Autonomous delivery robots can navigate some routes after dark by combining sensors, positioning, maps, obstacle detection and route planning; some deployments also use remote human supervision. But there is no standard sensor package or universal nighttime operating rule. A San Francisco testing code requires headlights at night, sunrise and sunset, while Hoboken’s 2026 pilot says its robots will be moved off-street overnight. Those examples describe different local policies—not proof that robots perform as well at night as they do in daylight.
How a delivery robot finds its way on a sidewalk
A sidewalk robot must do more than follow a line on a map. It needs a representation of where it is allowed to go, information about its position along that route, and a way to respond when the path is blocked or a person, bicycle, pet or other obstacle is nearby. The city and operator descriptions available for current deployments refer to combinations of sensors, mapping, obstacle detection and route planning. They do not establish that every robot uses the same equipment or behaves identically.

Hoboken’s August 28, 2026 announcement about its Coco and Avride pilot describes lidar, ultrasonic sensors, cameras, GPS positioning and other automated safety systems. Fremont’s page about a proposed DoorDash Dot deployment identifies lidar, radar and cameras, and says the city would be mapped into a real-time 3D representation to support obstacle detection and route planning. These are examples of particular deployments, not a specification for all sidewalk delivery robots.
What the different parts contribute
- Sensors: The cited deployments identify multiple sensing methods rather than relying on a single device. Their descriptions explain intended functions, but do not publish controlled nighttime comparisons or guaranteed detection ranges.
- Positioning and maps: GPS and mapped routes can help a robot determine where it is and which paths are available. Fremont’s description refers to a real-time 3D representation and route planning; it does not establish that this approach is used by every fleet.
- Obstacle response: A robot may detect an obstruction and slow, stop or choose another route, depending on its system and operating rules. Hoboken says its pilot robots will yield to sidewalk users and slow, stop or reroute as needed.
- Human support: Remote monitoring or intervention may be part of a deployment’s operating model. The details differ by program, and “remote supervision” should not be taken to mean that one operator directly steers every robot at every moment.
Serve Robotics also described lidar, ultrasonics and cameras as multiple navigation modalities in a January 13, 2022 company announcement. That is a company description of its own system, not an independent evaluation of how well those sensors work in darkness.

What changes after dark
Darkness matters because sensing, visibility and interaction are not the same question. Sensors and mapping support a robot’s perception and route choices; lights and audible warnings can help nearby people notice the device. Local operating rules may add requirements for lighting, warning sounds, speed, yielding or where and when robots may travel. The source descriptions establish these kinds of design and policy measures, but they do not provide a controlled test showing how accurately a particular system detects pedestrians at night.
It is therefore too broad to answer “Do delivery robots have headlights?” with a single yes or no. San Francisco’s testing provision requires headlights in its defined testing context, whereas the cited Hoboken pilot’s announcement focuses on pilot operating hours and moving robots off-street overnight. Equipment and rules depend on the robot, its deployment and the jurisdiction.
San Francisco: a lighting requirement for testing
Section 794 of the San Francisco Public Works Code, titled “Autonomous Delivery Devices on Sidewalks – Permit Required,” sets requirements for testing under that local code. It requires headlights operating at night, sunrise and sunset, a warning noise sufficient to alert nearby pedestrians and bicyclists, and yielding to pedestrians and bicycles. It also limits testing speed to no more than 3 mph. These are local testing provisions; they should not be presented as a nationwide standard or assumed to govern every commercial operation.

Hoboken: a pilot that removes robots overnight
Hoboken’s August 2026 pilot announcement says the program begins with 20 robots: 10 from Coco and 10 from Avride. The city describes a maximum speed of 6 mph and an average operating speed of approximately 2 mph. It says the robots will yield to sidewalk users, slow, stop or reroute as needed, and be moved off-street overnight. The pilot is limited to designated zones and includes no-go areas. The speed figures are stated operating parameters, not measured nighttime performance results.
The difference between these examples is important: one cited rule specifies headlights for testing, while the other cited pilot plans not to keep its robots on-street overnight. Neither example establishes what another city requires or what an operator does outside the described program.
When a remote operator can help
Autonomy does not necessarily mean there is no human involvement. Hoboken says its Coco robots will operate under continuous remote supervision, with trained operators able to intervene when necessary. Fremont’s description of DoorDash Dot likewise says trained operators remotely monitor the robot and can intervene. Those statements describe the two deployments; they do not establish identical supervision arrangements across fleets, or that a remote operator can see every situation as clearly as someone standing nearby.

