results do not establish performance on aircraft.
- Match the model to the system. The article recommends using known physics equations when they adequately describe the system; learned world models are more relevant when dynamics are complex or partly unknown.
What the 94.5% result does—and does not—show
The result shows that, in the author’s simulated CartPole setup and at the loosest tested error limit, a learned world model used fewer reported bits per second than full-state streaming. It does not show that a physical drone used 94.5% less data, that the saving would persist with packet overhead or network failures, or that the learned model would outperform simpler estimates in every deployment. For a drone application, the useful takeaway is the design pattern—predict locally and remotely, then transmit corrections—while the actual bandwidth and accuracy trade-off would need validation in the target system.
