How Battery Storage Helps Solar Power Meet Electricity Demand After Sunset

Solar batteries can store electricity when solar output is high and release it after sunset. Their contribution depends on stored energy, discharge power, duration and losses.

Solar panels generate electricity while sunlight is available, but their output falls as the sun sets—even when electricity demand remains high in the evening. A battery helps close that timing gap: it stores some electricity when solar generation is abundant and releases it later. It shifts energy through time; it does not create additional energy, and the amount it can deliver depends on its capacity, power, duration, operating limits and conversion losses.

Why solar generation and evening demand can miss each other

Solar electricity is produced during daylight, so its availability changes over the course of the day. Demand follows a different pattern: people may continue using lighting, appliances, heating or cooling after solar output begins to decline. The result is a timing mismatch, not necessarily a shortage of energy over the entire day. The challenge is having enough supply at the hours when it is needed.

A battery can help by taking in electricity at one time and returning it at another. In a solar-plus-storage system, it can charge when solar generation is high and discharge after sunset, when demand rises or solar production has fallen. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) describes this as one way to balance electricity generation and consumption. The details of the schedule depend on the system and the grid or customer operating it; there is no single schedule that applies everywhere. DOE’s overview of solar integration and storage explains the role of storage in that balance.

How a battery moves solar electricity into later hours

Charging: store electricity when it is available

During periods when solar panels produce more electricity than a customer or grid needs immediately, a connected battery may charge. The stored energy is then available for later use. At grid scale, a battery may also charge from other sources; pairing storage with solar does not mean every unit of stored electricity necessarily came from solar. How a particular system is connected and dispatched determines its charging sources.

The basic sequence is straightforward: electricity flows into the battery, is held there as stored energy, and is converted back into electricity when the battery discharges. That process makes storage a way to shift the timing of supply. It does not make a solar panel produce at night or cause a battery to generate energy independently.

Discharging: deliver power when solar output declines

After sunset, the battery can send electricity to a home, a business or the grid, depending on how it is connected and controlled. This can reduce the gap between available solar generation and demand at that moment. A battery may also help smooth short-term changes in solar output, although that is a different service from supplying energy through a long evening peak. DOE describes storage as useful for balancing generation and demand and for smoothing variations in renewable output. DOE’s Solar-Plus-Storage 101 discusses these roles.

Energy capacity, power capacity and duration mean different things

Two measurements help explain what a battery can do. Energy capacity describes how much electricity it can store, commonly expressed in kilowatt-hours (kWh) or megawatt-hours (MWh). Power capacity describes how quickly it can deliver electricity, measured in kilowatts (kW) or megawatts (MW). A large energy store cannot necessarily meet a sharp demand spike unless its power capacity is also high enough.

Measure What it tells you Example or unit
Energy capacity How much energy the system can store 100 MWh, as in the AES Lawai Solar Project battery identified by DOE
Power capacity How quickly the system can deliver energy 25 MW in the illustrative calculation below
Duration at a stated output How long the stored energy would last at that output, before operating limits and losses Energy capacity divided by power capacity

For a simple nominal calculation, 100 MWh divided by 25 MW equals four hours at a constant 25 MW output. This is an illustration of the capacity-to-power relationship, not a claim about the operating settings or actual performance of the AES Lawai project. Actual usable duration can differ because of operating limits and energy lost during conversion and retrieval. The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) explains this duration calculation in its March 25, 2022 discussion of utility-scale battery duration.

For a homeowner, the same distinction applies at a smaller scale: energy capacity is the amount available to use later, while power capacity influences how many loads can run at once. A battery intended to cover a brief high-power need and one intended to supply a lower, steady load for several hours face different sizing questions. Neither a capacity figure alone nor a duration label says exactly how much of a particular household’s nighttime use will be covered.

How long batteries can shift energy

Storage systems are built and operated for different durations and services. EIA describes batteries of four to eight hours as commonly used for daily load shifting, including moving solar electricity into evening peaks in solar-rich regions. That range is a description of a use category in EIA’s 2022 account, not a guarantee that a battery in that category will supply all electricity needed overnight or meet every project’s evening demand.

Short-duration storage can respond to brief fluctuations or support a burst of demand. Longer-duration systems can shift energy across a longer span, which matters when solar production is low for more than a short interval. Duration is always tied to the rate of discharge: the same store of energy lasts longer if delivered at a lower power level. EIA’s explanation of how utility-scale battery duration depends on use provides context for that relationship.

