Bitcoin insurance is not one universal guarantee. It usually means a private policy that a custodian buys for specified losses in its custody operation, or a policy written around a defined self-custody arrangement. Protection exists only when the insured party, Bitcoin or related property, event, security conditions, limits and claims procedure all match the policy wording.
These policies generally address custody risks such as theft, certain hacks, employee fraud or key compromise—not a fall in Bitcoin’s market price. They are also different from U.S. government protections: FDIC deposit insurance does not cover crypto assets issued by non-banks or a crypto company’s failure, and SIPC is not a blanket fund for Bitcoin.

What “Bitcoin insurance” means in practice
The phrase describes several arrangements rather than a standard product. In a custodial model, an exchange, broker, fund administrator or specialist custodian holds keys or controls transfers for customers. The operator may purchase commercial crime, cyber or related insurance for losses arising from that operation. A customer may benefit indirectly, but the customer is not automatically the named insured and may not have a direct right to bring a claim.
In a self-custody model, a policy is designed around a particular wallet setup, signing process, backup method and security controls. The policy may respond to a defined key compromise or other custody loss. Eligibility can depend on the exact wallet architecture and the policyholder’s location. A hardware wallet, metal seed backup or safe is a security measure, not insurance.

What government protection does—and does not—apply
FDIC deposit insurance
The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation’s July 28, 2022 fact sheet states: “The FDIC does not insure assets issued by non-bank entities, such as crypto companies.” FDIC coverage applies to qualifying deposits at insured banks, within statutory limits and ownership categories. Bitcoin held with a non-bank exchange, wallet provider or crypto custodian is not transformed into an insured bank deposit merely because dollars may move through a bank.
The same FDIC guidance says deposit insurance does not protect against the default, insolvency or bankruptcy of any non-bank entity, including crypto custodians, exchanges, brokers, wallet providers and neobanks. It also does not cover theft or fraud losses. A private crime policy and FDIC deposit insurance therefore solve different problems.

The Securities Investor Protection Corporation protects qualifying securities and cash held in the custody of a SIPC-member broker when that broker fails. SIPC is not general crypto insurance. A digital asset that does not qualify as a security is outside that protection, and SIPC does not guarantee an investment’s market value. Confirm the institution’s status and the legal classification of the asset instead of treating a brokerage relationship as a Bitcoin guarantee.
How a custodial policy is supposed to work
A typical custodial arrangement has several layers. The customer deposits or transfers Bitcoin to the platform; the platform controls wallets and internal approvals; an insurer agrees to reimburse the insured party for listed losses; and the customer agreement explains how any recovery is handled. Every layer matters.

1. Identify the insured party
Look for the policyholder and named insured. It may be the operating company, a parent, a fund or another entity—not each individual account holder. Ask whether customers are additional insureds, loss payees or beneficiaries, and whether they can submit a claim directly. If the documents do not grant those rights, an insurer may deal only with the custodian.
2. Define the insured property
Policies can distinguish Bitcoin held in particular wallets from fiat balances, other tokens, customer claims or company-owned assets. Check whether hot wallets, cold storage, omnibus wallets, segregated addresses and assets held with a sub-custodian meet the definition of covered property. A policy covering a custody operation does not automatically cover every asset shown in an account interface.

3. Match the event to a covered cause
Commercial crime descriptions may list theft, employee collusion or fraud, physical loss or damage to key material, a security breach, hacking or a fraudulent transfer. Those labels are not promises that every incident qualifies. Definitions can require an unauthorized taking, a specific control failure, evidence of an outside attack or compliance with approval procedures. User error, an authorized transfer induced by a scam and a disputed trade can be treated differently.
4. Apply limits, deductibles and sublimits
Review the per-occurrence limit, annual aggregate, deductibles and any lower sublimit for a particular cause. An aggregate is the maximum the policy pays across covered claims during the policy period; it is not a separate allowance for every customer. Multiple incidents or customers can draw on the same pool, and earlier claims can reduce what remains.
5. Follow the claims conditions
Policies commonly require prompt notice, preservation of logs and wallet evidence, cooperation with an investigation, police or regulator reports and documentation of ownership and value. Missing a deadline or changing a compromised system before evidence is captured can jeopardize a claim. The customer agreement may impose additional notice and dispute procedures.

