A readable record deal should make clear what rights an artist keeps or grants, how long any license lasts, which expenses can be recouped, and how royalties are calculated and reported. That is the case made by broke Records co-founder and CEO Andre Benz in a TechBullion article published October 3, 2026—not independent proof that the label’s own agreements or accounting follow those principles.
What does “readable” mean in this argument?
TechBullion’s Victor Miller reports that broke Records was founded in 2023 by Benz and co-founder and COO Brandon De Oliveira. The article presents the label’s position as a challenge to agreements artists may find difficult to understand: an artist should be able to identify what is being signed away, how money flows, and what the label must report.

Benz frames the ownership question this way: “The artist should own their product or know exactly the terms under which they do not.” He also says, “The math should be readable by a human being without a law degree.” These are positions attributed to Benz by TechBullion, not findings from a review of contract documents. Readability is therefore a standard to ask about, not a verified description of every broke Records deal or of record contracts generally.

Which terms should an artist be able to follow?
The article’s concerns can be turned into practical questions for comparing offers. They are a way to clarify a conversation with a label or lawyer, not a standard contract checklist or legal advice.

Rights and license term
- Which recordings, compositions, artwork, or other assets does the agreement cover?
- Does the artist transfer ownership, grant an exclusive license, or grant another kind of right?
- How long does the grant last, where does it apply, and what happens when it expires or the agreement ends?
- Are any publishing or other rights covered separately from the sound-recording deal?
Benz’s stated principle is that an artist should own the product or know precisely the terms on which they do not. The article does not provide a broke Records contract showing how those distinctions are handled in practice.
Recoupment and accounting
- Which costs may be recouped from the artist’s earnings, and which party pays them if they are not recouped?
- Are costs itemized so the artist can see the amount, category, and how each affects the account?
- How are receipts, deductions, and the remaining balance shown in royalty statements?
A deal’s headline split does not by itself answer what money is deducted before an artist receives a share. Benz’s emphasis on comprehensible math makes the underlying calculation and the statement showing it central issues.

Royalty calculation and reporting
- What revenue is included in the royalty base, and what deductions or exclusions apply?
- How is the artist’s share calculated, and how do recoupable balances affect payment?
- How often are statements issued, what period does each cover, and how can an artist query an apparent error?
Benz says, “The songwriter should see the statements, understand the statements, and get paid without chasing.” TechBullion attributes this statement to him; the article does not independently establish the label’s reporting schedule or payment record.
What does the article say about broke Records?
The article describes broke Records as an independent label and music marketing company operating under Create Music Group, with offices in Los Angeles, New York, and London, and says it works across hip-hop, pop, electronic, and country. It also says the company has a publishing arm, broke Publishing, which was run at launch by Brennen Bryant, previously of Avex USA Publishing. The official company page retrieved for this reporting contained minimal text, so these details are attributable to TechBullion rather than independently substantiated here.

What history and rationale does Benz offer?
Benz says that his earlier imprint Lowly used fifty-fifty profit splits, short-term licenses, and plain language. That is his account of Lowly’s deals, not an independently reviewed sample. He presents readable terms and timely, understandable royalty statements as principles for artist relationships.

De Oliveira asks, “Why are we being judged for being transparent?” TechBullion reports that he described agreements as optimized for “the artist being able to read them.” Those remarks express the company’s rationale; they do not establish that readable wording alone makes a deal favorable. Artists still need to assess the rights granted, the financial formula, the term, and the obligations on both sides.
