The Dow is a price-weighted index of 30 selected large U.S. companies; the Nasdaq Composite covers stocks listed on the Nasdaq Stock Market and is weighted by market capitalization. As a result, a high-priced share can have more influence on the Dow, while a larger company generally has more influence on the Nasdaq Composite. The Composite has a technology emphasis, but it is not a technology-only index.
How the Dow and Nasdaq Composite differ
| Feature | Dow Jones Industrial Average | Nasdaq Composite |
|---|---|---|
| What it tracks | 30 selected large U.S. companies | Stocks listed on the Nasdaq Stock Market, spanning companies of different sizes and sectors |
| Weighting | Price-weighted: a component’s share price affects its influence | Market-capitalization-weighted: a company’s market value affects its influence |
| Selection | Chosen by a committee using qualitative considerations; there is no strict mechanical ranking rule | Based on the Nasdaq-listed stock universe, rather than a 30-company committee-selected group |
| Sector emphasis | Selected, well-known companies across sectors | Broad Nasdaq-listed coverage with a technology emphasis, alongside financial and other sectors |
The central distinction is what each index measures and how it gives components influence. The Dow is a compact, selected group whose weighting depends on share prices. The Nasdaq Composite is a broader exchange-based index whose weighting depends on company size. Neither construction means that the index is a complete picture of every U.S. stock.

What price weighting and market-cap weighting mean
How a price-weighted index works
The Dow’s components influence the index according to their share prices, not the total market value of the companies. In simplified terms, the Dow’s index level is the sum of its component stock prices divided by a divisor. A stock with a higher per-share price therefore has more weight than a lower-priced stock, even if the lower-priced company is worth more overall.
Recommended Free Tools
For example, suppose two Dow components each rise by 1% over the same period. The higher-priced component will generally contribute a larger point change to the index than the lower-priced one because the same percentage move represents a larger change in dollars per share. The index’s divisor converts the combined price changes into an index level; it is not simply an average of the 30 share prices.

S&P Dow Jones Indices illustrates the effect with Merck and Visa: in its example, Visa’s share price is twice Merck’s, so a move of the same percentage produces twice the weight and impact for Visa in the Dow. That example shows why the Dow’s influence is not a direct measure of the companies’ relative sizes.
How market-cap weighting works
Market capitalization is a company’s share price multiplied by its shares outstanding. In a market-cap-weighted index such as the Nasdaq Composite, a company with a larger market capitalization generally has more influence than a smaller company. If two constituents move by the same percentage, the larger company’s move will typically make a greater contribution to the index.
This weighting connects a company’s influence to its total market value rather than to the price of one share. A share price on its own does not reveal how large a company is: the number of shares outstanding matters too. Consequently, a stock with a relatively low share price can belong to a company with a larger market capitalization than a stock with a much higher price.

Why the distinction matters
Weighting determines which price changes matter most to an index’s movement. The Dow can be disproportionately affected by a large move in a high-priced component. The Nasdaq Composite can be disproportionately affected by a large move in a company that accounts for a substantial share of the index’s market capitalization. A headline that says one index rose or fell does not, by itself, show that every company in its universe moved in the same direction.

What each index includes
The Dow: 30 selected companies
The Dow contains 30 selected large U.S. companies. Its components are not selected by taking the 30 largest companies in a market and applying a fixed ranking formula. Instead, a committee considers factors that include a company’s reputation, sustained growth, investor interest, and whether the index represents different sectors. These are considerations, not a strict checklist that automatically determines membership.
Because the Dow is selective and relatively small, it is best understood as a prominent blue-chip measure, not a broad inventory of the U.S. stock market. A company’s absence does not necessarily mean it is small, unsuccessful, or unimportant; the index’s committee-based construction and limited number of places shape its membership.
The Nasdaq Composite: Nasdaq-listed stocks
The Nasdaq Composite follows stocks listed on the Nasdaq Stock Market across a much broader range of company sizes and sectors. Nasdaq describes it as covering thousands of stocks and more than 3,500 companies; the exact count can change as listings and index constituents change, so it should not be treated as a permanent figure.

