An atmospheric water generator (AWG) draws water vapor from ambient air and collects it as liquid—usually by cooling air until moisture condenses on a coil. That collected water is not automatically safe to drink: treatment and hygienic storage are essential. How much an AWG produces, and how much energy it uses, depends heavily on local temperature and humidity.
How does an atmospheric water generator work?
Most condenser-style AWGs work on the same basic principle as a dehumidifier. A fan pulls air across a cooled surface; when the air is cooled enough, water vapor condenses into droplets. The droplets run into a collection system, then pass through treatment and into storage. The U.S. EPA describes this cooling-coil approach in its 2019 technical brief.

Other ways to capture vapor
Not every AWG uses a refrigeration coil. Desiccant systems use a material that absorbs moisture from air, then release that vapor through heating or another process so it can be condensed and collected. Some systems use membrane gas separation. The U.S. Department of Energy outlines these approaches in its alternative water sources guidance. Whatever the capture method, the basic result is a stream of collected water that still needs appropriate treatment and clean storage; the UNFCCC technology brief also describes downstream treatment and storage.
How much water can an AWG produce?
Yield varies with the amount of water vapor in the air and its temperature. As the EPA puts it, “Water production rates are highly dependent upon the air temperature and the amount of water vapor (i.e., humidity) in the air.” Its 2019 technical brief reports these broad system-scale ranges:
#1 Best Overall
- ✅ [Revolution] - Game-changing revolution in drinking water industry! Brings you the purest water by extracting moisture from the air and purifying the water with built-in air and water filtration system. No plumbing or piped water is needed. Just plug into a power outlet! No installation is needed.
- ✅ [Purifying] - With built-in air and water filtration system such as PAC treatment, Ultrafiltration, carbon block filter system, and UVC-LED sterilization system, etc., it produces drinking water that tastes fresh, pure, and soft.
- ✅ [Production Volume] - The produced water volume depends on the level of humidity in the air and the ambient temperature. Work best in areas with relative humidity levels ABOVE 40% and environmental temperature ABOVE 59°F (15°C). The maximum production volume is 2.64 Gallon (10L) each day (with the temperature of 86°F and humidity of 80%).
- ✅ [Healthy] - Free from contaminants like heavy metal, pesticides, and other impurities found in ground or surface water. Say goodbye to chlorine and chemicals from urban water supply system. The water tank is made of Food-grade PP (Polypropylene). Say goodbye to plastic bottles and reduce your carbon footprint. Help reduce the humidity level in the room.
- ✅ [Easy and Convenient] - Can also be connected to solar pannels (paired with a power station or battery bank), makes it a perfect water source for homes, RVs, trailers, boats, off-grid or emergencies during natural disasters.
| System scale | EPA-reported output | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Household | 1–20 liters per day | Range reported by the U.S. EPA in 2019; not a guarantee for a particular model or location. |
| Commercial | 1,000 to over 10,000 liters per day | Range reported by the U.S. EPA in 2019; output depends on system and operating conditions. |
The brief also cites nearly 600 liters per day for a Watergen GEN-350 under optimal temperature and humidity conditions. That is an optimal-condition capacity claim, not a typical yield for all climates or a promise of daily output. The EPA’s figures are useful for understanding differences in scale, but they do not substitute for performance data at the temperature and humidity expected at a specific site.
Why do climate and energy use matter?
Air with more moisture generally offers more water to capture. Temperature also affects how efficiently a system can extract it. The Department of Energy notes that colder, humid environments can require more energy than warmer, humid conditions. Fans and refrigeration add electrical demand, so an AWG should not be assumed to be an effortless or universally efficient water source—particularly in dry or cold locations.

- MAKE PURE DRINKING WATER FROM AIR The Aqua Vitale A20L atmospheric water generator produces up to 20 liters (5.3 gallons) of fresh drinking water per day directly from ambient air. No plumbing, no water lines, and no bottled water deliveries required.
- Equipped with advanced multi-stage purification including sediment filtration, activated carbon, reverse osmosis polishing, mineral enhancement, and UV sterilization to ensure clean, fresh-tasting water in every glass.
- PREMIUM EUROPEAN DESIGN Engineered to complement luxury kitchens, offices, yachts, and modern interiors. The A20L combines high performance with elegant aesthetics — a true appliance, not an industrial machine.
- ELIMINATE BOTTLED WATER FOREVER Stop lifting heavy bottles and scheduling deliveries. Enjoy on-demand drinking water generated inside your home or workplace — ideal for families, offices, gyms, and wellness-focused environments.
- ENERGY-EFFICIENT WITH EASY MAINTENANCE Designed for reliable daily use with user-friendly controls, washable air filtration, and scheduled filter replacement intervals. Built for long-term performance and dependable hydration.
When evaluating expected performance, look for yield and electricity use measured under conditions resembling the intended location and season. A best-case capacity figure alone does not establish how much water a system will deliver year-round or the energy required per liter.
Can you drink water made from air?
Not simply because it has condensed. Airborne volatile organic compounds can dissolve into condensate, and plumbing or stored water can support microbial growth. The EPA says condensate should receive adequate treatment before potable use in its 2019 technical brief.

The EPA’s 2018 microbial water-quality evaluation examined one commercial Watergen GEN-350 system. A later EPA brief summarized three months of continuous-operation research: Legionella and Mycobacteria were not detected in weekly samples, while high heterotrophic plate count results occurred in both treated and untreated water. The brief said water from that evaluated system was microbiologically safe for human consumption and noted a further disinfection unit intended for long-term preservation. These findings describe that system and study context; they do not establish that every AWG produces safe drinking water.
For any system intended to supply drinking water, check which treatment stages are included, how they are maintained, how the tank and plumbing are cleaned, and what evidence supports potable use. Clean collection and storage are part of water safety, not optional details after condensation.

What should you compare before choosing a system?
- Local conditions: Consider temperature and humidity across seasons, not just an unusually humid day.
- Useful output: Seek expected daily yield at conditions close to the intended location, rather than relying on an optimal-condition headline.
- Energy use: Compare electricity consumed per volume under comparable conditions.
- Capture method: Identify whether the unit uses cooling-coil condensation, desiccant capture, or another approach.
- Treatment and storage: Check treatment stages, maintenance requirements, tank hygiene, and evidence for drinking-water suitability.
- Scale and service: Match household or commercial capacity to actual need, and consider installation, replacement parts, and service support.
The cited EPA and DOE material explains the technology and broad performance considerations, but does not provide a current model-by-model price, efficiency, or retail comparison. Those details need to be checked for the specific system and market.
