Yes—receipt OCR can run in a browser without sending the receipt image to a remote OCR service. Tesseract.js, for example, supports browser use through WebAssembly and accepts image files as browser File or Blob inputs. But “OCR runs in the browser” does not by itself prove that an image never leaves the device: a web page or its worker can still make network requests. That stronger privacy claim depends on the exact app and deployed build.
What browser-based receipt OCR does
A browser OCR app can take an image selected, pasted, or dropped into a page and pass it to an OCR engine running locally in the browser. Tesseract.js describes itself as bringing the Tesseract OCR engine to browsers and Node.js by wrapping a WebAssembly port. Its API can accept a browser File or Blob, so the image does not have to be uploaded to an OCR server for recognition.

This is a statement about where recognition can happen, not a blanket guarantee about all data handling by a particular website. A local OCR engine can avoid transmitting the receipt image to a remote OCR service, while the surrounding page may still send other requests.

Which receipt image formats are supported?
Tesseract.js documents image inputs including BMP, JPEG, PNG, PBM, WebP, and non-animated GIF. Its documentation says PDF files are not supported. If your receipt is a PDF, you would need a separate PDF-capable tool or a conversion step before using this image-input workflow; no particular PDF workflow is established here.

Format support is only one part of choosing an OCR approach. The project says it does not modify Tesseract’s recognition model to improve accuracy, and the available sources do not establish receipt-specific accuracy or speed results. Test representative receipts—including faded thermal print, small type, skewed photos, and varied lighting—before relying on extracted text for bookkeeping or reimbursement.
How to tell whether the image really stays on your device
A page can access a user-selected file through browser file APIs, but that access alone does not prevent transmission. Likewise, putting OCR work in a Web Worker can keep processing away from the main UI thread, but MDN documents that workers can make network requests using APIs such as fetch() and XMLHttpRequest. A worker is not a privacy boundary.

To substantiate a “never leaves this device” claim for a specific app, examine the complete application and its dependencies and verify network behavior for the exact deployed build. Check whether image data, derived text, or other identifying details are sent by the page, workers, analytics code, error reporting, or third-party scripts. This verification must apply to the version users actually load; a local OCR library alone cannot establish it.

OOCR’s privacy page, last updated June 28, 2026, says, “Your images never leave your device” and “There is no upload path.” It describes its own PP-OCRv6 WebAssembly service and is a vendor statement about that implementation, not independent verification and not evidence about other browser OCR apps.
