How Antarctic Algae Blooms Affect Snowmelt and Wildlife

Antarctic snow algae lower snow reflectivity and can contribute to faster melting. Their proximity to penguin colonies points to a nutrient link, not a proven effect on wildlife health or populations.

Yes. When snow algae grow at the surface, their green or red pigments darken the snow, so it reflects less sunlight and absorbs more energy. That can accelerate melting. Penguins, seals and other marine animals are linked to blooms mainly because their waste supplies nutrients—not because the evidence shows that algae feed wildlife or that algae-driven melt has already changed animal health or populations.

How algae can make snow melt faster

Clean snow reflects much of the sunlight that reaches it. This reflectivity is called albedo. Snow algae add pigmented cells and biomass to the surface; darker patches reflect less light, leaving more solar energy available to warm and melt the snow. The effect is a feedback at the surface: biological growth changes the snow’s reflectivity, which changes how much energy it absorbs.

A 2021 study by Khan and colleagues measured snow at three Antarctic Peninsula bloom sites. Relative to clean snow, visibly green patches had an estimated 40% reduction in albedo, while red patches had an estimated 20% reduction. These are study results from those sites, not fixed values for every bloom or for Antarctica as a whole. The authors also reported greater overall albedo reduction for the measured green patches, even though red communities absorbed more light per milligram of pigment at some measured wavelengths. Color alone therefore does not give a complete measure of a bloom’s effect.

The same study estimated mean instantaneous radiative forcing of 180 W m−2 for green communities and 88 W m−2 for red communities, with a reported maximum of 228 W m−2. Its mean daily estimates during peak growing season were about 26 W m−2 for green algae and 13 W m−2 for red algae, derived using multi-year solar-radiation measurements at Palmer Station. These are study estimates, not direct measurements of the melt rate across the Peninsula. The publisher page flags a corrigendum, so the study’s detailed modeled melt quantities should not be treated as final without checking the correction. The practical answer is that algae can increase the energy absorbed by snow and thereby contribute to faster melt where blooms occur. The strongest quantitative evidence cited here is from three Peninsula sites and field measurements in 2018; it does not establish a uniform effect across the continent or quantify the total melt caused by algae across Antarctica.

Why some Antarctic snow is green or red

Green and red snow are visible blooms of algae growing in seasonal snow under suitable conditions. In its 2020 Peninsula mapping study, Gray and colleagues found blooms in areas with average positive summer temperatures. Their distribution was also strongly influenced by marine nutrient inputs. As the algae become visible at the snow surface, their pigments tint the surrounding snow and reduce its reflectivity.

Green and red are not simply two versions of the same pigment response. The 2021 measurements found that green patches darkened snow more overall relative to clean snow, while red communities absorbed more light per milligram of pigment in some wavelengths. Those observations concern different ways of describing light absorption; they do not support a simple claim that one color is always more ecologically important or has the larger effect in every setting.

Bloom visibility also shapes what researchers can map. Satellite imagery can detect colored patches once algae reach the snow surface, but may miss smaller patches and blooms that are obscured by clouds or snowfall. Terrain and satellite resolution impose further limits. A map of visible blooms is therefore a regional estimate, not a complete inventory of all algae species, locations or growth stages.

What researchers mapped on the Antarctic Peninsula

Using Sentinel-2 imagery from 2017–2019, supported by field observations, Gray and colleagues mapped 1,679 blooms on the Antarctic Peninsula. They estimated 1.95 × 106 m2 of seasonal coverage and about 1.3 × 103 tonnes of dry biomass. The mapped area is roughly 1.9 km2. These figures describe that study’s imagery period and mapped region; they are not a 2026 census or an estimate for all of Antarctica. The Nature Communications study explains the mapping and its detection limits.

The map provides a regional view of where blooms were visible, rather than proof that every site was observed at every point in the season. Cloud cover, snowfall, terrain and image resolution can all affect detection. In particular, researchers noted that the imagery could miss smaller patches and would detect blooms when algae were visible on the snow surface. The mapped total should be read as an estimate of observed seasonal coverage under those conditions, not as a precise measure of every algal cell or all snow algae habitat.

