How Bitcoin Miners Can Repurpose Power and Data-Center Infrastructure for AI

Bitcoin miners have power and site assets that can support AI and HPC data centers, but those assets are only a starting point—not proof of commissioned AI capacity.

Bitcoin miners can use power access, land, utility infrastructure and experience running large electrical loads as a starting point for AI and high-performance computing (HPC) data centers. But an energized mining site is not automatically ready for AI: shifting workloads can mean major construction, facility refurbishment, new operating arrangements or a complete site conversion.

The key distinction is between having power and having commissioned, customer-ready computing capacity. Company-reported portfolios, targets and plans are not proof that AI capacity is built, billable or profitable.

Can Bitcoin mining sites be used for AI data centers?

Yes, some mining operators are adapting sites for AI and HPC. What they can reuse is primarily the infrastructure around the computing workload: a site with grid access, power arrangements, land, buildings and utility systems, plus experience managing large electrical loads. The degree of reuse varies. “Repurposing” can mean allocating a power-rich site to another workload, refurbishing an existing building, constructing a specialized facility, or transitioning a particular site away from mining.

It is not simply a software change or a matter of plugging AI hardware into a mining operation. Bitcoin mining and AI/HPC use different computing hardware and facility configurations. Mining equipment does not become AI accelerators; a facility intended for AI must be designed and operated for the customer’s computing requirements.

Core Scientific says it is constructing, refurbishing, reallocating or converting facilities to support high-density colocation. Its 2025 Form 10-Q/A, filed March 2, 2026, describes plans to repurpose remaining facilities used for digital-asset mining as circumstances allow, while retaining access to electrical power under its control and meeting supplier and customer obligations. That is a company strategy, not evidence that every mining building can be converted in the same way.

Why are Bitcoin miners moving into AI?

Power access and energized sites can be valuable starting assets for data-center development. Miners already operate large electrical loads, so they may have experience with power arrangements and infrastructure that a new entrant would otherwise need to secure. AI/HPC can also create a different use for a site or its available power. Whether that use is more attractive depends on site economics, customer demand and the investment required to make the facility suitable.

MARA describes mining as an energy-responsive workload within a broader energy and digital-infrastructure platform. Its 2025 Form 10-K, filed March 2, 2026, says: “We use Bitcoin mining as a flexible, energy-responsive workload to monetize excess and underutilized power and to optimize power management across our portfolio.” The company also describes developing AI inference and HPC capabilities. This explains the strategic idea, but it does not establish that any particular site can switch workloads instantly or that AI is more profitable in every circumstance.

Companies are also reporting substantial portfolio figures that need careful interpretation. MARA reported approximately 1.9 GW of total capacity across 18 data centers in its 2025 Form 10-K. That is company-reported portfolio capacity, not the amount converted to AI. Bitdeer’s 2025 Annual Report, filed February 17, 2026, described approximately 620 MW of its Georgia platform and said it was exploring retrofit and dual-purpose deployments; this is not a measure of AI-ready or converted capacity.

What does it take to convert a Bitcoin mining facility to AI?

A conversion has at least two layers: securing a viable site and power arrangement, then delivering a facility that supports the intended computing workload. The first layer may be the miner’s strongest starting point. The second is where substantial engineering, construction and operating work may be needed. The filings do not establish one standard retrofit, rack density, cooling method, water requirement, power-usage-effectiveness target or conversion cost that applies to every site.

1. Establish what power is actually available

Start by distinguishing the site’s power measures rather than treating them as interchangeable. Gross power, contracted power, billable load, IT load and commissioned AI capacity can refer to different scopes or stages. In its 2025 Form 10-Q/A filed March 2, 2026, Core Scientific reported approximately 895 MW of billable power load and 1,370 MW of gross power as of September 30, 2025. Neither figure should be relabeled as commissioned AI capacity available to a tenant.

For a real project, a decision-maker would need to establish which power is controlled, committed, available to the proposed facility and deliverable on the schedule the customer needs. The cited company filings do not provide a universal conversion between these measurements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Determine the facility work and operating model

The physical scope may involve construction, refurbishment, reallocating existing space or conversion. High-density computing requirements make facility design and cooling relevant, but there is no single retrofit recipe in the cited disclosures. Bitdeer reported evaluating a modular-data-center collaboration with Submer; that is an evaluation, not evidence of a confirmed deployment or equipment used across its sites.

  • [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by

Core Scientific’s filing describes arrangements with CoreWeave and a transition toward colocation services. In this model, the facility operator adapts and supplies capacity for a third-party AI/HPC customer. The customer relationship and facility commitments therefore matter alongside the engineering plan.

3. Match the construction plan to an actual customer commitment

A site can have attractive power access without having a tenant, a finished facility or revenue-generating capacity. The decision to build, refurbish or convert should be read alongside what a customer has committed to, the capacity covered by the arrangement and the delivery schedule. In its March 2, 2026 filing, Core Scientific said it expected to deliver 250 MW of billable capacity by the end of 2025. That was a forward-looking expectation recorded in the filing; the cited information does not verify that the target was subsequently completed.

4. Account for investment and execution risk

AI/HPC expansion can require significant upfront investment and introduce operational complexity. Bitdeer identifies these as risks in its 2025 Annual Report. A project must also manage the practical transition from a mining operation, including any continuing supplier or customer obligations. Core Scientific says its repurposing plans are subject to circumstances and are intended to retain access to power under its control while fulfilling existing obligations.

Which operating model can a miner choose?

