How Archaeologists Verify a Site Before Calling It a Biblical Discovery

A biblical-site identification depends on documented context, chronology and historical comparison—not an ancient artifact or a similar-sounding name alone.

Archaeologists do not identify a biblical site from an ancient-looking object or a matching name alone. They document where remains were found, establish how the deposits relate to one another, date the occupation using associated evidence, and then assess whether historical texts and place-name evidence support a specific identification. That final link is an interpretation, so its degree of certainty matters.

What a “biblical discovery” claim actually includes

The phrase can blur together several different claims: that a place was occupied in antiquity, that it was occupied during a period described in biblical texts, that a particular structure or object belongs to that occupation, or that the site is a named location or setting associated with a biblical account. These are not interchangeable conclusions. Evidence for an ancient settlement does not, by itself, establish its name or prove a specific event took place there.

A careful claim separates what excavators observed from what they infer. A wall, floor, deposit, tomb, inscription, or pottery fragment is an observed remain. Its date, function, relationship to other remains, and connection to a historical name require interpretation. A proposed biblical identification is a further step that combines archaeological evidence with textual, historical, and sometimes place-name comparisons. The ASOR Bulletin discussion of biblical-site identification describes these as distinct kinds of evidence used together.

That distinction is useful whenever a headline turns a qualified report into a definitive announcement. “Ancient,” “biblical-period,” and “Israelite- or Judean-period” describe broad contexts or interpretations; none automatically means “the place where this specific biblical event happened.” The strength of the claim depends on the evidence and on how directly it supports the proposed identification.

Start with the excavation record, not the headline

Before judging a claim, find the underlying excavation or survey publication. A photograph or news summary may show an object, but it generally cannot show the full chain of reasoning that connects an object to a layer, a layer to a date, and a dated occupation to a historical place-name. The Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA) describes its monograph series as covering subjects including site identification, geological setting, stratigraphy, inscriptions, pottery assemblages, excavation strategy, and methodology. Those are the kinds of details a reader needs to evaluate the claim, not simply an attractive find or a dramatic label. See the IAA Reports—Monograph Series catalog.

Look for who conducted the work, where it took place, what areas were examined, what methods or strategy the report describes, and whether the publication is a final report, a survey, or a preliminary account. A preliminary report can provide useful observations and an initial interpretation, but it should not be presented as though it were necessarily the last word. Publication type tells you what kind of account you are reading; it does not, on its own, establish whether a particular conclusion is right.

  • Identify the context: Does the report say where an object or feature was found and what it was associated with?
  • Follow the sequence: Does it explain how layers, structures, and deposits relate to one another?
  • Find the dating argument: Does it connect a date to the finds and contexts, or simply state a date?
  • Separate observation from interpretation: Can you tell what excavators documented directly and what they infer from it?
  • Check the publication’s scope: Is it a survey, preliminary report, or final publication, as described by the source?

Why context and stratigraphy come first

Context is the documented position of a find in relation to deposits, structures, and other remains. Stratigraphy is the sequence of layers and features recorded at a site. Together, they help archaeologists determine whether objects and structures belong to the same phase of activity, whether one feature is earlier or later than another, and whether an item can reasonably be used to interpret a particular occupation.

An object’s appearance cannot answer those questions by itself. A pottery fragment, coin, or inscribed object found in a documented deposit may contribute to interpreting that context. The same kind of object without a clear recorded association offers less basis for connecting it to a wall, floor, or occupation phase. That is why an isolated artifact—even one that looks suggestive—cannot carry a site identification on its own.

The IAA’s preliminary report on Horbat ‘Orva offers a concrete example of the contextual approach. Excavators opened areas along an enclosure wall, documented the wall’s construction and associated deposits, and considered pottery and coins from different contexts when interpreting chronology. The report also draws on survey observations to discuss settlement and abandonment. Its account illustrates how a chronology and an explanation of a site’s history are built from several observations rather than from a single object; it should not be treated as a universal dating protocol. Read the Horbat ‘Orva preliminary report.

When reading any claim, ask whether the report makes clear how the item was found and what it was associated with. If the publication does not establish that relationship, an article should not imply that the object dates or identifies a nearby structure. Keep the limits of the documented context visible in the wording.

How archaeologists build a date for an occupation

Dating an occupation is not the same as identifying a biblical place. Archaeologists build chronological interpretations from relationships among deposits, architecture, and associated finds. Pottery assemblages can help characterize a layer or occupation; coins and other finds may contribute evidence in contexts where they were recovered. The resulting interpretation applies to the documented context and depends on the evidence and methods described in the report. A date assigned to one layer should not automatically be transferred to every feature or object at the site.

The IAA-published report on Tel Shunem (Sulam), by Karen Covello-Paran and Eran Arie, describes five strata and characterizes them using pottery and architectural remains. It assigns those strata to periods from the Late Bronze Age through later periods. The report says pottery indicates a successive Iron I occupation and that biblical and historical sources support that interpretation. This is a useful example of material evidence and textual context being discussed together without pretending they are the same type of evidence. The report is available as “Excavations at Tel Shunem (Sulam), Areas G and G1,” ‘Atiqot 84 (2025).

