Azo-COP-2 is a research-stage nanoporous polymer studied for separating carbon dioxide (CO2) from nitrogen (N2). It preferentially adsorbs CO2; nitrogen is taken up less strongly, so the material can separate the gases rather than chemically converting or eliminating either one. In laboratory work, ultraviolet (UV) light also changed its CO2 uptake, suggesting a way to trigger release.
How does Azo-COP-2 capture CO2?
Azo-COP-2 has pores that adsorb gas molecules. Under the conditions studied, it takes up CO2 more strongly than N2. In a gas mixture, that difference can help retain CO2 while allowing a stream richer in nitrogen to pass. This is selective adsorption, not a reaction that creates nitrogen or makes the captured CO2 disappear.

The 2019 study by Siyao Li, Nicholaus Prasetya, and Bradley P. Ladewig examined Azo-COP-2 both as a nanoporous adsorbent and as a filler in mixed-matrix membranes (MMMs), in which particles are incorporated into a polymer. The authors described the material in their abstract as having “exceptional CO2/N2 separation performance”; that is their characterization of their results, not a universal ranking against all separation materials. Can UV light release the captured CO2?
In the reported experiments, UV irradiation lowered Azo-COP-2’s CO2 uptake compared with the nonirradiated material. The author manuscript also reports an instantaneous release of up to 25% of adsorbed CO2 during dynamic photoswitching experiments. These results demonstrate a light-responsive change in adsorption and a measured release response; they do not establish complete regeneration of an industrial capture bed, repeated-cycle durability, or net energy savings once illumination and process equipment are considered. How much can the membrane improve CO2 separation?
For polysulfone-based mixed-matrix membranes containing Azo-COP-2, the 2019 study reported maximum increases of up to 160% in CO2 permeability and up to 66.7% in CO2/N2 selectivity. These are the largest improvements reported for the experimental composites in that study, not guaranteed outcomes for other membrane formulations or operating conditions.
Permeability describes how readily a gas moves through a membrane; selectivity describes how strongly the membrane favors CO2 over N2. They answer different questions, so a higher value for one does not by itself establish overall process performance. The figures concern polymer composites, while the UV-triggered release result concerns dynamic photoswitching experiments; neither should be treated as a complete industrial process result.

What determines whether a photoresponsive material is useful?
A single selectivity number cannot establish which material is best for practical capture. Comparisons need to account for the material form and test conditions as well as the balance among capacity, separation, and release.
- CO2 capacity: how much CO2 the material adsorbs under the stated conditions.
- CO2/N2 selectivity: how strongly it favors CO2 over nitrogen, measured using a method suitable for comparison.
- Light response: how adsorption changes with illumination and how much captured CO2 is released.
- Operating conditions: temperature, pressure, and gas mixture can affect results.
- Material form: powder adsorbent data and polymer-composite membrane data describe different uses and are not interchangeable.
Related studies illustrate why those distinctions matter. Work on azobenzene-functionalized UiO-66 discusses tradeoffs among CO2 uptake, CO2/N2 selectivity, and UV-triggered desorption, identifying Azo(33.3)-UiO-66 as a promising balance within the family examined. A separate 2019 screening study of DMOF-1 variants found promising CO2/N2 separation for amino-functionalized and azobenzene-functionalized materials, and proposed lower nitrogen affinity as one possible explanation for Azo-DMOF-1 selectivity. These findings provide context, not a direct performance ranking against Azo-COP-2. UiO-66 family study · DMOF-1 screening study.

How does newer Azo-UIO-66 work compare?
A 2025 study reported a maximum CO2 adsorption of 5.069 mmol/g for nanoporous carbon incorporating Azo-UIO-66 under visible light at 25 °C and 1 bar, along with a reported CO2/N2 selectivity of 533.328. This is a different material system from Azo-COP-2. The selectivity figure should not be ranked against values from other studies without matching their gas mixtures, conditions, and measurement methods. The cited work establishes laboratory research on an adsorbent and membrane filler, not commercial deployment or a product available for purchase. The reported photoswitching results are promising as a research direction, but they do not by themselves show that light-driven release is economical, scalable, or suitable for an operating CO2 capture plant.
