Generative AI can help attackers write phishing emails that sound fluent, adapt to a target, and appear in different languages—often with less time and effort than writing each message manually. That makes polished grammar a poor test of whether an email is genuine. The safer approach is to judge what the message asks you to do, then verify the sender and request through a contact method you find independently.
Why AI changes the phishing-email problem
Phishing relies on persuading someone to take an action that benefits the attacker: for example, sharing credentials or sensitive information, or sending money. Generative AI can help create believable text at greater speed and scale, and can reduce the errors that once made some fraudulent messages easier to recognize. The FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) warned on December 3, 2024, that criminals use generative AI to make fraud schemes more believable and operate on a larger scale. Its advisory says AI-generated text can support social engineering, spear phishing, and financial fraud. FBI IC3 advisory, December 3, 2024.

The important change is not that AI makes every phishing email sophisticated or impossible to detect. It gives attackers another way to produce and adapt persuasive messages. A message can still be fraudulent if it contains perfect spelling, and a clumsy message can still be dangerous. Readers should focus on the identity behind a request and the consequences of acting on it, rather than treating writing quality as proof.
How attackers use generative AI in email scams
Producing fluent text quickly
The FBI explains that generative AI synthesizes new content from examples supplied by a user. In a fraud context, this can reduce the time and effort needed to create deceptive messages. AI tools can also correct human errors that might otherwise serve as warning signs. As a result, an email with natural-sounding sentences and clean spelling is no longer strong evidence that its supposed sender is authentic. FBI IC3 advisory, December 3, 2024.

Speed matters because an attacker does not need every message to succeed for a campaign to be worthwhile. The FBI says AI can help criminals generate messages faster and reach a wider audience with believable content. Faster drafting and translation can reduce effort per message, while a targeted lure can be adapted to a particular recipient. These are capabilities the FBI warns about—not evidence that every campaign uses AI or that all generated messages perform equally well.
Adapting a lure to its recipient
Attackers can use generated text to make a message feel more relevant to a particular person or situation. The FBI identifies spear phishing—targeted rather than broadly addressed phishing—as one use of AI-generated text. Microsoft’s Digital Defense Report 2025 likewise says AI enables more targeted phishing and better lures. Personal details or a plausible context may make a message feel familiar, but they do not authenticate the person or organization making the request. Microsoft Digital Defense Report 2025.
That distinction is useful when an email appears to know something about you or your work. Context can make a lure more persuasive, but it is not the same as proof of identity. A familiar name, role, or situation does not make a request for money, credentials, or sensitive information safe to follow. Verify the request separately, especially when acting on it would have significant consequences.

The FBI says criminals can use AI to translate text and limit grammatical or spelling errors. It also warns that AI can help criminals generate messages faster and reach a wider audience with believable content. Translation and polished wording may remove clues that some readers have relied on, while faster production can make it easier to send deceptive messages at scale. Neither fact establishes how common AI-written phishing is: the cited sources do not provide an independently verified, cross-industry prevalence rate. FBI IC3 advisory, December 3, 2024.
Using email as one part of a broader fraud attempt
AI’s role in fraud is not limited to email text. The FBI advisory also discusses synthetic images, audio, and video used in fraud and impersonation; those are broader uses of generative AI, not proof that a particular email includes fabricated media. Microsoft describes email bombing as a possible precursor to social engineering, including follow-up voice phishing (vishing) or impersonation in Teams. That is a reported multi-stage attack pattern, not an inevitable next step after every AI-written email. FBI IC3 advisory, December 3, 2024; Microsoft Digital Defense Report 2025.

This wider context is a reason to verify through a separate route if a suspicious email is followed by a call or workplace chat asking you to act. It does not mean that every email bombing incident, call, or Teams message is part of one attack. The useful principle is narrower: an additional message in another channel does not, by itself, confirm the original sender’s identity or make the request legitimate.
What the reported click-through figures do—and do not—show
Microsoft’s Digital Defense Report 2025 reports that “AI-automated phishing emails achieved 54% click-through rates compared to 12% for standard attempts—a 4.5x increase.” Those figures are Microsoft’s reported comparison, not a universal rate for phishing campaigns and not proof that AI alone caused the difference. They should be read as a result reported in that report’s context, not as a prediction of what will happen to every recipient or organization. Microsoft Digital Defense Report 2025.

The comparison is evidence of a reported difference between the AI-automated and standard attempts in Microsoft’s account, not a measure of the share of all phishing emails that are AI-generated. It also does not show that any individual email is more likely to be fraudulent because it reads smoothly. Avoid applying the percentages to a different organization, campaign, or person as though they were a guaranteed outcome.
The same report says AI automation could increase phishing profitability by up to 50 times. This is Microsoft’s stated potential, not an observed average return or a measured outcome for all attackers. The report’s click-through comparison and profitability estimate are different kinds of claims: one is a reported comparison, while the other describes potential economics. Neither establishes how frequently AI is used in phishing overall. Microsoft Digital Defense Report 2025.
How to assess a suspicious message when the writing looks convincing
Start with the request, not the prose
Ask what the sender wants you to do and what happens if you comply. A polished email can still ask for credentials, sensitive information, money, gift cards, cryptocurrency, or other assets. The FBI specifically cautions against sharing sensitive information with people known only online or by phone, and against sending money or other assets to people in those circumstances. Treat urgency, a familiar tone, or personal details as reasons to check carefully—not as proof of identity. FBI IC3 advisory, December 3, 2024.

