For steep terrain, an approach shoe should hold your heel and midfoot securely while letting the forefoot edge with control. Leave enough room at the toes for a comfortable walk and descent; the fit should not cause painful pressure, pinching, or unwanted foot movement. Try the shoes with your intended socks and test them on terrain-like movements rather than automatically sizing down as you might for rock shoes.
What a good steep-terrain fit feels like
Approach shoes bridge hiking footwear and climbing shoes. They are made for the walk to a climbing area and for scrambling, with more focus on toe precision and forefoot stability than ordinary hiking shoes, but generally more toe room than rock shoes. Arc’teryx cautions that approach shoes are not intended for routes requiring extremely precise foot placement. Arc’teryx’s women’s approach-shoe guidance describes that distinction; SCARPA’s approach-shoe guidance emphasizes precision and stability on rocky, technical passages.

The target is secure, not painfully tight. SCARPA says the shoe should “wrap the foot securely, keep the heel locked in place and ensure solid forefoot control, without pressure points that could compromise movement on delicate terrain.” For its own approach shoes, Arc’teryx similarly advises a close midfoot fit for support, with a toe box roomy enough for walking and downhill comfort but not so loose that scrambling control suffers. These are useful principles, not a guarantee that every brand’s lasts or models fit alike.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

- Heel: stays seated rather than lifting or sliding.
- Midfoot: feels held and stable without painful pressure.
- Forefoot: can press onto an edge with control.
- Toes: have usable room for walking and descents, without so much slack that the foot shifts during technical movement.
How to test a pair before choosing a size
- Wear your intended socks. Sock thickness changes the available room; Arc’teryx specifically recommends accounting for it in its approach-shoe fit guidance.
- Lace for the technical section. Check that the heel stays seated and the midfoot feels supported. Tighten enough for control, but not so much that the laces create painful pressure.
- Walk on a ramp or stairs, if available. On a descent, the toes should not be forced into painful contact. Watch for heel slide or pinching; Mammut’s buyer’s guide also recommends adequate toe room and no heel movement or pinching.
- Try edging. Stand on a small edge using the big toe, then the side of the forefoot. Arc’teryx’s fit checklist calls out big-toe edging and under-big-toe stiffness as checks.
- Test movements relevant to your route, where safe. Edging, smearing, jamming, and heel or toe hooks can reveal differences between technical models. Climbing.com’s 2026 approach-shoe guide recommends assessing shoes through these kinds of movements.
- Adjust before rejecting the fit. If the heel lifts, try a heel-lock lacing configuration. If pressure points or loss of circulation persist, try another size or last instead of assuming the shoe must be painfully tight.
How much should you size down?
There is no universal approach-shoe size-down rule in the cited guidance. Climbing.com’s 2026 guide notes that some people choose a half or full size down for a snug performance fit, but says there is no hard-and-fast rule like there is for many rock shoes. Arc’teryx instead stresses midfoot security, toe room, and sock thickness. Treat any size recommendation as model- and foot-dependent, and use the movement checks rather than the number on the box as your final test.

Balance walking comfort with scrambling precision
A long trail approach makes comfortable toe room more valuable; steep, rocky scrambling puts more weight on heel hold and forefoot precision. If a trip combines both, look for a shoe whose fit can be adjusted for different sections. AKU describes its Dual Fit System as offering “Comfort Walking” for mileage and “Precise Climbing” for technical ground. That is one manufacturer’s system, not a feature to expect on every approach shoe.
When comparing models, consider the heel and midfoot hold, edge control, toe room on descents, fit volume or last, intended sock thickness, upper construction, and how much of your trip is walking versus technical scrambling. A shoe that works for one foot shape or route may not suit another.

Will the upper stretch?
Construction can affect how a shoe changes with wear. Arc’teryx’s fit checklist says an unlined leather shoe can stretch up to half a size or more over time, while a lined synthetic upper with a tensioned rand tends to hold its shape and fit. This is manufacturer guidance about those constructions, not a universal prediction for every shoe.