A 2024 Urban Robotics Foundation discussion of the Knight pilot, updated in 2025, describes limited situational awareness and operator line of sight as constraints on some Detroit intersection crossings. This is a narrow example of how an operating domain can be restricted by what a robot or its operators can perceive. It is a secondary account, not a study of nighttime navigation or a measure of night-specific safety.

Remote support can be relevant when a robot encounters a situation it cannot resolve on its own, but the existence of monitoring does not remove the need for clear routes, safe behavior and local operating limits. When comparing programs, look for the stated level of monitoring, what intervention means in practice, and whether the deployment identifies limits on where robots can go.
What evidence says about nighttime safety
Municipal pages and operator announcements are useful for understanding intended equipment, rules and operating plans. They are not the same as independent performance tests. The available evidence here does not establish comparative after-dark detection accuracy, crash rates, stopping distance or safety by lighting condition. A list of sensors, a speed limit, or a promise to yield should not be converted into a claim that a robot has been proven safe in darkness.

Other studies and pilots offer context about sidewalk integration, but not a night-versus-day verdict. The Knight Foundation’s 2022 account of a Kiwibot pilot across Pittsburgh, Miami-Dade County, Detroit and San José describes an effort to learn about use cases and challenges. A 2022 academic paper examined pedestrian interactions during a delivery-robot pilot in Pittsburgh. A U.S. Department of Transportation report, published approximately in 2022, describes an early real-world investigation of interactions with pedestrians and bicyclists. These sources can inform questions about sharing sidewalks; the descriptions available do not establish after-dark detection accuracy or comparative safety outcomes.
For a useful comparison, separate what the system is said to do from what has been measured in the field. A vendor or city description can identify sensors and planned behavior. A pilot report can explain where and how a trial operated. A night-specific performance claim requires evidence that actually measures outcomes under nighttime conditions.
How to assess a robot operating near you
If you are trying to understand whether a delivery robot may operate after dark in your area, the most useful evidence is specific to the jurisdiction and the particular program. A general statement that robots use cameras or lidar does not tell you whether a given route is permitted at night or what happens when a path is blocked.
Best Value
- Find the local rule or permit context. Check whether the source concerns testing, a limited pilot or routine commercial service. A local testing provision, such as San Francisco Section 794, should not be mistaken for a national rule.
- Check hours and route boundaries. Look for operating hours, designated areas, no-go zones and any stated overnight removal. Hoboken’s 2026 announcement, for example, describes designated zones, no-go areas and off-street removal overnight.
- Identify the stated equipment and its source. Note whether the description comes from a municipality, an operator or an independent assessment. Treat sensor lists as design descriptions unless a source also reports measured performance.
- Read the behavior and speed provisions together. Look for limits, yielding rules and stated responses such as slowing, stopping or rerouting. Keep each figure tied to its location and context: San Francisco’s cited testing limit is 3 mph, while Hoboken’s pilot announcement gives a 6 mph maximum and approximately 2 mph average.
- Look for the supervision model and its limits. Determine whether remote monitoring is stated, whether operators can intervene, and whether any source identifies constraints on operator awareness or line of sight.
- Ask whether the evidence is actually about darkness. A pilot study of pedestrian interactions or a sensor description can be relevant context without answering how performance changes at night.
Why policies and equipment do not establish performance
A headlight requirement tells you what a particular rule requires in its scope; it does not prove that a robot can detect every pedestrian. A multi-sensor design description tells you what technologies an operator says it uses; it does not establish a minimum visibility range or error rate. A low speed may be part of an operating limit, but it is not, by itself, a night-specific safety result.
That distinction helps make sense of seemingly conflicting deployments. A city may permit a defined test with lighting requirements and a speed cap, while another pilot may limit where robots operate and remove them overnight. These approaches reflect different local operating choices. Neither can be generalized to every sidewalk robot, and neither substitutes for outcome data collected under comparable lighting conditions.
