How Cable Routing and Compute Trays Affect Data Center Rack Maintenance

Cable trays can support and organize rack cabling, but serviceability depends on keeping airflow and component access clear—and choosing a tray that fits the rack.

“Cable-free compute trays” is not an established product category, and trays do not make a rack free of power or network cabling. The practical maintenance benefit comes from organizing and supporting cables so they are less likely to obstruct airflow, component removal, or access to service points. A tray can help—but its position and removability matter as much as its cable capacity.

How cable routing affects rack maintenance

Cables routed across an airflow path or in front of a component can complicate cooling and make that component harder to extract. NVIDIA’s DGX SuperPOD cabling guide recommends routing cables so they do not block airflow or transceiver and system-unit extraction, supporting cable weight, and using trays where possible. These are design recommendations, not a measured estimate of maintenance time saved.

The guide also cautions that routing cables through pipes and holes may affect serviceability and constrain future cable runs. A neat-looking bundle is not necessarily a serviceable one if technicians must move it to reach equipment or add cabling later.

What a cable-management tray does—and does not do

A cable-management tray provides a route and support for selected cable groups. It can help keep cabling organized and away from components, but it does not eliminate the rack’s cabling or guarantee unobstructed access. The outcome depends on where the tray is mounted, which cables it carries, and whether it blocks a service point.

Trays can be part of the service procedure

Cisco’s UCS X9508 chassis installation guide describes cable-management trays for the chassis’s IFM cables and a procedure for removing a tray to access an IFM. This is a chassis-specific example: a tray may organize cables while still needing to be moved or removed during service. It does not show that all trays impede access.

Choose a tray around the rack and service path

Products described by manufacturers illustrate different approaches, not a universal “cable-free compute tray.” Legrand lists cabinet cable-management accessories such as trays, rings, and guides. Eaton’s SRCABLETRAY is a roof-mounted cable trough intended for compatible SmartRack enclosures; Eaton says it routes cables over the rack and helps reduce cable stress. Its SRCABLETRAYEXP expansion plates add another routing level and can separate power, data, and fiber paths when used with the base trough.

Before selecting an accessory, check the rack’s dimensions and mounting compatibility, the cable types and separation needs, how cables will be supported, and whether the installation obstructs equipment extraction or service access. For Eaton’s expansion plates, confirm that the base trough is part of the intended configuration. Product descriptions do not establish comparable capacity, pricing, or maintenance-time savings.

Serviceability is broader than cable management

Cable routing is one part of a serviceable rack. Vertiv describes its Open Rack for OCP as modular, with tool-less access and front-serviceable components. That is an example of a broader design approach; it is not evidence that a cable tray alone reduces service time. When planning a rack, consider cable paths alongside component access and the actual service procedures for the installed equipment.