Why the names can be misleading
“Industrial” does not mean industrial companies only
The Dow’s name reflects its history, not a current rule that limits it to industrial businesses. Today, the index includes companies from multiple sectors. S&P Dow Jones Indices covers transportation and utilities separately through the Dow Jones Transportation Average and Dow Jones Utility Average; those separate averages are not additional components that turn the Dow into an all-industries index.
Nasdaq Composite is not the Nasdaq-100
The Nasdaq Composite and Nasdaq-100 are separate indexes. The Composite broadly covers Nasdaq-listed stocks, while the Nasdaq-100 has a different, narrower selection universe. Their constituents, weights, movements, and performance can differ. When reading a chart, fund description, or market report, check that it names the Nasdaq Composite rather than substituting data about the Nasdaq-100.
How the Dow is selected and maintained
Committee decisions and reviews
The committee reviews the Dow’s components as needed and can make changes in response to market developments or corporate actions. The methodology does not provide for an annual or semi-annual reconstitution. That means there is no fixed yearly date at which the index automatically replaces companies according to a formula.
Committee selection also means that an explanation of a membership change should be tied to the decision and circumstances at the time. The factors named in the methodology describe what the committee considers; they should not be converted into a guaranteed prediction of which company will enter or leave the index.

The divisor and corporate actions
The Dow’s divisor helps preserve continuity in the index level when a component changes or a corporate action affects a stock’s price. Without an adjustment, a stock split or a constituent replacement could create an apparent jump that reflects the mechanics of the change rather than a market gain or loss. The divisor is adjusted when necessary so the index level remains meaningful across such events.
This is why the Dow is not calculated by adding 30 share prices and dividing by 30. Its divisor is maintained to account for changes that would otherwise disrupt the series. The simplified sum-of-prices-divided-by-divisor formula explains the weighting principle, while the divisor’s adjustments help keep the index continuous.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Brief history of the two indexes
The Dow began calculating a daily average in May 1896, initially tracking 12 industrial stocks; it later expanded to 30. The Nasdaq Composite was established in 1971. These dates describe the indexes’ origins, not the starting point for comparing their modern performance. Over time, the Dow’s components and the Nasdaq-listed universe have changed.

There is no meaningful way to compare two index levels simply by looking at their displayed numbers. Each index has its own calculation base and methodology, so a larger numerical level does not mean that its constituents are collectively more valuable or that it performed better. Compare percentage changes over the same dates instead.
Best Value
Choose the same period and return type
For a useful performance comparison, specify the start and end dates and whether the figures represent price return or total return. Price return reflects changes in index prices. Total return also accounts for dividends being reinvested. The two measures can produce different results, so a comparison should not mix them.
Also check that the figures refer to the exact index names. Nasdaq Composite results are not interchangeable with Nasdaq-100 results, and an index-level comparison is not the same as comparing an investment that tracks an index. Funds may have their own fees, tracking differences, and dividend treatment; the index itself is a measurement, not an investable product.
Interpret movement in light of weighting
If the Dow and Nasdaq Composite move by different amounts over a period, their construction helps explain why. The Dow’s small, selected group and price weighting can make high-priced components particularly influential. The Composite’s broader Nasdaq-listed universe and market-cap weighting place more influence on larger companies. Neither index’s daily movement tells you, on its own, how the typical constituent performed.

Which index answers which question?
- Use the Dow when the question concerns the performance of its 30 selected large U.S. companies or the behavior of a familiar, compact blue-chip benchmark.
- Use the Nasdaq Composite when the question concerns the broader set of stocks listed on the Nasdaq Stock Market, including its technology-heavy but multi-sector mix.
- Check the index name carefully when a source says only “Nasdaq,” because that word can refer to the exchange, the Composite, or the Nasdaq-100.
- Use a matched return series when comparing results: align dates and choose price return or total return for both indexes.
Neither index is inherently “better” for every purpose. They answer different market questions because they cover different universes and weight their constituents differently. The right one depends on whether the subject is a selected set of 30 large companies or the much broader Nasdaq-listed market.
