Boston Dynamics’ current Atlas is a fully electric humanoid designed for industrial work. It combines camera-based perception and tactile sensing with force and proprioceptive feedback, while electric actuation and whole-body control support movement and manipulation. In one company-described parts-handling demonstration, Atlas generated motions online in response to its surroundings; that does not establish that every task is autonomous or requires no human oversight.
Which Atlas does this describe?
Boston Dynamics retired its hydraulic research Atlas when it introduced a fully electric generation in April 2024. The company now presents the electric robot as an enterprise product for industrial material handling, rather than as a consumer robot. The older hydraulic machine remains important to the company’s research history, but its hardware should not be treated as a description of today’s electric product.

On January 5, 2026, Boston Dynamics announced a product version and said manufacturing would begin immediately, with deployments scheduled for Hyundai and Google DeepMind during 2026. Those were plans in the announcement, not independent confirmation of delivery or deployment outcomes. CEO Robert Playter called it “the best robot we have ever built”; that is his assessment, not an independent comparison.
How Atlas senses its surroundings
Boston Dynamics’ sales sheet lists tactile fingers and palm, as well as a 360-degree camera view. In the company’s engine-cover sequencing demonstration, it describes the robot using vision, force, and proprioceptive sensors. Proprioception is information about the robot’s own body and movement; together, these inputs help it respond to both the work area and changes during an action.

From seeing a bin to tracking a part
For the demonstrated task, a machine-learning vision model detects and localizes fixtures and individual bins. Atlas uses a specialized grasping policy to choose how to take hold of a part, then continuously estimates the state of the object it is manipulating. This is more than spotting an object once: the robot updates its estimate while handling it, so a change in the scene or an unsuccessful action can inform what it does next.
The public descriptions do not identify the number or models of cameras, the placement of force sensors, or the detailed sensor-fusion algorithm. Boston Dynamics and LG Innotek announced a collaboration in 2025 to develop vision-sensing components intended to help Atlas perceive in low visibility, poor weather, and darkness. The announcement describes development work, not a confirmed sensor configuration on every product.
What powers Atlas’s movement?
The current Atlas is fully electric. Boston Dynamics says the move to electric actuation reduced complexity and supports quieter operation and improved energy efficiency. Its product materials report 56 degrees of freedom and continuous joint range of motion, giving the company a basis for describing a broad range of possible whole-body movement.

Those facts do not reveal the detailed actuator design. Boston Dynamics’ public materials do not specify motor models or type, gearing or other transmission design, joint-level torque, or the complete control-system architecture. The company describes large behavior models for full-body control and work on whole-body mobility and manipulation, but does not publish a full control-stack diagram. It also says lessons from the retired hydraulic Atlas informed later work on balance, control, and whole-body motion; that research lineage does not make the electric Atlas hydraulic.
How Atlas performs a task autonomously
Engine-cover sequencing demonstration
In “Atlas Goes Hands On,” Boston Dynamics shows Atlas moving parts from supplier containers to a mobile sequencing dolly. The robot receives the bin locations, while its vision model detects and localizes bins and fixtures. A grasping policy guides how it picks up each part, and Atlas keeps estimating the manipulated object’s state as it works.
Boston Dynamics says the demonstrated motions are generated autonomously online, rather than being prescribed or teleoperated. The company also says Atlas can detect and respond to changing fixtures and failures, including an unsuccessful insertion, a trip, or a collision, using vision, force, and proprioceptive sensing. This is evidence for autonomy in a specific demonstrated workflow, not proof that every industrial task can run without setup, monitoring, or human exception handling.

Autonomy is one control option
The product materials list autonomous operation alongside VR teleoperation and tablet control. In practice, those are distinct ways to operate the robot; “autonomous” does not mean Atlas can only work without a human operator. Boston Dynamics also describes a customer process involving use-case preparation, evaluation, task training, and workflow integration. Its product page mentions a future connection to Orbit and integration with manufacturing execution systems, warehouse management systems, and other systems of record.

How learning and partnerships fit in
Boston Dynamics says its 2025 development work included reinforcement learning in simulation and from teleoperated demonstrations, improvements to 2D and 3D perception, gripper design and grasp practice, large behavior models for full-body control, and motion-capture and animation reinforcement-learning pipelines. These are reported research and development activities, not a complete disclosure of how any single production task is trained or controlled.
The company has also announced collaborations with NVIDIA on AI compute and learning tools, Toyota Research Institute on general-purpose humanoids and large behavior models, and the Robotics & AI Institute on reinforcement-learning training. Together with the LG Innotek vision-sensing effort, these partnerships indicate areas of work; they do not establish that a partner’s technology is a separately upgradeable product module or that one partner’s system wholly controls Atlas.
What the public information does—and does not—establish
Boston Dynamics’ materials explain the broad operating picture: electric actuation moves the robot, sensing provides information about its environment and body, and task-specific perception and control can generate and adjust movements. They also provide vendor specifications and a detailed example of one autonomous material-handling workflow.
They do not publish the full actuator construction, precise sensor inventory, complete autonomy architecture, safety-certification details, or independent comparative benchmarks. Nor do the available company announcements independently verify the planned 2026 deployments. Atlas is therefore best understood from public information as an industrial enterprise robot with described capabilities and specifications—not as a fully transparent design or a universally autonomous machine.
