How Archaeologists Identify and Date Ancient Human Remains Found in a House

Archaeologists combine a burial’s context, specialist skeletal assessment, dating evidence and, where appropriate, DNA. No single test usually establishes identity.

Archaeologists do not date human remains simply by dating the house around them. They first record exactly where the bones lie and how they relate to walls, floors, pits, and other deposits; then a human osteologist assesses the remains, and specialists combine archaeological context with suitable dating methods and, when useful, biomolecular evidence. No single test, including DNA, usually establishes a person’s identity on its own.

The guidance described here is from Historic England and applies to archaeological work in England. Laws and procedures differ elsewhere; for a specific discovery, local authorities and specialists should establish the applicable requirements.

Why the bones’ position in the house matters

A burial beneath a floor, bones in a pit, and remains in a layer of demolition debris may look similar at first, but their archaeological relationships can tell different stories. The house’s apparent age is not, by itself, the date of the remains.

Before drawing conclusions, the team records the remains’ position and arrangement in relation to house features and deposits: walls, floors, pits, cuts, fills, and any associated objects. Stratigraphy—the sequence and relationship of layers and features—can show whether a burial came before or after a feature, or whether it cut through an existing deposit. The relationship between a sample and the precise deposit it came from is essential to interpreting a date, as Historic England explains in its scientific dating guidance.

Excavation and sampling should preserve those links. Full excavation can provide a better opportunity to understand context and recover suitable dating samples, but a date from an object or sample is only useful for the burial if its association is secure.

What a human osteologist can establish

A human osteologist is a specialist in human skeletal remains. Historic England says the osteologist’s involvement is central to an archaeological project involving human remains, from planning and excavation through assessment, analysis, reporting, and archiving. Their work helps determine what the bones can—and cannot—show.

Depending on which bones survive and their condition, skeletal features may support estimates of age and sex and document evidence of disease, trauma, or other characteristics. Incompleteness and poor preservation limit confidence. Such observations can help assess a proposed interpretation, but they do not automatically reveal a person’s name or the circumstances of death. See Historic England’s guidance on the role of the human osteologist.

How archaeologists build a date

Dating is a chain of evidence rather than a single test. Archaeologists may use artifact types and stratigraphic sequence to suggest a period, then assess whether scientific dating can test or refine that chronology. Radiocarbon dating can be especially important for an unaccompanied burial; where artifacts are present, it can check or improve the resolution of dating based on artifact typology. Historic England’s advice on science and archaeological human remains discusses these approaches.

Radiocarbon dating

Radiocarbon dating estimates how long it has been since once-living material stopped exchanging carbon with its surroundings. Living material contains a very small proportion of carbon-14—Historic England’s 2022 explanation gives an approximate concentration of one carbon-14 atom per 1 million million carbon atoms. After death, the carbon-14 content declines. A laboratory measures what remains in a sample, after pretreatment intended to remove later carbon contamination.

The laboratory result is a radiocarbon age, not a calendar date. It must be calibrated using an appropriate calibration curve to estimate calendar timescales. Historic England’s 2022 guidance gives about 50,000 years as an approximate upper range for radiocarbon dating; whether a particular sample can be dated depends on the material, its condition, and the facility.

Artifacts, stratigraphy, and chronological models

Artifacts can suggest a period through their type, while stratigraphy establishes the sequence of deposits and features. Neither should be treated as a direct date for the bones unless the association is well established. Where there are multiple dates and clear archaeological relationships, Bayesian chronological modelling can combine dating results with sequence information to refine a chronology. It does not remove uncertainty in the underlying samples or context.

What can make a date misleading?

Contamination and the source of a sample both matter. Later carbon from soil, packaging, conservation treatments, or other materials can affect a sample. Pretreatment helps address contamination, but sample quality and interpretation remain important considerations.

Human bone can also reflect diet. Carbon from marine and freshwater foods comes from reservoirs with different radiocarbon histories; a person who consumed these foods may have bone that appears older than a terrestrial sample of the same age. Historic England recommends considering dietary isotope evidence when dating human bone and, where suitable, favors terrestrial material in English archaeology. Specialists may compare stable isotope measurements and radiocarbon results with appropriate contemporary terrestrial material. One illustrative case in Historic England’s 2022 guidance reported 164±20 BP for a human skeleton and 1611±20 BP for a horse skeleton at Eriswell, Suffolk; those paired results were statistically consistent and showed no significant offset for that individual. They are not a general correction factor for other remains.

What DNA can—and cannot—tell you

Ancient DNA analysis may help investigate biological kinship and population history. It may also offer probabilistic evidence about biological sex when skeletal markers are insufficient. But preservation varies, and ancient samples are vulnerable to modern contamination. A DNA result answers particular biological questions; it does not, by itself, prove that remains belong to a named historical person.

Historic England’s guidance on human remains cautions that ancient DNA analyses are generally not conclusive on their own for personal identification. A proposed named identity is more persuasive when independent evidence converges: archaeological context, historical information, osteological observations, radiocarbon dates, and biomolecular findings. Even then, personal identification of ancient remains may not be unequivocal.

How the evidence fits together

Evidence What it can contribute Key limitation
Context and stratigraphy Relationships among bones, house features, and deposits; the sequence in which features formed. Context establishes relationships, not automatically a calendar date or identity.
Artifacts A period suggested by artifact type; a check on or refinement to other dating evidence. The association between an artifact and the remains must be secure.
Radiocarbon An estimate of the age of once-living material, calibrated to calendar timescales. Sample quality, contamination, calibration, and dietary reservoir effects can affect interpretation.
Osteological assessment Observations about skeletal features, potentially including age, sex, disease, and trauma where preservation permits. What can be assessed depends on which remains survive and their condition; observations do not by themselves establish a name.
Ancient DNA Evidence relevant to kinship and population history, and in some cases probabilistic evidence about biological sex. Preservation and contamination are challenges; DNA alone generally does not establish personal identity.

These methods answer different questions. A reliable interpretation depends on whether each item of evidence is directly connected to the burial, what could undermine it, and whether other independent lines of evidence support the same conclusion.

Ethical and legal considerations in England

Excavating, studying, and archiving human remains raises distinct legal and ethical issues. Historic England’s advice for England includes the work of the Advisory Panel on the Archaeology of Burials in England (APABE). Requirements depend on the circumstances and location of a discovery, so the English guidance should not be assumed to apply in other jurisdictions.
