AST SpaceMobile aims to let an ordinary, unmodified smartphone connect to a cellular network through a satellite when a ground tower is out of reach. Its BlueBird satellites use large steerable antennas to create cellular coverage areas from orbit, while mobile-network operator partners provide spectrum and connect the satellite layer to their networks. The design has been demonstrated in tests, but AST’s Form 10-Q for the quarter ended June 30, 2026, said its SpaceMobile Service had not launched.
How can a satellite connect directly to a normal phone?
The phone sends and receives cellular radio signals much as it does when connecting to a terrestrial cell site. The difference is that, in an area without tower coverage, the radio path reaches a BlueBird satellite instead. The satellite’s large phased-array antenna forms and steers a beam toward an area on the ground, creating a coverage cell for compatible carrier service.

AST says the intended user device is an existing, everyday smartphone: no separate satellite handset, dish, special app, or software update is required for access. That is the company’s design description, not a guarantee that every phone, carrier plan, location, or situation will be supported when service becomes available.
A useful analogy is a cell site in orbit. It is only an analogy: a satellite moves, its radio link and available capacity differ from a ground tower, and coverage depends on spectrum rights, network integration, and deployment. The system is intended to supplement a mobile operator’s terrestrial network, not replace it.

What happens between the phone and the carrier network?
- The phone transmits. A standard smartphone communicates over cellular spectrum allocated for the service in that market.
- The satellite forms a beam. A BlueBird’s phased array electronically steers radio beams toward coverage areas on Earth. Those beams act as satellite-provided cellular access points.
- The satellite processes the signal. AST identifies its AST5000 application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) as a component for next-generation satellites, supporting real-time signal processing and beam steering, according to the company.
- The connection joins the operator’s network. AST says its system integrates with mobile-network operator (MNO) networks. The operator’s spectrum and network help carry the service; the intended handoff between ground towers and satellite coverage is designed to be seamless.
AST says the system combines partner operators’ licensed frequencies with its own spectrum holdings. Which frequencies can be used, and under what permissions, depends on the country and deployment. In general, lower-frequency bands tend to travel farther and penetrate obstacles better, while higher-frequency bands can support more capacity; neither characteristic alone establishes the coverage or speed a customer will receive.
How does it differ from towers and satellite phones?
| Connection type | Device | How the link is provided | Coverage and availability |
|---|---|---|---|
| Terrestrial cellular | Ordinary cellular phone | The phone connects to a ground cell site over the operator’s network. | Depends on tower coverage and the operator’s service. |
| AST direct-to-cell design | Intended to use an ordinary, unmodified smartphone | A BlueBird satellite supplies the cellular radio link; AST says the service integrates with mobile operators and their networks. | Intended to extend a partner network beyond tower coverage. Commercial status is described below. |
| Conventional satellite phone or terminal | Dedicated satellite handset or other purpose-built equipment, depending on the system | The dedicated device communicates with a satellite network. | Not the same architecture as AST’s stated goal of connecting a standard phone directly. |
AST’s description is not a claim that satellite service will work in every location or provide continuous coverage. A satellite beam, the operator relationship, spectrum permissions, and system capacity all matter. Nor does a successful test establish that AST will outperform terrestrial cellular or conventional satellite systems in a particular place.
What do the antenna and performance figures mean?
The phased array is central to the concept: its size and beamforming are intended to let a satellite direct cellular signals to coverage areas on the ground. The following figures are AST-reported; stated design capabilities should not be read as measured customer performance.

| Figure | What it describes | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| 693 square feet | Phased-array area of BlueBirds 1–5 | AST company network description, accessed in 2026. |
| Approximately 2,400 square feet | Approximate maximum phased-array area for Block 2 | AST’s Form 10-Q for the quarter ended June 30, 2026; the filing describes it as more than three times the Block 1 array. |
| 98.9 Mbps | Peak data speed directly to a standard, unmodified smartphone | AST-reported Block 1 BlueBird test result in the same Form 10-Q. It is a peak test result, not a promised subscriber speed. |
| Over 150 Mbps per coverage cell; more than 2,000 cells | Next-generation performance and coverage-cell capabilities | AST-stated capabilities on company technical and product pages, accessed in 2026; they are distinct from the 98.9 Mbps Block 1 test. |
| Up to 10 GHz of processing bandwidth | Block 2 processing-bandwidth capability | AST product-page claim, accessed in 2026. Processing bandwidth is not the same as end-user throughput. |
AST attributes Block 2 capacity gains to the larger antenna aperture, precision beamforming, and the AST5000 chip. Its Form 10-Q says the array is designed to make narrower, more focused coverage areas, reduce interference, and maximize capacity. These are company descriptions of the system and its design; they do not establish typical service speeds or performance in a particular location.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What has AST demonstrated so far?
AST and its partners report tests using ordinary smartphones with BlueWalker 3 and BlueBird satellites. Company-listed milestones include a voice call in April 2023, a video call in June 2023, a 5G call in September 2023, and tests with AT&T and Verizon in the United States in 2025. In July 2025, AST reported a VoLTE call and SMS using AT&T spectrum and core network; in October 2025, it reported calls, data, and video streaming with Bell in Canada. The company’s Form 10-Q also reports the 98.9 Mbps Block 1 peak test.
These demonstrations show that the satellite-to-phone approach has been tested for voice, video, messaging, and data. A test does not establish regular commercial availability, continuous coverage, or a particular quality of service for customers. AST’s partner materials also name Vodafone in Europe, Rakuten in Japan, and stc in Saudi Arabia and regional markets; a partnership announcement or demonstration should not be mistaken for a consumer launch in each market.

Is AST SpaceMobile available to customers now?
AST’s Form 10-Q for the quarter ended June 30, 2026, stated: “The SpaceMobile Service has not been launched and therefore has not yet generated any revenue.” The company’s second-quarter update described preparation for beta service in 2026, including scaled noncommercial use with strategic operator partners. AST’s FAQ describes an initial U.S. beta target with noncontinuous nationwide coverage. Those statements describe plans and preparation, not a generally available retail service.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIn the same filing, AST reported that BlueBird 6 launched in December 2025, BlueBirds 8–10 launched in June 2026, and BlueBirds 11–13 launched on August 5, 2026. It also reported that BlueBird 7 entered an orbit too low to sustain operation and was de-orbited. Launching satellites is a deployment milestone; it does not by itself mean a carrier has opened service to subscribers.
Authorization is also market-specific. AST has received or sought regulatory authorizations at different stages, but service requires the relevant country’s rules, spectrum rights, and carrier agreements. Do not assume that a partnership or authorization in one market permits service everywhere.
Who provides the plan and decides where it works?
AST describes its service as integrated with mobile operators rather than as a separate satellite-phone plan sold directly by AST. Its materials say carrier partners determine consumer plans and pricing. The reviewed company materials do not establish a current consumer price or a signup route, so availability and terms need to come from the relevant carrier when it offers service.
