How Android Zero-Day Vulnerabilities Are Discovered and Patched

Android zero-days move through discovery, verification, coordinated remediation and device-specific update channels. Here’s how bulletins and patch levels fit into that process.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Android zero-days are found through a mix of security research, testing and reporting, then investigated and fixed by whichever teams own the affected software. Google coordinates parts of that work and publishes Android security bulletins, but it does not control every Android component or deliver every fix to every phone. The chipset, device maker, update channel and affected component all help determine when protection reaches a particular device.

What does “zero-day” mean?

A zero-day is a vulnerability that is being exploited or disclosed before a fix is available. The term describes the vulnerability’s status at a particular point in time; it does not mean every flaw found by researchers was used in an attack. A security report can reveal a serious weakness that nobody has exploited, while a confirmed active attack may be only one reason a vulnerability receives urgent attention.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Discovery, verification, remediation and delivery are separate stages. A flaw may be found privately, confirmed by the affected team, fixed in source code and described in a bulletin, yet still not be installed on a particular phone. To understand the protection a user has, it is important to distinguish a public patch from an update actually received and installed on the device.

How are Android zero-days found?

There is no single discovery route. Researchers can inspect software and report a flaw; security testing can exercise code automatically; and a vulnerability can also emerge through other analysis or incident response. Google’s 2017 Android security report documented several routes, including its Android Security Rewards program, external research competitions, fuzzing and sanitizer-assisted analysis. These are historical examples, not a complete or current inventory of Google’s detection methods.

Independent research and reward programs

External researchers investigate eligible software, develop evidence that a weakness can affect users, and report it through the relevant program. Google’s current Android and Google Devices Security Reward Program applies only to the devices and software in its stated scope. Its rules require a functional proof of concept and evidence of clear user risk. They call for enough technical detail to reproduce and triage the issue; a theoretical attack path or an unminimized fuzzer crash by itself is not enough to make a submission actionable under those rules.

For memory-corruption reports, the program requires a proposed patch or root-cause fix. This reflects a practical distinction: a crash can be a useful clue, but maintainers need to understand the underlying defect and the realistic security impact to fix it reliably. Researchers should check the current scope and submission rules before reporting, because not every Android-related product or upstream software component is eligible.

Fuzzing and dynamic analysis

Fuzzing feeds software many generated or mutated inputs to expose unexpected behavior, such as a crash or memory error. Dynamic analysis observes a program while it runs; sanitizers can detect certain classes of memory errors during execution. These techniques can help researchers find a lead, but the resulting failure still has to be investigated: the team needs to establish the root cause, whether an attacker can reach it, and what harm could result.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Google’s Android Security 2017 Year in Review reported that Android 8.0 increased support for fuzzing, integrated fuzzing tools into the build system and expanded dynamic analysis support on Android kernels. The report also described AddressSanitizer (ASan) as detecting memory errors at runtime and noted researchers had submitted ASan crash logs. Those details describe tooling and activity reported for that period, not necessarily how Google tests Android today.

Choose the right reporting route

The component where the flaw lives matters. Google’s program overview distinguishes the Android and Google Devices Security Reward Program from the Mobile Vulnerability Reward Program, which handles first-party Android applications. A vulnerability in an application, an Android platform component or a device-specific module may therefore need a different route. Generic upstream Linux vulnerabilities are outside the Android and Google Devices program’s scope unless a report demonstrates direct exploitable impact specifically on Android or Pixel-maintained modules.

Google’s 2017 report gives historical context for the scale of its external research effort: since June 2015, the program had awarded more than 177 researchers with nearly 1,000 rewards. It reported $1.28 million paid in 2017 and $2.2 million in total since the program began. These figures belong to that report’s historical period and are not current reward rates or a guide to what a submission would earn today.

What happens after a report?

A report or internal detection begins an investigation, not an automatic patch. The affected team must reproduce the behavior, assess its security impact and identify the software and devices involved. An actionable report helps answer questions such as: Can an attacker trigger the flaw? What access or user interaction would be required? Could the issue expose data, execute code or affect device operation? The answers help determine priority and which owners need to participate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Report or detection: A researcher, testing process or other discovery route identifies a possible weakness.
  2. Reproduction and impact assessment: The relevant team checks that the behavior is real, investigates its root cause and evaluates realistic user risk.
  3. Ownership and remediation: The issue is routed to the platform, kernel, chipset, device or application owner responsible for the affected code. Engineers develop and validate a fix.
  4. Coordination: Google and affected industry partners coordinate remediation and timing where the issue crosses organizational boundaries.
  5. Release and communication: A fix is distributed through the relevant source and device update channels, and public documentation may identify the issue and its coverage.

These stages can overlap, and not every issue follows an identical path. Google’s program rules ask researchers to allow a reasonable remediation period before public release and describe coordinated disclosure as prioritizing end-user security. They do not establish one universal embargo duration for every Android report.

Why details may remain private at first

Publishing exploit-enabling details before affected devices have a practical fix can increase risk. Coordinated disclosure gives owners time to investigate, prepare remediation and work with partners before broader technical details become public. Google’s 2017 report described BlueBorne as a historical example: researchers privately reported findings to Google, which coordinated updates with the researchers and industry partners before wider disclosure. That case illustrates the approach; it does not set a standard response time for other flaws.

Who fixes Android security vulnerabilities?

Android is an ecosystem of software with multiple owners, not one codebase maintained and shipped end to end by Google. The responsible party depends on the vulnerable component. AOSP is the Android Open Source Project; upstream Linux and system-on-chip (SoC) software have their own maintainers and release paths; device makers integrate software and provide updates for specific models.

