Brain-reading AI does not reveal an arbitrary private thought from a scan. In research demonstrations, it learns from brain responses recorded during controlled tasks, then uses those responses to estimate features of the known stimuli. A captioning model or image generator turns those estimates into words or a picture. The result is an inference shaped by both the measured signal and the AI model—not a direct, pixel-perfect readout of thought.
What “brain-reading” means in these experiments
The phrase sounds like an AI can inspect a brain scan and discover whatever its owner is thinking. The methods discussed here are narrower. Researchers collect fMRI data while a participant performs a defined task, such as looking at images, and pair each measured response with the stimulus presented. A model is trained on those paired examples to estimate aspects of the stimulus from later brain responses.

That experimental setup matters. The system is not decoding an unprompted stream of thoughts. It has a task, training data and a learned relationship between brain activity and visual or semantic features. Its output is best understood as a reconstruction or description consistent with the evidence—not as a transcript of someone’s mind.

How a brain response becomes an image or caption
1. Collect responses paired with known stimuli
Participants view images while an fMRI scanner records brain responses. Researchers know which image was on screen and associate it with the measured data. Across many examples, the resulting pairs give a model training material: brain-response patterns on one side, known images or features of those images on the other.
Some research also studies responses to descriptions or imagery tasks. Those are distinct conditions, not interchangeable ways of collecting the same signal. The task used to gather the data affects what a system can reasonably be asked to reconstruct.
2. Learn a mapping from brain activity to features
A model is trained to connect response patterns to representations created by pretrained visual or multimodal AI models. Rather than asking the brain data to specify every pixel directly, the approach can estimate features that capture things such as the image’s content or structure. Ferrante and colleagues report using regularized linear regression between brain activity and extracted model features; other methods use neural networks and can separate semantic information from fine visual detail.
This intermediate representation is important because an image has many properties at once. A decoder may estimate that a scene contains particular kinds of objects or has a certain overall arrangement more successfully than it can recover exact edges, colors or small details. The mapping is learned from examples; it is not a universal codebook that works identically for every person, task or scanner.

3. Pass the estimated features to an output model
To produce text, decoded features can be supplied to a captioning model, such as GIT in the method described by Ferrante et al. To produce an image, decoded semantic or visual features can guide a pretrained image generator. Ferrante et al. describe adding depth-map guidance to a latent-diffusion pipeline.
The generator contributes its own learned visual priors: patterns and details it has learned from training data. That can make an output coherent and recognizable even when the fMRI signal does not uniquely establish every detail. It also means that a plausible image is not, by itself, proof that the system recovered the original pixels.
What the output can—and cannot—tell you
Scene meaning is different from exact visual recovery
There are several different questions hidden inside the word “accurate.” A caption might identify the central objects or general scene correctly while omitting color and layout. An image might preserve a broad semantic idea but differ in fine details. A system may also produce something visually convincing because the generator fills gaps, not because the scan contained enough information to specify that exact result.
The 2024 Cortex2Image paper explicitly distinguishes semantic-feature decoding from estimating fine detail. This is a useful way to read reconstruction claims: ask whether the result gets the scene gist, the objects, the spatial arrangement, or the low-level appearance right. Those are separate accomplishments. A good result on one does not establish all the others.

Captions and pictures fail in different ways
Text and images can be generated from related decoded semantic information, but they use different output models. A captioning system compresses its estimate into a short verbal account; it may leave out visual properties that matter to a viewer. An image generator must render a scene and can add concrete colors, shapes or objects that are not securely supported by the signal. Neither output should be treated as a literal report of what the participant saw.
For a reader evaluating a demonstration, the relevant checks are therefore specific: does the caption name the right objects; does the generated image preserve the broad composition; are colors and positions recovered; and are small details independently supported by the measured data? The more a claim depends on tiny visual details, the less a merely plausible generated picture can establish.
What the published examples establish
Ferrante et al.: images and text from NSD data
Ferrante and colleagues’ 2024 paper, “Multimodal decoding of human brain activity into images and text,” reports using Natural Scenes Dataset data from eight subjects viewing COCO images. Their approach maps brain activity to features extracted from pretrained models, then uses an image-generation pipeline or a captioning model to create an output. The reported setup illustrates why “brain-reading” is shorthand: known stimuli, participant data, learned feature mappings and pretrained generators all contribute to the result.
SemReps-8K: a broader set of vision and language conditions
A 2026 eLife paper, “Modality-agnostic decoding of vision and language from fMRI,” describes SemReps-8K, a dataset involving six subjects and more than 8,000 stimuli per subject. The stimuli cover separate conditions involving image presentation, descriptive-caption presentation and imagery. That breadth can support study of how vision and language relate in fMRI decoding, but it does not make those conditions equivalent. Responses to a presented image, a caption and an imagery task reflect different experimental conditions.

