Android search privacy is controlled in several places, not by one master switch. Google Account activity settings govern whether searches are saved to your account; Android has separate controls for on-device personalization and location permissions. Turning a setting off generally affects future use or saving—it does not automatically erase information already stored. The exact menus can vary as Google gradually rolls out updated history controls.
What Android Search may save to your Google Account
When you’re signed in and the relevant activity control is on, Google may save Search activity and related information to your account. Web & App Activity can include searches and activity on Google products and services, along with details such as language and device type. Depending on your selected options, it may also include Chrome history, audio interactions, and activity from sites or apps that use Google services. Some associated information may include general location or IP information. Google’s Web & App Activity help explains the control and its options.

These account controls apply across devices where you’re signed in to the account. If you use more than one Google Account, check the account currently selected; administrator-managed accounts may have different controls or restrictions.

How to stop saving future search activity
- On Android, open Settings > Google > Manage your Google Account.
- Open Data & privacy, then find History settings.
- Select the relevant activity control and follow the on-screen options to turn it off.
Google is gradually introducing a separate Search Services History control for Search and other services. If it appears in your account, use the current screen’s wording to manage it. If it does not appear, Google says Web & App Activity continues to control search history and personalized recommendations. Menu names and availability can differ by account, Android version, and rollout status. See Google’s activity controls instructions and its Search Services History information.

How to review or delete searches already saved
Stopping future activity saving and deleting past activity are separate actions. To inspect or remove saved items, open Manage your Google Account > Data & privacy and go to My Activity. Choose the relevant history page and use its deletion controls to remove individual items, a date range, or available history. If offered, Turn off and delete combines turning off the control with starting deletion; turning the control off alone does not delete existing history.
For Search Services History, Google documents continuous auto-delete choices of 3, 18, or 36 months. These are available settings, not a universal default; the options depend on what has rolled out for your account. Google describes deletion as a process: activity is first removed from view and made unavailable for personalization, then processed for deletion from storage systems. Some data may be retained longer for limited business or legal purposes. Details are in Google’s history controls guidance and Google’s explanation of data deletion.

How to manage Android’s on-device personalization index
Android’s Personalize using shared data setting governs a different layer: an index of data stored on the device that Google apps such as Search and Assistant may use for suggestions and recommendations. To review it, open Settings > Google > All services > Privacy & security > Personalize using shared data. You can choose which apps or other sources make indexed data available to Google apps.
Restricting access to this local index does not by itself stop account-level Web & App Activity saving or personalization. Treat device personalization and Google Account history as separate controls. See Google’s Android personalization instructions.

How to control Contextual Suggestions
Contextual Suggestions is a Google Play services feature for app suggestions based on activity and location. Google says the feature’s data stays on-device, is not shared with Google, and is used for on-device learning. Its controls are located at Settings > Apps > All apps > Google Play services > All services > Developer features > Contextual Suggestions. Depending on your preference, turn the feature off, leave it on while disabling Use device location, or delete its stored data.
Google says Contextual Suggestions data is automatically deleted after 60 days. That period applies to this feature, not Google Account Search history or Android data generally. See Google’s Contextual Suggestions help.

How location can affect Google Search results
Search can estimate your location in more than one way. Google lists several possible signals, depending on what is available:
- Precise device location: Android device and app or site permissions can make precise location available, which may improve nearby results such as coffee shops or ATMs.
- Saved home or work addresses: Google may use addresses saved to your account when estimating that you are at one of those places.
- Previous Google activity: If you’re signed in with Web & App Activity enabled, past searches can influence later location estimates. Google gives the example of a neighborhood search affecting a subsequent local-business search.
- IP address: Your internet connection’s IP address can indicate a general geographic area.
At the bottom of a Google results page, check the location explanation to see how Google says it estimated your location. Changing device location permissions can limit precise device-based location, but it does not erase account history or necessarily prevent Google from using saved places, past activity, or general location inferred from your IP address. Google explains these signals in its Search location help.

Choose the control that matches your goal
| What you want to change | Where to look | What it affects |
|---|---|---|
| Stop future account history saving | Google Account > Data & privacy > History settings | Relevant activity saved to the signed-in account; the available Search control may depend on rollout. |
| Remove searches already saved | Google Account > Data & privacy > My Activity | Initiates deletion of selected saved activity; turning off a control alone is not deletion. |
| Limit Google apps’ access to the device personalization index | Android Settings > Google > All services > Privacy & security > Personalize using shared data | Access to selected on-device indexed data, not account-level activity saving. |
| Change Contextual Suggestions | Google Play services > All services > Developer features > Contextual Suggestions | The separate app-suggestion feature, including its device-location option and stored data. |
| Limit precise device location for Search | Android device and app or site location permissions | Whether precise device-based location is available; other location signals may still apply. |