Pay attention to the wording used for dates. “The report assigns the stratum to…” accurately attributes an interpretation. “This object proves the site dates to…” may overstate what the evidence establishes, especially if the report dates a larger assemblage or a layer rather than the individual object. The report’s stated uncertainty and method belong with the date; an exact period label should not be made to sound more precise or conclusive than the publication supports.

These distinctions also help when multiple phases are reported. A site can contain remains from different periods, so an ancient date for one occupation does not establish that a later wall, inscription, or other feature belongs to it. The relevant question is not only “How old is the site?” but “Which remains are associated with which documented phase, and on what evidence?”

How a proposed biblical identification is evaluated

After archaeologists establish a site’s context and chronology, they can ask whether the evidence supports a connection to a named historical or biblical place. That identification draws on more than age. The comparison may involve archaeological evidence, biblical texts, extra-biblical historical information, and toponymic considerations—comparisons involving place-names. ASOR’s discussion of biblical-site identification describes these evidence categories as part of the process.

A useful identification argument should make its match specific enough to evaluate. It should explain which historical or textual information is relevant, how the archaeological evidence fits that information, and what role any place-name comparison plays. A broad resemblance—an occupation from a relevant period, a similar-sounding name, or an object associated with a general cultural context—is not equivalent to a uniquely demonstrated identification. If more than one location could fit, that uncertainty belongs in the conclusion.

The wording of the report is part of the evidence readers should preserve. In its account of Ḥorbat Burgin, the IAA describes tombs, a cistern, inscriptions, and hiding complexes, and says the finds suggest a large Second Temple-period village. It says the site “should probably be identified” with Kefar Bish in Josephus. “Probably” marks a proposed identification, not a certainty. A headline or summary that removes that qualification changes the strength of the claim. See Boaz Zissu and Amir Ganor’s “Survey and Excavations at Ḥorbat Burgin in the Judean Shephelah,” ‘Atiqot 58 (2008).

An inscription may be important evidence, but it still needs to be interpreted in context and alongside other evidence. A name on an object does not by itself prove that the object was made or used at the site, that the place carried that name, or that a specific biblical episode occurred there. The report’s account of the find, its archaeological association, and the reasoning that links it to a proposed identification all matter.

A practical checklist for evaluating a discovery claim

Use these questions to move from a headline to the underlying argument. A weak answer to one question does not automatically disprove an identification, but it limits how confidently the claim should be stated.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. What was actually found? Identify whether the evidence is a structure, a deposit, pottery, a coin, an inscription, or another feature. Do not let the phrase “biblical discovery” substitute for a description of the remains.
  2. Where and in what context was it found? Look for a documented relationship to a layer, wall, floor, or other remains. If the context is not established in the report, avoid implying a stronger association.
  3. How is the occupation dated? Check which associated evidence the report uses and what phase or stratum the date applies to. Keep the report’s uncertainty and scope attached to the date.
  4. What does the biblical or historical comparison say? Determine whether the text or historical information supports a specific match, or merely makes a general period or region relevant.
  5. What is the place-name argument? If a proposed identification depends on a name comparison, check how it is presented alongside archaeological and historical evidence rather than treating name similarity as proof.
  6. How strong is the report’s wording? Preserve terms such as “may,” “suggests,” and “probably” when the publication uses them. Do not turn a qualified interpretation into a categorical announcement.
  7. Are alternative explanations acknowledged? Consider whether another location or interpretation could also fit the evidence. If the source does not resolve the alternatives, describe the identification as unsettled rather than certain.

The point of the checklist is to keep each link in the argument visible: find to context, context to chronology, chronology to historical comparison, and comparison to a proposed place-name. If one link is tentative, the full identification should be described with appropriate caution.

What the examples do—and do not—show

Tel Shunem, Ḥorbat Burgin, and Horbat ‘Orva illustrate different parts of archaeological interpretation, not a single formula that applies identically to every site. Tel Shunem shows a report describing multiple strata through pottery and architecture, with textual and historical sources also brought into discussion of a successive Iron I occupation. Ḥorbat Burgin shows an explicitly qualified proposed identification based on a group of reported finds and historical comparison. Horbat ‘Orva shows features, deposits, pottery, coins, and survey observations contributing to a chronology and an account of settlement history.

These are examples from IAA publications and one ASOR publication. They should not be treated as a complete account of methods in every archaeological region or as proof that all site identifications follow identical procedures. Their shared lesson is narrower and more useful: a proposed identification is best understood through the documented evidence and reasoning in the report, with each inference kept distinct from the remains that were directly observed.

How to phrase the conclusion accurately

When reporting a claim, name the level of conclusion the evidence supports. If a publication documents an ancient occupation, say that it documents an ancient occupation. If it assigns a stratum to a period, attribute that date to the report. If the authors propose a biblical or historical identification, name it as a proposal and retain their qualification. This makes clear whether the evidence supports an occupation, a period, or a particular place-name connection rather than collapsing all three into “proof.”

The most reliable summary does not ask whether an artifact “looks biblical.” It asks how securely the artifact or structure is tied to its context, how the occupation is dated, and how specifically the archaeological record matches the historical or textual evidence. A strong argument can make a compelling identification; it remains an argument whose certainty should match the published evidence.