What a reported $320 million policy figure actually tells you
An iShares disclosure reports that Coinbase Global described a commercial crime policy of up to $320,000,000. The disclosure also says the policy is shared among customers of Coinbase Global and its subsidiaries and may not be sufficient or available for every possible loss. This is a reported ceiling in that particular fund disclosure, not a $320 million entitlement for each account holder, nor a universal or permanent market amount.
The figure illustrates why a headline limit needs context. To estimate practical protection, you would need the policy period, covered entities, covered property, aggregate wording, deductibles, sublimits, exclusions, claims already paid and the customer’s legal rights. Those details can change at renewal and are not established by the number alone.
What private Bitcoin policies may cover
| Risk or event | How to describe the possible protection | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Theft or unauthorized taking | May be covered when the policy’s definition and security conditions are met. | Who suffered the loss, how “theft” is defined, evidence required and any sublimit. |
| Employee collusion or fraud | May fall within commercial crime coverage for specified dishonest acts. | Whether contractors, directors, affiliates and insiders are included or excluded. |
| Hack or security breach | Some policies describe cyber or crime protection for a defined breach. | Required controls, forensic proof, exclusions for known vulnerabilities and notice deadlines. |
| Fraudulent transfer | A listed transfer event may be covered under specified conditions. | Approval rules, authentication requirements and whether a customer-authorized scam is excluded. |
| Damage to key material | Some descriptions include physical loss or damage affecting keys. | Whether the key arrangement is an eligible insured asset and how recovery is valued. |
| Custodian insolvency or bankruptcy | Not supplied by FDIC insurance; private treatment must be stated separately in the contract. | Creditor status, segregation terms and any explicit insolvency provision. |
| Bitcoin price decline | Custody insurance is not price protection. | Any valuation clause, which normally addresses the covered loss rather than market performance. |
| Scams or Ponzi-related schemes | Often identified as a gap; a scam is not automatically a covered theft. | Whether deception, authorized payment and investment-scheme losses are excluded. |
| Lost hardware or blockchain failure | Broad protection should not be assumed; these are commonly cited limitations. | Device-loss wording, network-event exclusions and recovery obligations. |
What Bitcoin insurance usually does not cover
Market volatility
If Bitcoin falls from $70,000 to $40,000, that is an investment loss, not a custody incident. The NAIC’s cryptocurrency overview lists market fluctuations among risks generally not covered. A self-custody insurance description from AnchorWatch likewise distinguishes custody loss from ordinary price changes. A policy can reimburse a covered theft according to its valuation clause without compensating an investor for a declining market.
Every form of fraud or social engineering
“Fraud” in a policy may mean dishonest conduct by an employee or an unauthorized transfer meeting a technical definition. It does not necessarily include a person voluntarily sending Bitcoin to a scammer, approving a malicious transaction or participating in a Ponzi scheme. The NAIC identifies Ponzi-related schemes among common gaps. Read the authorized-transfer and deception exclusions closely.
Automatic protection against insolvency
Crime insurance is designed for defined wrongful acts or losses, not necessarily a custodian’s inability to pay debts. FDIC guidance expressly excludes non-bank crypto-company insolvency and bankruptcy from deposit insurance. If insolvency protection matters, examine asset-segregation language, trust or custody terms and the customer’s position in a wind-down; do not infer it from a crime-policy limit.

Any lost device, seed phrase or network outage
NAIC materials cite direct hardware loss and various blockchain failures as risks that may remain outside coverage. A policy can require a defined security configuration, documented backups or a recovery process. Losing a phone, destroying a backup, choosing the wrong address or experiencing a chain reorganization may not meet the insured-event definition.

Self-custody insurance can be useful only when the policy is written for the way you actually control keys. Start with the wallet and signing design, not the advertised dollar limit.
- Describe the setup precisely. Record wallet type, multisignature or single-signature design, signing devices, geographic storage locations and backup method.
- Check eligible assets and networks. Confirm that Bitcoin, the specific addresses or wallet software and any permitted transaction paths fall within the policy definition.
- Read the security conditions. Look for required approvals, device separation, access controls, backup testing, password practices and prohibited actions.
- Define covered loss events. Determine whether the policy addresses key compromise, theft, malicious transfer, physical destruction or only particular combinations of those events.
- Confirm proof and recovery duties. Ask what logs, transaction records, incident reports and ownership evidence must be supplied, and how quickly notice is required.
- Verify jurisdiction and renewal terms. Eligibility, governing law, claims venue, limits and exclusions can vary by country and can change at renewal.
AnchorWatch describes custody insurance for certain self-custody loss events, including key compromise, while separating that protection from price changes. Its provider-authored FAQ does not replace the operative policy. Confirm current geographic availability, eligibility and the full wording before relying on the arrangement.
How to compare a custodian’s insurance with self-custody coverage
| Comparison point | Custodial service policy | Self-custody policy |
|---|---|---|
| Who controls keys | The platform or its designated custodians control operational wallets. | The policyholder controls a defined wallet and signing process. |
| Likely insured party | Often the operating company, fund or related entity; customer rights must be confirmed. | Potentially the individual or entity that purchases the policy, subject to eligibility. |
| Asset definition | May cover specified customer assets held in the custodian’s approved arrangements. | Usually limited to the declared wallets, keys and procedures. |
| Shared limits | A commercial policy can have a shared aggregate across customers and subsidiaries. | Limits and deductibles apply to the policyholder’s declared arrangement, according to the contract. |
| Main evidence | Custody records, transfer logs, internal controls and incident investigations. | Wallet configuration, signing evidence, backups, transaction history and incident documentation. |
| Key uncertainty | Whether the customer can claim directly and whether insolvency is addressed. | Whether the actual setup remained compliant with every security condition. |
Do not rank either model from a single advertised limit. A smaller policy with a clear direct-claim right and suitable conditions may be more useful than a larger shared limit that protects only the operator.

The bottom line for Bitcoin holders
Bitcoin insurance is targeted risk transfer, not a government guarantee and not protection against Bitcoin’s volatility. A custodian’s commercial crime policy may respond to a specified theft, hack, employee fraud, key-material loss or fraudulent transfer, but the policy may protect the custodian rather than give each customer a personal limit. Self-custody coverage can address defined key or custody failures when the declared setup and security conditions are followed.
FDIC insurance does not cover non-bank crypto assets or a crypto company’s bankruptcy, while SIPC applies only within its defined broker, security and cash framework. Treat every “insured” claim as incomplete until you know who is insured, what asset and event are covered, how much remains available, which exclusions apply and how you can prove and submit the loss.
