How Brain-to-Text Systems Turn Neural Signals Into Written Words

Brain-to-text systems decode neural activity associated with attempted or imagined speech. Learn how recording, signal processing, and trained models produce text—and why that is not unrestricted mind-reading.

Brain-to-text systems measure neural activity associated with a person’s attempted or imagined speech, translate that activity into features a computer can analyze, and use a trained decoder to predict words. The predicted text can appear on a screen or be read aloud. This is not the same as unrestricted mind-reading: most fast communication demonstrations decode a defined speech task, while experimental fMRI work reconstructs meaning under different conditions.

How does a brain-to-text system work?

A speech neuroprosthesis is a chain of measurement and prediction. The brain does not send a ready-made sentence to a computer; researchers record activity associated with speech, process the signal, and train a model to map patterns in that signal to language.

  1. Record neural activity. Implanted research systems have used microelectrode arrays within the brain or electrocorticography (ECoG) arrays placed over the cortical surface. A separate line of work uses non-invasive functional MRI (fMRI) to study semantic reconstruction.
  2. Extract useful features. The recording is a changing time series, not text. Processing identifies signal patterns that vary with speech-related activity. One ECoG report analyzed high-gamma activity in the 70–150 Hz band and lower-frequency signals in the 0.3–17 Hz range.
  3. Decode language. A model trained on neural patterns and language data estimates speech units, words, or word sequences. The representation and decoder differ by study; there is no single universal brain-to-text algorithm.
  4. Show or speak the result. A system can display predicted words as text. Text-to-speech can then read that text aloud, and some research systems have also synthesized a voice directly from neural activity.

What kind of speech is being decoded?

The task matters: attempted speech, silent imagined words, and semantic reconstruction are not interchangeable. A decoder’s output should be understood in light of what the participant was asked to do.

Attempted speech

In many fast implanted communication demonstrations, a participant tries to speak but paralysis or dysarthria prevents intelligible speech. The system decodes neural activity associated with that attempted movement and speech production. This is communication through a speech-related signal, not access to every thought the participant has.

Inner or imagined speech

Inner-speech studies ask participants to silently imagine words. A 2025 study examined real-time decoding of inner speech and strategies intended to block unintended decoding of private inner speech without sacrificing accuracy. That is a specific experimental finding, not evidence that a system can translate arbitrary thoughts into sentences.

Semantic reconstruction with fMRI

A 2023 fMRI study reconstructed aspects of meaning from brain responses while participants heard speech, imagined speech, or watched silent videos. The method is distinct from fast implanted speech interfaces: it uses a scanner-based experimental setup, and the study found that participant cooperation was necessary during both training and application.

How fast and accurate are reported systems?

Published speed and error figures depend on the participant, recording method, vocabulary, task, and evaluation method. The two 2023 results below came from separate studies and participants, so they are not a controlled head-to-head comparison.

Study and recording approach Reported result How to interpret it
Francis R. Willett and colleagues, Nature (2023); intracortical electrodes 62 words per minute; 9.1% word error rate with a 50-word vocabulary, and 23.8% with a 125,000-word vocabulary. These are results for one participant under defined experimental conditions, not a general product specification. The authors said the large-vocabulary error rate was probably not yet low enough for everyday use.
Edward F. Chang and colleagues, Nature (2023); ECoG Median 78 words per minute and median 25% word error rate with a 1,024-word vocabulary. This was a separate participant and system, not a controlled comparison with the intracortical study.

Word error rate describes transcription errors relative to the words a participant intended; a lower percentage means fewer errors. In the intracortical study, the authors contrasted the 24% large-vocabulary result with a 4–5% error rate for state-of-the-art speech-to-text systems, while cautioning that the neuroprosthesis result was probably not yet sufficient for everyday use. That comparison is useful context, not evidence that the two systems were evaluated in identical conditions.

Does brain-to-text mean a device can read private thoughts?

No. “Mind-reading” is misleading if it suggests unrestricted access to a person’s mental content. Fast speech neuroprosthesis results concern neural activity during a defined attempted-speech task; inner-speech research concerns words participants deliberately imagine. Neither establishes a general-purpose thought reader.

The distinction is also important for privacy. The 2025 inner-speech study’s work on blocking unintended decoding addresses a real concern in this research area, but the finding should be described as a study-specific strategy rather than a universal safeguard. The fMRI semantic study likewise reported that participants had to cooperate during training and use.

What does longer-term use look like?

A 2026 Nature Medicine report described one participant using an intracortical system over an extended period for speech and cursor control. The reported use included sentence correction and optional synthesized speech. This adds evidence about duration and interaction beyond a short decoding demonstration, but a single research participant does not establish broad clinical deployment or expected performance for other users.

How should you judge a brain-to-text result?

A headline speed alone cannot show whether a system is useful for a particular person or task. To interpret a result, check the details that shape both its performance and its practical significance:

  • Recording method: intracortical electrodes, ECoG, and fMRI measure activity differently; they also have different practical contexts.
  • Task: determine whether the participant attempted speech, imagined words, or took part in semantic reconstruction.
  • Vocabulary and errors: a smaller word set can produce a different error rate than a large vocabulary. Read the vocabulary size alongside the speed and error figure.
  • Participants and evaluation: note how many people took part, their circumstances, and how the reported performance was measured.
  • Use over time: distinguish a brief experiment from extended use, and check whether the participant needed calibration or continued effort.
  • Output: a system may produce on-screen text, text-to-speech, synthesized voice, cursor control, or another interface. These are different capabilities.

Can someone buy a system that does this today?

The evidence described here concerns experimental clinical implants, research-grade recordings, and decoding pipelines. It does not establish a consumer product that readers can buy to reproduce these results, routine clinical availability, or current regulatory clearance. A generic headset or computer is not equivalent to the implanted recording and trained decoding systems used in the cited speech demonstrations.