Consider the action separately from the wording. If the request involves payment, account access, or sensitive details, the key question is not whether the email sounds professional; it is whether you can establish who is asking and confirm the request without relying on the message itself. A convincing explanation does not remove the need for that independent check.

Verify through a channel you obtain independently
If an unexpected message asks for payment, credentials, or sensitive information, do not use the reply address or contact details in that message to confirm it. Find the purported organization’s contact information independently and contact it directly; the FBI advises researching those details and calling the organization. For a workplace request, use a known, established route to reach the relevant colleague or department rather than relying on the message’s own instructions. If you cannot verify the request, do not proceed with the sensitive action.
Independent verification means starting outside the message: use contact information you already trust or locate separately, then ask whether the sender and the particular request are genuine. This matters because a message can include persuasive details and still make a false claim about who sent it. A reply to the same email does not provide an independent check; it keeps the confirmation inside the channel whose authenticity is in question.
Report the message through the right route
If you receive a suspicious work email, use your employer’s established reporting channel so the organization can assess it. The FBI’s IC3 advisory addresses financial fraud; it should not be treated as the correct reporting destination for every workplace phishing incident. If a suspected scam involves financial fraud, consult the FBI advisory for its public guidance and reporting context. FBI IC3 advisory, December 3, 2024.
Reporting is separate from deciding whether to comply. If you are unsure, do not make a payment or provide sensitive information while waiting for confirmation. At work, follow the organization’s normal route for raising the concern rather than improvising a new reporting destination.

Account protections that reduce the impact of phishing
Use phishing-resistant MFA where available
Multifactor authentication (MFA) adds an account-verification step beyond a password. Microsoft recommends enforcing phishing-resistant MFA to protect against unauthorized access when attackers have compromised credentials. The report says MFA blocks access in over 99% of cases when attackers possess valid usernames and passwords. That is a Microsoft-reported figure within the report’s stated context, not a guarantee against every phishing or social-engineering outcome. MFA does not establish whether a payment request is legitimate, for example, so account security and independent verification serve different purposes. Microsoft Digital Defense Report 2025.
For an individual, the practical question is whether the account and device support a phishing-resistant MFA option. For an organization, Microsoft’s recommendation is to enforce that protection. The report supports phishing-resistant MFA as a defensive control, but it does not compare particular products or name a specific security key, price, or compatibility list. Check the account provider’s support information before choosing or relying on a method.
Organizations should treat authentication as one layer
For organizations, Microsoft recommends enforcing phishing-resistant MFA and also recommends awareness training for social-engineering tactics. These controls address different parts of the problem: training can help people evaluate deceptive requests, while stronger authentication can make compromised credentials less useful for gaining account access. An organization still needs a clear process for reporting suspicious messages, since a user who spots a concern needs a reliable way to alert the team responsible for investigating it. Microsoft Digital Defense Report 2025.
No single layer answers every question. Authentication can help protect access to an account when credentials have been compromised; it does not verify an unexpected payment instruction. Awareness can help a person recognize social-engineering pressure; it cannot guarantee that every deceptive message will be noticed. Independent confirmation, organization reporting procedures, and account protections address distinct risks and work best as complementary measures.
What a reader should take away
AI can make phishing messages faster to produce, more fluent, easier to translate, and more targeted. Those capabilities weaken the usefulness of spelling and tone as authenticity checks, but they do not make every message convincing or remove the need to verify claims. When a message asks for a consequential action, use contact information found independently, follow your organization’s reporting process for workplace email, and protect accounts with phishing-resistant MFA where it is supported. The central test is not whether the email sounds human; it is whether the sender and request can be verified outside the email itself.

Frequently Asked Questions
How can you tell if a phishing email was written by AI?
Polished grammar is not a dependable way to tell whether a message is genuine or AI-written. The FBI says AI tools can correct errors and translate messages, removing clues that once helped some readers spot fraud. Focus instead on what the email asks you to do and independently verify the sender and request.
Are AI phishing emails harder to spot?
They can be harder to assess by writing quality alone because generative AI can produce fluent text, translate it, and help tailor lures. That does not make every AI-assisted message sophisticated or impossible to detect. Treat a polished tone or personal details as insufficient proof of identity, and verify consequential requests through a separate contact method.
Does the 54% click-through figure mean most phishing emails use AI?
No. Microsoft’s 2025 Digital Defense Report gives a comparison of 54% click-through for AI-automated phishing emails versus 12% for standard attempts, described as a 4.5x increase. Those are report-specific figures, not a measure of AI phishing prevalence or a universal prediction for every campaign.
What should I do if a convincing email asks for money or sensitive information?
Do not rely on the contact details in the message to confirm the request. Find the purported organization’s contact information independently and contact it directly; the FBI advises researching those details and calling. The FBI also cautions against sharing sensitive information or sending money and other assets to people known only online or by phone.
Does MFA stop phishing?
Microsoft recommends phishing-resistant MFA to help prevent unauthorized account access when attackers have compromised credentials. Its 2025 report says MFA blocks access in over 99% of cases in that context, but this is not a guarantee against every phishing or social-engineering outcome. MFA also does not confirm that a payment request is legitimate.
The Bottom Line
AI can make phishing emails more fluent, targeted, translated, and faster to produce, so good grammar is no longer a reliable sign of legitimacy. Check the request, verify the sender through contact information obtained independently, report workplace messages through your organization’s channel, and use phishing-resistant MFA where supported.