Miners do not all have to follow the same path. The examples below illustrate different approaches described in company filings; they do not establish that one model is universally superior.

Model How it works What the company has disclosed What remains uncertain
High-density colocation The operator builds, converts or adapts facility capacity for a third-party AI/HPC customer. Core Scientific describes colocation services and arrangements with CoreWeave. Its 2025 Form 10-Q/A, filed March 2, 2026, recorded an expectation to deliver 250 MW of billable capacity by the end of 2025. The cited filing’s 250 MW figure is an expectation, not verified completion. It does not establish that all gross or billable power is commissioned AI capacity.
Flexible or dual workload Mining continues at some sites or is treated as one workload within a portfolio that is developing AI/HPC capability. MARA describes mining as an energy-responsive workload and a platform for multiple workloads. Core Scientific says it continues profitable mining while converting facilities. The filings do not establish that a site can switch workloads instantly or specify a universal economic threshold for choosing one workload over another.
Site-specific conversion A selected mining site transitions toward data-center use, potentially ending mining at that location. CleanSpark reported a plan to transition power capacity at its Sandersville site to data-center use and expected to decommission mining there during fiscal year 2028, in its Form 10-Q for the quarter ended June 30, 2026, filed August 6, 2026. This is a reported plan, not a completed transition. It describes a particular site, not a general timetable for conversion.
Partnered development The miner contributes power-rich sites while a partner participates in developing, financing, building or operating infrastructure. MARA describes a joint venture with Starwood for selected sites. The disclosure describes an announced structure and plans; it does not establish completed construction or operating capacity.

These models shift control, capital needs, customer exposure and construction responsibility in different ways. The cited filings do not state a universal capital split, contract duration, conversion timeline or customer commitment for every approach. Those details need to be assessed for the specific project rather than inferred from a company’s headline capacity figure.

Can Bitcoin miners switch between mining and AI workloads?

Some operators describe maintaining mining while developing AI/HPC capacity or treating mining as a flexible workload. That is not the same as moving a mining machine directly into an AI workload: the computing equipment differs, and a facility configured for mining may need substantial changes to serve AI customers.

Flexibility is therefore better understood at the level of power allocation, sites and development plans than as a guaranteed on/off switch for a single facility. MARA frames mining as responsive to power conditions. Core Scientific describes continued profitable mining alongside facility conversion. Whether a particular site keeps mining, reallocates power or transitions exclusively depends on its economics, customer demand, infrastructure and obligations.

How should capacity claims be read?

Always keep the company’s exact metric, scope and as-of date attached to the number. A power figure can describe a portfolio, a site, gross power or billable load; none automatically means that an AI tenant can use the same amount today. “Billable” is not itself synonymous with fully commissioned AI capacity.

  • Core Scientific reported approximately 895 MW of billable power load and 1,370 MW of gross power as of September 30, 2025, in its 2025 Form 10-Q/A filed March 2, 2026. Those are different measures and should not be described as completed AI capacity.
  • Core Scientific’s expectation of 250 MW of billable capacity by the end of 2025 was a forward-looking statement in that filing, not a verified completion figure.
  • MARA’s approximately 1.9 GW across 18 data centers is a company-reported total portfolio capacity in its 2025 Form 10-K filed March 2, 2026, not an AI-conversion total.
  • Bitdeer’s approximately 620 MW Georgia platform figure comes from its 2025 Annual Report filed February 17, 2026; the filing’s exploration of retrofit and dual-purpose deployments does not make all of that platform AI-ready.

Plans also need their original status and date. CleanSpark’s Sandersville transition and MARA’s Starwood joint venture are reported plans or structures, not proof of finished facilities. Bitdeer’s evaluation of modular-data-center collaboration likewise does not establish deployment.

What should operators evaluate before choosing a site?

Site choice remains specific to power, electricity cost, cooling and location. CleanSpark lists these factors as relevant to mining operations, and its Sandersville plan illustrates that a company may decide to transition one site rather than treat its entire portfolio alike. For AI/HPC, operators also need to understand the target customer’s facility and service requirements; the filings do not supply a common technical threshold that would make every mining location suitable.

  • Power: Identify the exact capacity measure, power control and availability relevant to the project.
  • Economics: Compare the site’s electricity cost and the capital required for the proposed facility with the opportunity to continue mining or use another workload. The disclosures do not establish a universal break-even point.
  • Facility suitability: Establish the construction, refurbishment, electrical and cooling work needed for the intended customer. Do not assume an existing mining building meets high-density requirements as-is.
  • Customer and contract: Separate announced capacity targets from capacity covered by a customer arrangement and from capacity actually delivered.
  • Transition obligations: Account for existing suppliers, customers and mining activity when planning construction or reallocation.
  • Execution: Consider the upfront investment and operational complexity Bitdeer flags for AI/HPC expansion, as well as the schedule and operating capabilities required.

What the examples do—and do not—show

The filings show several real strategic directions: Core Scientific’s colocation transition, MARA’s flexible-workload and partnered-development approach, CleanSpark’s site-specific Sandersville plan, and Bitdeer’s AI/HPC hosting and retrofit exploration. Together, they show that miners see power and sites as potential foundations for another infrastructure business.

They do not prove that announcements equal commissioned capacity, that every energized mine can be converted economically, or that an AI/HPC strategy will be profitable. The strongest reading is narrower: existing power and site assets may reduce one barrier to data-center development, while facility conversion, customer commitments, capital, operations and timing remain separate hurdles.