How penguins and other wildlife are connected to blooms

Penguins, seals and other marine animals can transport nutrients onto land through their excreta. Those nutrients can support algae in coastal snow. A National Snow and Ice Data Center summary notes that researchers selected field sites frequented by marine animals because their waste supplies nutrients algae need.

The Peninsula-wide mapping study found that 60% of mapped green blooms were within 5 km of a penguin colony. Blooms close to colonies also tended to be larger and to have higher cell concentrations. This spatial pattern is consistent with nutrient inputs from wildlife helping support blooms. It does not show that penguins are attracted to algae, that blooms are a food source for them, or that the algae directly benefit or harm penguins.

The evidence reviewed here does not report measured changes in wildlife health, abundance or behavior caused by blooms or by algae-enhanced melt. That is an evidence gap, not proof that there can be no effect. The 2021 paper discusses possible implications of meltwater for coastal nutrients and marine production, but those possibilities are not the same as direct measurements of animal outcomes. The available findings establish a connection between animals, nutrients and bloom locations more clearly than they establish any resulting effect on wildlife.

What warming could mean for bloom locations

Gray and colleagues observed that mapped bloom area and maximum elevation increased toward lower latitudes along the Antarctic Peninsula. They reasoned that warming could create more suitable habitat in ablation zones—the areas where snow and ice are lost—on larger landmasses near nutrient sources. This is an interpretation of observed distribution patterns and a projection about possible habitat shifts, not a certainty about future bloom growth.

Geography may constrain those shifts. The study found that 62% of its mapped blooms were on small islands without local ice caps or mountains that would allow algae to move upward as conditions change. Such low-lying islands may lose snow habitat, while some larger land areas could gain suitable habitat. The projected changes need not move all blooms in the same direction, and the study does not establish what the resulting changes would mean for wildlife populations.

It is therefore more accurate to say that warming may redistribute where snow algae can thrive than to say Antarctic blooms will simply become more common everywhere. Temperature, suitable seasonal snow and nutrient availability all matter; local land shape can determine whether habitat has room to shift. The mapping study’s patterns support this conditional outlook, but they do not provide a continent-wide forecast of future bloom area.

How to interpret the melt figures

Albedo reduction, radiative forcing and modeled melt volume describe related but different things. Albedo reduction measures a change in the fraction of incoming light reflected by snow. Radiative forcing expresses an energy effect under the study’s measurement and modeling assumptions. A modeled seasonal melt volume is an estimate for a defined area and period, not a direct observation of the amount of snow melted everywhere by algae.

The 2021 paper reported annual summer modeled volumes of about 2,522 m3 attributed to green-colored algae and 1,218 m3 to red-colored algae in its modeled area. Those detailed volumes are subject to the paper’s corrigendum; they should not be used as settled values without review of the correction. They also should not be generalized to the entire Peninsula or Antarctica. The albedo and radiative-forcing figures likewise come from a limited study setting and should retain their measurement and model context when cited.

For readers, the robust distinction is between a well-supported physical mechanism and an incompletely established ecological chain. Pigmented algae lower snow reflectivity, and the cited study quantified that effect at three sites. But the sources do not quantify a complete pathway from algae, through additional meltwater and coastal ecosystem change, to a measured wildlife population outcome.

What the evidence does—and does not—show

  • Supported: Surface snow algae can darken snow, lower its albedo and increase absorbed solar energy, contributing to melt.
  • Measured in a limited setting: A 2021 study reported different albedo and forcing estimates for green and red patches at three Antarctic Peninsula sites.
  • Mapped regionally: A 2020 study estimated visible seasonal bloom coverage and biomass on the Antarctic Peninsula from Sentinel-2 imagery collected in 2017–2019.
  • Associated, not causal proof of animal effects: Bloom locations are linked to nutrient inputs, and many mapped green blooms were near penguin colonies.
  • Not established by these sources: Direct changes in wildlife health, behavior or abundance caused by algae or algae-enhanced melt.
  • Projected, not certain: Warming may shift suitable habitat differently on larger land areas and low islands.
