How Bacteria Use Cell-to-Cell Collisions to Regulate Collective Movement

A 2026 Nature Microbiology study reports that Pseudomonas aeruginosa uses pilus-linked sensing of cell collisions to alter reversals, collective order and maze navigation on surfaces.

A bacterium’s collision with a neighbor can do more than change its direction: it can act as a sensory signal that reshapes how a population moves. In a study published in Nature Microbiology on 6 October 2026, researchers report that Pseudomonas aeruginosa uses type IV pili and the Pil–Chp signaling system to detect physical obstruction and trigger rapid reversals while twitching across surfaces. The effect was associated with less collective alignment in crowded areas and coordinated outward movement at colony edges.

What the study found

The study examines twitching motility: surface movement powered by type IV pili, which extend, attach to a surface and retract. When a pilus encounters an obstruction, signaling associated with the Pil–Chp system can prompt a polarity switch and a contact-induced reversal (CR), changing the cell’s direction within seconds.

The authors’ central point is that cell contact can provide information as well as impose a physical obstacle. As they put it, “Our results show that bacterial populations can also regulate the degree of collective order through information generated by those same interactions.”

How collisions affect movement in crowded areas

The researchers compared populations at 10% and 70% surface coverage, the study’s low- and high-density conditions. These are experimental settings, not universal thresholds for bacterial populations. At high coverage, wild-type cells showed less clustering than the non-reversing ΔpilH mutant, which formed clusters and displayed stronger collective organization. Wild type and the mechanosensing mutant ΔpilG were more evenly distributed in the reported comparisons.

In simulations, increasing the probability of contact-induced reversals disrupted group formation and nematic order—the tendency of neighboring cells to align along a common axis. The study also compared strains with different cell shapes and reversal behaviors. Its results indicate that cell shape alone did not account for the observed organization; shape and reversal behavior should not be treated as interchangeable explanations.

Why colony edges behave differently

At colony edges, wild-type cells moved with greater directional organization, and the signaling protein PilG polarized toward unexplored space. The authors interpret this pattern as a response to uneven crowding: cells at the front encounter less obstruction in the outward direction than cells in the colony core. The same feedback that disrupts alignment in crowded regions can therefore support coordinated movement into open space at the edge.

What the maze experiments show

In experiments using fabricated micromazes, reversing cells navigated more effectively than non-reversing cells, which tended to jam at boundaries. The maze-motility movies ran for 4 hours; a separate competition movie in a micromaze ran for 3.5 hours. Those durations describe particular experiments, not a general measure of bacterial movement.

In competition assays under the conditions reported, wild type outcompeted ΔpilG and ΔpilH. The authors’ control comparisons did not attribute that result to differences in growth rate. These findings support a role for reversal behavior in spreading and navigation in the study’s surface-motility setup; they do not establish that the same advantage applies in other environments.

What the findings do—and do not—establish

The authors combined live imaging, single-cell tracking, mutant comparisons, agent-based simulations, competition assays and micromaze experiments. Together, these methods link a physical obstruction to a rapid signaling and motility response, then examine how that response affects organization and movement at the population scale.

  • Established in this study: P. aeruginosa can use pilus-linked mechanosensing to respond to cell contact during surface twitching, and reversal behavior affects collective organization and maze navigation in the reported setups.
  • Not established: that all bacterial species use this mechanism, or that these surface experiments predict infection outcomes. The paper is a mechanistic microbiology study, not a clinical trial.
  • Broader implication: collisions may help regulate collective behavior because they provide feedback as well as physically redirecting cells. The authors’ comparison with chemical communication, and possible analogies to engineered active matter or robotic swarms, are conceptual implications rather than systems tested in the paper.

The study is by Laure Le Blanc, Giona Cattaneo, Nathel Heraud and colleagues. The version of record, including links to representative datasets and analysis and simulation code, is available from Nature Microbiology.
