A computer chip is made by building and patterning layers of materials on a silicon wafer, then cutting the wafer into individual dies and packaging and testing them. The repeated fabrication operations create the chip’s devices and electrical connections; packaging turns each die into a component that can be connected to a larger system.
What does “making a chip” mean?
Chipmaking includes several stages, but the term can refer specifically to front-end manufacturing: fabricating a circuit design on a wafer. The Semiconductor Industry Association defines front-end manufacturing as fabricating a chip’s design onto a raw wafer to yield a die. The later steps—separating dies, assembling them into packages, and testing them—are back-end manufacturing.

- Wafer: a thin, round silicon substrate that holds many repeated chip designs.
- Die: one individual piece of the wafer containing a fabricated circuit.
- Packaged chip: a die, or sometimes multiple dies, mounted and connected within a protective package.
These terms describe different stages, not interchangeable names for the same object: the wafer is processed first, the dies are cut from it, and packaged chips are prepared for use in electronic products.
How does a silicon wafer become a circuit?
1. Prepare the silicon and design
Chip design work produces the circuit blueprint used in manufacturing. The starting platform is a silicon wafer. In Samsung’s overview, silicon is purified, formed into an ingot, sliced into wafers, and polished; oxidation can form a protective layer. Wafer preparation and front-end processing take place in specialized fabrication facilities.

2. Add and pattern material layers
Manufacturers build the circuit through repeated operations that add, modify, or remove material in selected areas. A simplified patterning cycle may involve preparing or depositing a layer, coating the wafer with light-sensitive photoresist, exposing the resist through a patterned mask, developing it, processing exposed regions, removing remaining resist, inspecting the result, and preparing for another cycle. This is a simplified description, not a single fixed recipe: the sequence varies by chip design and manufacturer.
- Deposition and oxidation add or form layers. Thin films and oxide layers can serve as conductors, insulators, semiconductors, or protective barriers.
- Photolithography defines where features go. Light transfers a pattern from a mask into the photoresist. The patterned resist then guides subsequent processing. ASML describes the reticle as the blueprint and its lithography optics as shrinking and focusing the pattern onto the resist.
- Etching removes selected material. Liquids or plasma can remove material in chosen regions, leaving the intended pattern.
- Doping changes electrical properties. Ion implantation or other doping processes introduce selected impurities into particular wafer regions.
- Metallization forms electrical connections. Conductive interconnections link transistors and other circuit elements.
- Planarization and metrology prepare and check layers. Planarization smooths the surface for later processing. Metrology measures features such as thickness and alignment and helps identify defects.
Pattern transfer and inspection have different jobs: lithography defines a pattern; metrology checks whether the resulting layers meet dimensional and alignment requirements.

3. Repeat the process to build the chip
The wafer goes through many fabrication operations as the circuit is built layer by layer. The Semiconductor Industry Association says listed steps can repeat several hundred times; ASML describes modern chips as having up to 100 layers. These are broad descriptions from the organizations, not a universal count that applies to every chip. The materials, equipment, layer count, and process flow depend on the product and manufacturer.

ASML’s overview describes its lithography systems using EUV for the most critical layers and DUV for less critical layers with larger features. That explains the use of those systems in ASML’s account; it does not mean every chip is made with identical equipment or an identical lithography process.

What happens after wafer fabrication?
Dice the wafer into dies
Once fabrication and wafer-level inspection are complete, the wafer is cut into separate dies. Each die contains one circuit design, though not every die necessarily passes inspection or testing.
Package the dies
A die is mounted in a package that provides physical protection and electrical connections to the outside world. A package may also include thermal-management components. Some packages hold more than one die; the arrangement depends on the product.

Test the finished component
Electrical and functional tests check whether the component operates as intended. Intel’s February 19, 2025 explanation says chips undergo electrical, heat, and functional tests before shipment; it also describes burn-in and process-platform validation. The exact backend sequence varies by product and manufacturer.
How long does chipmaking take?
ASML’s undated manufacturing explainer describes the overall process from design to mass production as taking up to four months. This is a broad estimate, not a guaranteed time for every fab cycle or chip. It covers more than the time spent on an individual wafer and should not be read as a universal production schedule.

Can you make a modern chip at home?
Not in the practical sense of producing a modern integrated circuit with ordinary tools. The process described here involves repeated, tightly controlled fabrication operations in specialized facilities, followed by dicing, packaging, and testing. A home project can teach electronics or semiconductor concepts, but it is not a substitute for manufacturing a modern chip.