The SemReps-8K account also cautions against straightforward comparison with some Natural Scenes Dataset results because the data were acquired at 3T, while NSD uses 7T fMRI. Scanner strength is one among several differences—alongside participants, tasks, datasets, output types and evaluation measures—that can affect results. The existence of a larger or broader dataset does not, by itself, establish that one decoder is more accurate than another.
Why there is no single accuracy number
The studies discussed here do not establish a general-purpose accuracy statistic that can be applied across fMRI image and description reconstruction. A score only has meaning in relation to its dataset, task, participants, scanner, output and evaluation metric. Unless two studies share those conditions and a comparable evaluation method, putting their headline scores side by side can mislead rather than clarify.
When a paper reports a result, read the scope attached to it. Ask what the participants did, what data trained the decoder, whether the output was a caption or picture, and how the researchers judged success. A result on controlled visual perception should not be silently widened into a claim about unrestricted thoughts or imagery.

Why fMRI is not a live thought-to-picture feed
fMRI’s response is relatively slow, which limits how well it can track rapidly changing visual experience. Benchetrit, Banville and King’s ICLR 2024 paper gives an approximately 0.5 Hz temporal resolution for fMRI and approximately 5,000 Hz for MEG in its modality comparison. These are the paper’s comparison figures, not universal specifications for every scanner or measurement setup.
Best Value
The ICLR work uses MEG for faster temporal tracking and applies a similar approach to 7T fMRI for comparison. The authors report that MEG loses low-level detail relative to 7T fMRI and describe their findings as preliminary. The comparison illustrates a trade-off: faster temporal sampling does not automatically provide the same spatial or visual-detail information. It is not evidence that fMRI reconstruction demonstrations are live mind-reading.
The authors also note that non-invasive decoding of imagination is substantially weaker than decoding perception, and that disruptive tasks reduce performance. Seeing an image under experimental conditions and imagining a scene are therefore not equivalent tests. A system that reconstructs aspects of presented images does not thereby demonstrate comparable access to private mental imagery.
What affects a reconstruction, and how to interpret one
- The task: Looking at a presented image, reading a description and imagining a scene are different conditions. A result should be interpreted in light of the task that generated the data.
- The participant and training examples: The decoder learns from paired responses and stimuli. Findings from a particular set of subjects and examples do not automatically show that the same mapping works for another person.
- The measured signal: fMRI is indirect, noisy and relatively slow. Complex natural images are difficult to reconstruct from it, especially when success is judged by exact visual details.
- The model’s learned prior: Pretrained feature extractors, captioners and image generators shape what can be represented and rendered. A generator can make a scene coherent while supplying details that are not uniquely specified by the scan.
- The evaluation: Semantic similarity, caption usefulness and low-level visual fidelity are different outcomes. A claim should name which one is being assessed rather than treating “accuracy” as a single property.
These limits do not make the research meaningless. They define what it can establish: under controlled conditions, patterns in measured brain responses can contain information that trained systems use to estimate stimulus-related features. The limits do rule out the leap from an impressive reconstruction to proof that an AI has recovered a person’s unrestricted thoughts.

How to read a mind-decoding headline
When a report says AI “read” a brain or “recreated” an image, check what happened in the experiment before accepting the broadest interpretation. A useful reading order is:
- Identify the task. Was the participant looking at an image, reading a caption or imagining something?
- Check what was known. Were stimuli controlled and paired with the brain responses during training?
- Separate the decoder from the generator. Which features came from measured responses, and which details could have been supplied by a pretrained output model?
- Define success. Does the result show semantic content, useful text, visual similarity or exact detail?
- Keep the scope local. Note the study’s subjects, scanner, dataset and task before comparing its result with another paper.
This distinction is especially important for privacy concerns. The cited demonstrations use experimental tasks and trained mappings; they do not show that a general-purpose scanner can reveal arbitrary private thoughts on demand. The evidence described here is about decoding responses under specified conditions, with output shaped by both those responses and the AI system used to render them.
