These features may prompt follow-up with a clinician; they do not independently diagnose, treat, or prevent a condition, and Apple Watch cannot detect a heart attack.
How Apple Watch can draw attention to a health concern
Apple Watch health features can surface information a wearer might otherwise not notice. High- and low-heart-rate alerts can flag readings outside a configured threshold, while irregular-rhythm notifications look for patterns that may suggest atrial fibrillation (AFib). On Apple Watch Series 4 or later, the ECG app lets the wearer record a heart rhythm using the watch’s electrical heart sensor; the reading is saved in Apple Health.

These are different interactions: an irregular-rhythm notification is generated occasionally in the background, while an ECG is a recording the user initiates. Apple Health brings together health data from iPhone, Apple Watch, and third-party apps, making it a place to review stored information. The 9to5Mac guide describes these features and gathers personal accounts of people who credit a watch alert or recording with prompting them to discover a possible problem. Such anecdotes are personal accounts, not evidence that the watch independently diagnosed or saved someone.
What irregular-rhythm notifications can—and cannot—tell you
Apple says the notification feature occasionally examines the heartbeat, usually while the wearer is still, for a rhythm that may indicate AFib. Apple states that it is “not constantly looking for AFib.” It may miss episodes and may not notify a person who has AFib. Availability is limited to certain countries and regions; the feature is not designed for people already diagnosed with AFib or intended for people under 22. See Apple Support’s guidance on heart health notifications for current availability and details.

A notification is therefore a reason to seek appropriate medical advice, not a diagnosis. Apple Support cites CDC estimates that AFib affects approximately 2% of people younger than 65 and 9% of people 65 and older; the Apple Support page does not state the year of the underlying CDC figures.
What an ECG recording adds
The ECG app, introduced with Apple Watch Series 4, records heartbeat and rhythm through the electrical heart sensor and checks the reading for signs of AFib. The recording is stored in Apple Health. Unlike the irregular-rhythm notification, it is initiated by the wearer rather than being an occasional background check. Neither an ECG result nor a notification replaces clinical assessment; discuss concerning readings or symptoms with a healthcare professional.

Can Apple Watch detect a heart attack?
No. Apple is explicit: “Apple Watch cannot detect heart attacks.” Chest pain, pressure, or tightness can require emergency care. Contact emergency services for those symptoms, whether or not the watch has issued an alert. Apple also advises consulting a doctor about feeling unwell even when no notification appears.
What “saving lives” means in practice
Apple says its watch can detect possible underlying conditions so people can act sooner. That is the company’s description of the potential value of its health features, not independent proof of improved outcomes. A watch alert or saved ECG may help start a conversation or encourage follow-up; the medical evaluation and any treatment remain the work of qualified clinicians. The available personal stories illustrate why users value an alert, but do not establish how often alerts change outcomes or prove that the device itself prevented harm.