When evaluating a system for a particular need, ask how much usable energy it can provide at the relevant output and for how long. A system that can discharge at a high rate for a short time is not interchangeable with one designed to supply a more modest rate over a longer period. The relevant question is not simply whether a battery is “large,” but whether its energy and power capabilities match the hours and loads it is meant to serve.

How grid operators may use solar-charged batteries

One common grid pattern is to charge batteries during the day when solar production is high, then discharge them as evening or overnight demand rises. In some market contexts, the EIA notes, daytime charging may coincide with lower prices and later discharge with higher prices. That describes dispatch in particular settings; price patterns, charging windows and operational priorities are not universal. A system operator may schedule a battery according to grid conditions and the services the system is expected to provide. EIA’s battery-storage discussion describes this general market pattern.

At grid scale, storage can move some available solar energy from peak-production hours toward peak-consumption hours. The amount of demand it can serve depends on the battery’s energy capacity, discharge power, duration and dispatch. A battery with limited stored energy cannot keep supplying power indefinitely, so storage can contribute to meeting evening demand without necessarily covering the entire evening or replacing all other sources of electricity.

The National Laboratory of the Rockies analyzes solar-plus-storage across both distributed and utility-scale systems, including the benefit of shifting energy from peak production to peak consumption. Those scales serve different loads and should not be compared as if they were equivalent. Its solar-plus-storage analysis describes the range of system applications.

Household batteries and grid batteries solve different problems

At home: use stored energy at night or during an outage

A homeowner may connect a battery to solar panels so some stored electricity is available at night or during an outage, as DOE explains in its solar-plus-storage overview. Whether the system can power a home during an outage depends on its configuration and the loads it is set up to support. A household example demonstrates how storage can shift electricity for one customer; it does not show that a home battery can meet a grid’s evening demand.

On the grid: shift energy for many users

Utility-scale storage operates at a different scale and is used as part of electricity-system planning and dispatch. DOE identifies the AES Lawai Solar Project in Kauai, Hawaii, as a solar project paired with a 100-megawatt-hour battery. That named project is a concrete example of solar paired with storage, not a national average, current market statistic or universal design specification. The project figure comes from DOE’s solar integration overview.

Distributed systems and utility-scale projects may both shift energy, but the scale of their energy and power capacity, their intended users and their operating arrangements differ. The useful comparison is the service each system is intended to provide—not just its battery capacity in isolation.

What batteries cannot do, and what affects delivered energy

  • They do not generate electricity. A battery can return energy it has stored, but it cannot create a new supply source after sunset.
  • They cannot deliver more than their limits allow. Energy capacity bounds the stored amount, while power capacity constrains the delivery rate. Those limits determine how much demand can be met and for how long.
  • They return less energy than they take in. Energy is lost during conversion and retrieval, so the amount delivered is lower than the amount originally used to charge the battery. DOE notes these losses in its storage explanation.
  • They do not guarantee whole-night coverage. The outcome depends on stored energy, the output required, operating limits and how the system is dispatched. A four-to-eight-hour daily load-shifting category, for example, should not be read as a promise to power every load all night.
  • They do not make every solar installation outage-ready. A battery can provide outage resilience only depending on system configuration; the existence of storage alone does not establish which circuits or loads will remain powered.

These constraints are why a battery’s headline energy capacity is not enough to predict its contribution after sunset. To estimate the role of a specific system, identify the available stored energy, the required discharge power, the length of the period to cover, and the system’s operating limits and losses. At grid level, dispatch decisions also affect when stored energy is released. For household cost, payback or savings, local tariffs, incentives, installation quotes and system assumptions are necessary; a single generic figure would not establish a result for a particular location or system.

How to interpret a battery’s contribution

When someone says a battery helps solar meet demand after sunset, the precise meaning is that it can shift some electricity generated or otherwise available earlier into later hours. The scale of that contribution should be described with both energy and power, plus the duration at the intended output. It should also be clear whether the example is a home system or a grid-scale installation, and whether the claim is about nighttime use, outage backup, short-term balancing or daily load shifting.

That framing avoids two common misunderstandings: treating storage as a source of new electricity, and assuming that any battery can supply an unlimited amount of power for the whole night. Solar-plus-storage can make daytime generation useful beyond daylight, but the evening contribution is bounded by what the battery can store, deliver and return after losses.
