Google sends Pixel updates out gradually, so an announcement that a release has started does not mean it is immediately available on every eligible phone. Google says timing depends on the device and carrier, and an update may take a few weeks to arrive. Check the phone’s update screen for its own status rather than treating an announcement date as a delivery deadline.
How Pixel update rollouts work
Google’s guidance is straightforward: updates roll out gradually and depend on carrier and device. Google does not publish the detailed selection algorithm, phase sizes, or the reason one eligible phone receives an update before another. There is therefore no official basis for assuming that selection is random, follows a particular regional queue, or can be moved forward by repeatedly checking.

Monthly announcements illustrate how this works without setting a universal schedule. In September 2026, Google said supported Pixel devices running Android 17 would begin receiving that month’s updates that day, with rollout continuing “over the next week in phases,” depending on carrier and device. A July 2026 announcement described that release in similar terms. Those are descriptions of specific rollouts, not a standing deadline for every monthly update.

- Announcement: Google says an update is beginning to roll out to supported devices. This is not confirmation that it is available on your particular phone.
- Availability: The update is offered to your device. Google says a notification appears when it is ready, and you can also check manually.
- Download and installation: Pixel downloads and installs updates in the background. If a download does not finish, Google says the phone automatically tries again over the next few days and sends a notification.
- Activation: The installed update becomes active the next time the phone restarts.
Why hasn’t my Pixel received the update yet?
If Google has announced an update but your phone does not offer it, the supported explanation is that rollout is gradual and depends on carrier and device. Google’s general support guidance says it may take a few weeks for an update to arrive. That is an estimate, not a guaranteed maximum wait or a promise that every phone will receive it within a fixed period.
#1 Best Overall
- Attention-grabbing design meets the latest evolution of the Google Pixel Camera on the new Google Pixel 11 Pro; Gemini Intelligence helps manage details so you can live in the moment[1]; and the phone is available in two sizes
- Unlocked Android phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan: Works with Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers[2]
- Stay informed without looking at your screen: When your phone is face down, Pixel HiLight gently alerts you with subtle glowing lights when your favorite contacts are calling or you’re talking with Gemini; exclusive to Google Pixel 11 Pro phones
- Magic Capture catches the moment as you live it: With just one tap, Pixel 11 Pro captures video and photos, and automatically edits, crops, and unblurs a curated collection, ready to share – and you get the memory of how it felt to be in the moment
- Two new cameras for more brilliant photos: A larger telephoto sensor captures 30% more light for clear, beautiful photos and videos, even in the dark[3]; Pixel’s longest zoom ever helps you capture details from impressive distances[4]
Google’s guidance does not say that switching networks, restarting, or checking repeatedly will put a phone earlier in the rollout. If the device remains eligible, check again later rather than relying on an unsupported workaround.
How to check for an Android update on a Pixel
- Open Settings.
- Tap System, then Software updates.
- Review the displayed update status and follow any on-screen instructions.
Google says a notification also appears when an update is ready. A manual check is useful if you dismissed that notification or were offline when it arrived; it does not change the rollout schedule.

Prepare the phone and handle an interrupted update
- Connect to Wi-Fi before updating. Google notes that updates can be large and take time.
- Charge the device to at least 75%, as Google advises, before starting an update. This is preparation for installation, not a way to make the update arrive sooner.
- If the download does not complete, Google says the phone will retry automatically over the next few days and notify you.
After an update, Google says battery drain is normally higher than usual while the phone downloads, optimizes, and sets up the new software. Google does not specify a duration for this behavior.

Check whether your Pixel model is still supported
Rollout timing matters only if the model is eligible for the update. Google’s current Pixel update policy states the following support periods, counted from when each device first became available on the Google Store in the US:
| Pixel models | Google’s stated OS and security update period |
|---|---|
| Pixel 8 and later | Seven years |
| Listed Pixel 6 and Pixel 7 generation devices, and Pixel Fold | Five years |
| Pixel 5a and earlier | No longer receive Android version or security updates |
These are support commitments, not delivery dates. Check Google’s policy page for the exact model list and current status; a model’s place within its support period does not mean a monthly update will arrive on announcement day.
