How Batteries, Motors and Smart Controls Are Reshaping Cordless Power Tools

Cordless tool performance depends on the complete system—not voltage alone. Learn how batteries, brushless motors, electronics and platform compatibility shape tool choice.

Cordless power tools now draw their performance from a coordinated system: battery pack, motor, electronics and tool design. Brushless motors, higher-output battery pairings and expanding battery platforms have broadened what cordless tools can do, but a voltage label or a manufacturer’s peak-power claim alone cannot tell you how a tool will perform on your job. Compare the complete tool-and-battery combination for the work you actually do.

What has changed in cordless power tools?

The main shift is from treating the battery as the whole story to designing the battery, motor, electronics and tool together. Milwaukee describes its cordless ecosystem in those terms, while Makita presents its motors, batteries and communications as coordinated elements. That systems approach matters because the pack supplies energy, the motor converts it to motion, electronics manage their interaction, and the tool’s design determines how that output is applied. Manufacturer descriptions establish how companies position their systems; they are not a neutral comparison of performance.

Makita’s own timeline traces its cordless development from a first cordless tool in 1978 to its 18V LXT lithium-ion system in 2005, an 18V brushless impact driver in 2009 and a cordless tool powered by two 18V batteries in 2012. These dates are the company’s historical milestones, not independently assessed claims about industry firsts. Its U.S. LXT page describes a system of more than 350 products, a manufacturer-reported catalog count for 2026. DEWALT’s current 20V MAX page claims more than 250 products; the page does not give that count a separate publication date.

How do the main technologies work together?

Battery packs and platform design

Lithium-ion packs helped make broad cordless tool families practical. Today, platform design is also about compatibility, capacity and which tools can use the same battery family. Makita describes LXT as an 18V slide-style system and XGT as a 40V/80V max system. DEWALT describes FLEXVOLT batteries as usable with specified 20V MAX, 60V MAX and 120V MAX tools. These are proprietary systems, not interchangeable standards: verify the exact battery family and tool model before buying or swapping packs.

  • One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips

Capacity is one part of the decision, not a simple measure of tool power. A larger-capacity pack may be useful for longer work, but can also affect size, weight and handling. Consider how long the tool must run, how it will be held and whether the battery fits the task; the manufacturer pages cited here do not provide a neutral, cross-brand comparison of runtime, weight or charging.

Brushless motors

Brushless motors are a prominent feature in current cordless platforms. Makita identifies its 2009 18V brushless impact driver as a company milestone; Bosch and Milwaukee also describe brushless technology in their systems or products. Milwaukee characterizes its POWERSTATE brushless motors as purpose-built for tool demands. These statements document manufacturer features and positioning, but the cited material does not provide a common independent test proving a particular efficiency, lifespan or performance advantage in every application.

Electronics and coordination

Tool electronics help coordinate the battery and motor as a system, making electronics part of the performance picture alongside pack and motor design. Milwaukee’s account of its cordless ecosystem names battery-pack technology, motors and tool electronics; its MX FUEL materials also identify motor, intelligence/control and battery technologies as platform elements. Those descriptions support considering system coordination, but do not establish unlisted proprietary functions or quantify a cross-brand advantage.

Higher output depends on the pairing

Bosch Professional says its BITURBO tools can deliver “up to 2,000 W” when paired with a ProCORE18V battery rated at least 5.5Ah. This is Bosch’s conditional performance claim for that specified pairing, not an independent measurement, a result for every 18V tool, or proof that all cordless tools match corded tools. Bosch’s 18V system page is regional, so availability and wording may differ by country.

Can cordless tools be as powerful as corded tools?

Sometimes, for a particular tool and task; there is no sound yes-or-no answer for cordless tools as a whole. The comparison depends on the exact tool, battery, workpiece or load, and test conditions. A peak-output claim such as Bosch’s conditional figure is not the same as a sustained, independently measured result across tools. For a meaningful comparison, look for tests that identify the tool model, battery, task and operating conditions, and compare like with like. The manufacturer materials cited here do not establish a neutral winner or a market-wide cordless-versus-corded result.

Why are cordless platforms expanding into equipment?

Cordless systems are moving beyond familiar drills, drivers and saws into larger equipment. Milwaukee positions MX FUEL as a cordless equipment platform. In a January 20, 2026 announcement, Makita introduced a 40V max XGT Motor Unit intended for OEM integration as a replacement for gas engines in applications including power screeds, backpack vibrators, power trowels, winches and water pumps. The announcement presents the unit as a way for equipment makers to use the XGT battery ecosystem; it does not by itself establish comparative operating cost, runtime or performance against a gas engine.

How should you compare cordless systems for your work?

  1. Start with the application. Separate light assembly, drilling, cutting, concrete work and equipment use; a platform’s headline specification does not establish its suitability for every tool class.
  2. Compare evidence for the exact tool and pack. Seek results that name the model, battery, load and test conditions. Keep manufacturer claims distinct from independent testing, and do not treat peak output as a measure of sustained performance.
  3. Balance capacity with handling. Choose a pack around the work duration and tool balance you need. More capacity may support longer work but can add bulk; compare the actual packs and charging arrangements available to you.
  4. Check platform compatibility and likely expansion. Identify which tools share the battery family, then confirm compatibility for the exact model and regional version. Do not assume packs cross between proprietary platforms.
  5. Assess ergonomics and portability. Tool size and balance matter, particularly for overhead or extended work. Bosch presents compact 12V options for lighter or overhead tasks, illustrating why voltage alone is not a buying rule.

For example, a buyer choosing a cordless power tool battery for a drill should verify the drill’s exact battery family and model compatibility, then weigh capacity against the handling demands of the job. A battery from another platform is not a safe assumption just because its voltage label looks similar.

What the available claims do—and do not—show

The cited product and company pages establish manufacturer-described features, platform relationships and selected company claims. They do not provide a shared independent test of runtime, efficiency, durability or power across brands, nor do they support a market-wide forecast. Catalog counts can change as manufacturers update their pages, so treat them as page claims rather than fixed measures of system quality.
