How browser-based peer-to-peer file transfer works
WebRTC separates connection setup from the transfer itself. The browser application first arranges for the two peers to exchange session descriptions and ICE candidates. After a connection succeeds, the peers can send file chunks over a WebRTC data channel. In this design, the Durable Object handles signaling; it does not need to carry the file payload once the peer data channel is established.

- Create or join a room. The web client obtains an unpredictable transfer-room identifier and opens a WebSocket to the application’s Worker endpoint.
- Route both peers to one coordinator. The Worker routes the room identifier to a named Durable Object. The object accepts each peer’s server-side WebSocket and associates it with the room and participant identity.
- Exchange connection details. The peers send WebRTC offers, answers, and ICE candidates through the object, which forwards appropriate messages to the other participant.
- Transfer over the data channel. Once ICE connectivity succeeds, the peers exchange file chunks directly over the WebRTC data channel. The app should define how it reports progress, handles backpressure, signals completion or cancellation, and checks file integrity.
- End or expire the room. Close the signaling room after the transfer or expire it under an application-defined policy. Do not rely on an in-memory room map as durable state.
WebRTC does not prescribe a signaling protocol. MDN Web Docs explains that applications choose how peers exchange setup information; WebSocket is one option, alongside other transports. A Durable Object provides a named, stateful coordination point that can serve multiple clients in a room. MDN’s WebRTC signaling guide and Cloudflare’s Durable Objects overview describe these respective roles.
Why use a Durable Object for signaling?
Peers need a rendezvous point where their setup messages can meet. A Worker can route requests for a particular room to the same named Durable Object, allowing that object to coordinate the room’s WebSocket connections. Separate room identifiers can map to separate objects, keeping unrelated transfers from sharing one application-level coordinator.

WebSocket suits interactive, two-way signaling because either peer can send a message and receive forwarded messages over an open connection. It is not required by WebRTC: the application chooses the signaling transport. When choosing between WebSocket and another option, consider connection overhead and latency, server push, reconnection behavior, room routing, operational complexity, and support for trickled ICE candidates. What the signaling service must validate
Routing a message to the right room does not, by itself, prove that the sender is entitled to join or forward it. Treat room membership and message forwarding as application security responsibilities. Before relaying signaling data, validate the message type, room membership, size, rate, and sender and recipient. Consider room-ID entropy, abuse prevention, cleanup, reconnect races, duplicate messages, and authorization as part of the product design.

The signaling service coordinates a connection; it does not guarantee that a direct peer route will be available. ICE attempts to find a viable path, and some network conditions may require a TURN relay. A TURN option can improve reachability, but relaying file data changes the bandwidth and operational picture. The design described here does not establish the availability, terms, or suitability of any particular TURN provider.

Cloudflare recommends considering the WebSocket Hibernation API for server-accepted WebSockets. Eligible Durable Objects can leave memory while accepted WebSocket clients remain connected; an incoming event wakes the object. Because hibernation resets in-memory state, the object must reconstruct what it needs from durable storage and/or serialized per-connection WebSocket attachments. Cloudflare documents a maximum serialized attachment size of 16,384 bytes, so attachments are for small connection metadata, not file contents or large transfer state. Hibernation is conditional, not a promise that an object will sleep on a fixed schedule. Cloudflare says eligible objects hibernate after 10 seconds without an incoming request or event, with the runtime determining the transition. Hibernation eligibility excludes cases such as reliance on scheduled setTimeout or setInterval callbacks, unfinished I/O, a standard WebSocket API connection, or an event still being processed. Keep timers and unsaved room state out of the critical path if reducing idle in-memory duration matters. Cloudflare documents the conditions in its Durable Object lifecycle guide.
Plan for disconnects, shutdowns, and incomplete transfers
Hibernation keeps eligible accepted WebSockets connected, but it is different from shutdown. A deployment, runtime decision, or other shutdown can terminate a connection. Clients should reconnect with bounded backoff, rejoin the room, and repeat negotiation when necessary. The application must define what happens to room membership and authorization after reconnect, and whether a transfer restarts or can resume. A partially transferred file does not resume automatically just because the signaling client reconnects.

What the documented connection ceiling means
Cloudflare documents a maximum of 32,768 WebSocket connections per Durable Object when using the Hibernation API, while warning that CPU and memory can constrain practical concurrency below that ceiling. This is a documented upper bound, not a recommended room size or capacity guarantee. Design object identity around the coordination unit—usually one bounded transfer room—rather than funneling unrelated application traffic through one singleton, and test the expected signaling bursts. The limit and qualification appear in Cloudflare’s Durable Object state API documentation.

What this architecture does—and does not—promise
- It can avoid installing a separate client app. Users open the web app in a compatible browser, but the service still depends on a Worker, signaling coordination, and network connectivity.
- It separates signaling from file transport. The Durable Object relays setup messages; the peer data channel carries file chunks after the connection is established.
- It does not guarantee direct connectivity. Some network paths may need TURN relaying, and the signaling server cannot make every peer pair connect directly.
- It does not define a file-transfer protocol. Chunk sizing, progress, backpressure, integrity checks, cancellation, and restart or resume behavior must be designed by the application.
- It does not make transient room state durable. Hibernation clears memory, and shutdown can drop WebSockets; reconstruct room state and handle reconnection explicitly.