Where the issue is Who is involved in the fix What that means for users
Android platform code in AOSP Google and the relevant Android platform engineers prepare or coordinate platform changes; the Android Security Bulletins overview says platform fixes are merged into AOSP 24–48 hours after quarterly bulletins. An AOSP change is a source-level milestone. It does not mean every manufacturer has integrated or delivered the fix to each device.
Upstream Linux Linux maintainers and relevant contributors handle the upstream fix; Android bulletins link to upstream Linux fixes where applicable. Device software must incorporate the applicable kernel change through its own release and update process.
SoC or chipset software The relevant SoC manufacturer supplies fixes for its components. Availability can depend on the chipset, its integration in a particular model and the device maker’s update process.
Device-specific software or integration The device manufacturer may provide additional issue details and prepares or distributes updates for its devices. Timing and availability can vary by manufacturer and model, even when a bulletin has already been published.

Google’s August 2026 Android Security Bulletin says corresponding AOSP source patches are released within 48 hours after the initial bulletin publication, with bulletin links updated when available. That timing concerns the corresponding source patches; it is not a deadline for manufacturers to ship a device update. The Android Security Bulletins overview separately describes platform fixes merging into AOSP 24–48 hours after quarterly bulletins, upstream Linux fixes being linked in bulletins, and SoC fixes coming from manufacturers. The origin of a fix and the bulletin context affect which timing statement applies.

What an Android security bulletin tells you

A bulletin is a public record of security issues and fixes, not a live status page for every phone. Entries can include CVE identifiers, Android bug references, vulnerability type, severity, affected AOSP versions and links to public changes when available. The June 2025 Android bulletin, for example, listed these fields and separated Project Mainline entries and component-specific issues from the core Android platform listing. That example shows the bulletin’s structure; it does not establish how common or severe zero-days are today.

Read the affected component and version information alongside the CVE and severity. A bulletin entry may concern a specific software layer rather than every Android device. Public changes may be linked when available, but the absence of a link in a listing should not be taken as proof that no fix exists. Device makers may publish additional details for their products.

How to interpret patch levels

The security patch level is a date-like label that identifies a set of security fixes covered by the device’s installed update. It does not report the date the phone was manufactured, and it is not a guarantee that all devices received the corresponding update simultaneously.

The August 2026 bulletin explains that two security patch levels let partners fix a subset of similar issues more quickly; Google encourages partners to include all fixes and use the latest level. For that bulletin, a patch level of 2026-08-01 or later covers the issues for that patch level and earlier levels. The label therefore helps describe coverage, but it must be interpreted in the context of that bulletin and the device’s update information.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Google stated in the Android Security Bulletin—August 2026: “We notify our Android partners of all issues at least a month before publishing the bulletin.” This is an operational statement about partner notification, not a promise that each manufacturer will release an update on the bulletin date.

How long does a security patch take to reach a phone?

There is no single Android-wide delivery interval established by the bulletin process. The route depends on which component is affected, who maintains it, whether the fix falls under the relevant patch level, and the manufacturer’s release process for a specific model. Some Android 10 and later devices may also receive Google Play system updates, which provide another update channel for eligible components. A bulletin’s publication or an AOSP source change is not evidence that a particular phone has installed the fix.

To understand a delay, check these distinctions rather than treating all Android updates as one pipeline:

  • Component and owner: AOSP, upstream Linux, SoC software and device-specific code have different maintainers and fix channels.
  • Patch-level coverage: Check whether the issue is addressed by the device’s stated patch level and the bulletin’s base or later level.
  • Model and maker: Update availability can vary by device model and the manufacturer’s distribution channel.
  • Update type: Some eligible components on Android 10 and later may be delivered through a Google Play system update rather than the same route as a full system update.

How to check your Android security patch level

Menu wording varies among Android versions and manufacturers. On many devices, the patch-level date appears in the Android version details; software update controls may be in a separate menu. Use the device maker’s instructions if the labels below do not match your phone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Find the installed patch date: Open Settings, then look under About phone or About device for Android version or Software information. Read the entry labeled Android security update or Security patch level.
  2. Check for a system update: In Settings, open System and choose Software update or System update. On some devices, update controls appear under About phone. Follow the on-screen instructions if an update is available.
  3. Check Google Play system updates if supported: Android 10 and later devices may receive these updates. Look in the device’s security or system update settings for Google Play system update; the exact location and availability vary.
  4. Confirm model-specific availability: Consult the manufacturer’s update information for the exact model and region. A bulletin entry or an update available for another model does not confirm that your device has received the same fix.

If the phone reports that it is up to date but its patch level is older than a bulletin date, that alone does not prove a particular vulnerability is unpatched: the bulletin may cover different components or levels, and the manufacturer’s model-specific notes may clarify coverage. Conversely, a newly published bulletin does not mean the phone is protected until the relevant update has been made available and installed.

What other protections do—and do not—do

Google’s August 2026 bulletin says newer Android platform enhancements make exploitation of many issues more difficult and describes Google Play Protect as monitoring for and warning about potentially harmful applications. Such measures can reduce risk, but they are mitigations, not substitutes for applicable security updates. A narrower statement in Android 17 release notes says there were no reports of active customer exploitation or abuse of the newly reported issues covered by those notes. That statement applies to those issues and those release notes only; it does not establish that Android has no actively exploited vulnerabilities.
