AWS CloudFormation automates a live-streaming workflow by provisioning and configuring the AWS resources that ingest, transcode, package, secure, and deliver video. In AWS’s reference design, MediaLive handles ingest and transcoding, MediaPackage prepares streams for playback, and CloudFront delivers them to viewers. CloudFormation builds these components as a coordinated stack; it does not itself process or transmit video.
How the AWS live-streaming workflow fits together
AWS’s Live Streaming on AWS architecture connects a video source to viewers through several services. The reference solution uses redundant ingest feeds and an adaptive-bitrate output, then packages that output for different playback formats.

- Ingest and transcode with MediaLive. Two feeds provide ingest redundancy. MediaLive processes an ingest feed and produces adaptive-bitrate HLS output, with multiple renditions for different viewing conditions.
- Package and originate with MediaPackage. MediaPackage ingests MediaLive’s output and exposes custom endpoints for HLS, DASH, and CMAF playback formats.
- Authorize access to the origin. CloudFront uses MediaPackage endpoints as its origin and sends a custom HTTP header containing a CDN identifier. The identifier is created during deployment and stored in Secrets Manager; MediaPackage uses it to authorize playback requests.
- Deliver to viewers with CloudFront. CloudFront distributes the stream. The solution also provisions a demo HTML player in an S3 bucket, with CloudFront controlling access to that bucket.
CloudFormation defines the resources and settings as a stack, allowing the infrastructure to be deployed together and customized through its template. AWS says the solution’s resources are created from CDK constructs; the CloudFormation stack is the deployment and configuration layer, not a substitute for understanding the video pipeline.

The template can be customized to suit a deployment, but changing resources can also mean taking responsibility for validating the resulting media flow, access controls, and operational behavior.
Documented encoding profiles
The deployment guide documents progressive encoding profiles at 30 frames per second. These are configuration choices in the solution, not a promise that every source or viewer will achieve a particular playback quality.

Deploying the AWS solution
- Check service and Region availability. The solution launches in
us-east-1by default. Choose a Region where the required media services are available; AWS specifically notes that MediaLive, MediaPackage, and MediaConnect are offered only in specific Regions. Check the current AWS regional service list before deployment. - Review the solution and its inputs. Read the solution overview and deployment guide, then confirm that the proposed services and documented encoding profile match the source and playback requirements.
- Deploy the CloudFormation stack. Follow the deployment guide’s current stack procedure and select the intended Region and configuration. AWS gives an approximate deployment time of 20 minutes; this is an estimate for deploying the solution, not an ongoing service or stream-start guarantee.
- Inspect the provisioned resources and test playback. Confirm that the stack created the expected MediaLive, MediaPackage, CloudFront, Lambda, and S3 resources. Use the preview player and verify the end-to-end path, including that authorized playback succeeds and access to the origin behaves as intended.
- Customize deliberately. If you modify the template, re-check dependencies, permissions, origin authorization, outputs, and player behavior. Treat a changed stack as a changed streaming system that needs validation, not simply as a successful infrastructure deployment.
Choosing between MediaPackage and S3-backed designs
AWS also documents a separate S3-backed live-streaming architecture. It stores MediaLive’s encoded HLS segments in S3 and uses CloudFront with S3 as the origin, rather than using MediaPackage as the origin stage. Its documented service list includes CloudWatch monitoring, IAM permissions, Systems Manager monitoring and cost visualization, and optional AWS Elemental Link hardware for connecting an on-premises video source.

Choose by the actual requirements: ingest protocol and redundancy, transcoding and bitrate profiles, required output formats and player support, origin or segment-storage design, playback latency, delivery, authorization, service availability in the target Region, and operating cost. The cited architecture pages describe the designs but do not establish a complete Region-by-Region availability matrix or current costs, so those need separate validation against AWS’s current service and pricing information before a production decision.

When Amazon IVS is a different fit
For a managed interactive live-video workflow, CloudFormation provides the AWS::IVS::Channel and AWS::IVS::StreamKey resource types. A channel resource does not itself create a stream key: declare the separate stream-key resource if the stack must provision one. See AWS’s references for AWS::IVS::Channel and AWS::IVS::StreamKey. IVS is an alternative service path, not another name for the MediaLive–MediaPackage reference architecture.
Operational checks before going live
- Source and redundancy: establish how the production feeds reach MediaLive and how failover should work if a feed is interrupted.
- Renditions: select an encoding profile appropriate to the source and viewer devices; the listed profiles are 30 fps, and a profile name alone does not guarantee source quality.
- Playback compatibility: verify the required format and player against the available HLS, DASH, or CMAF endpoints in the MediaPackage design.
- Origin security: preserve the intended CloudFront-to-origin authorization and protect the CDN identifier stored in Secrets Manager.
- Region and cost: verify all required services are offered in the target Region and estimate ongoing costs from current AWS pricing. The solution’s deployment estimate is not a cost estimate.
- Validation: test the viewer path and access restrictions after deployment or template changes, rather than treating successful stack creation as proof that the entire stream works.
