On a Samsung Galaxy phone, printing is a handoff: an app prepares printable content, Android provides the shared print controls, and an enabled print service finds or communicates with a printer. The printer and service determine which connection methods and print options are available. You can use Android’s Default Print Service, a printer-maker plugin, a supported IP-address setup, or—in some combinations—a wired USB connection.
What happens when you tap Print
- An app offers a print action. Android’s printing framework supports printing images and documents from apps on Android 4.4 (API level 19) and later, but an app must expose a print action for its content. Samsung cautions that not all apps support printing. Android Developers: Printing; Samsung Support: Print from your Galaxy phone or tablet.
- The app prepares the document. Android apps use the print framework to start a job and provide printable output. Page size, orientation, and other selected settings can affect how the app lays out the document. PDF is Android’s primary print format for broad compatibility. - Android shows shared controls and routes the job. The Android print manager mediates between apps that request print jobs and the installed print services. This is why printing is an Android platform feature, not a mechanism limited to Samsung apps. Android Developers: android.print; Android 4.4 KitKat.
- A print service handles printer communication. Services are plugins that know how to communicate with printers using supported protocols; a service may also discover available printers. Android describes them as a bridge between the system and printers. Android Developers: android.printservice.
- The printer’s capabilities shape the result. The printer and its service report what media sizes, color modes, and other options are available. As a result, the controls shown on the phone vary by printer. Android Developers: android.print; Samsung Support.
Set up printing on a Galaxy phone
Samsung’s US support instructions provide a practical starting point for recent Galaxy devices. Menu names and paths can differ by model, software version, and region; use Settings search if the labels do not match.

- Open Settings, search for Printing, and open the printing settings. Turn on the service you intend to use.
- Try Default Print Service. If the printer is compatible, it should appear in the printer list. To add a printer by address, open the additional-options menu and choose Add printer, then enter its IP address.
- If the printer requires a manufacturer-specific service, select Download plugin, install the appropriate plugin from Google Play, and return to the printing settings.
- Open the content in an app that supports printing. Depending on the app, choose Share → Print or find Print in the app’s More or menu options.
- Tap Select printer and choose the printer. Expand the settings to review available paper size, color, orientation, and printer-specific options, then tap the Print icon.
- To create a file instead of sending a paper job, choose Save as PDF in the printer selector and save the PDF.
Samsung says most printers need to be configured for wireless use and directs users to the printer maker for setup help. The available route is not universal: it can depend on the phone, printer, service, network, and regional software. Samsung’s older Galaxy S9+ manual, for example, documents Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi Direct for that device era, while its France guide describes a same-Wi-Fi route. Choose the right service and connection
- Service compatibility: Check whether the printer works with Default Print Service or requires a maker’s plugin. Confirm that the plugin is available for the device and region; Samsung recommends checking with the printer manufacturer when unsure.
- Connection method: Depending on the devices and their configuration, printing may use a shared wireless network, supported Wi-Fi Direct, manual IP entry, or USB through an OTG adapter. Do not assume every printer supports each route.
- Output controls: Check the settings the printer actually exposes, such as media size, color or grayscale, orientation, page range, and duplex. Missing choices may reflect printer or service capabilities.
- App and layout: Confirm the app offers Print and that the preview looks right with the selected paper and orientation. If you need a file rather than a physical copy, Save as PDF skips the printer connection.
Wired USB printing
Samsung documents connecting a USB printer to a phone’s charging port with an OTG adapter and an appropriate USB cable. It also describes connecting a printer to a USB port on a DeX accessory when using DeX. This is an optional route, not a guarantee for every device: check that the phone port, adapter, cable, and printer connection are compatible. Samsung does not identify one universal adapter model. Fix common printing problems
There is no Print option
The app may not support printing its content. Look for a print action in Share, More, or the app menu; alternatively, save or share the content to an app that can print it. Samsung Support.
The printer does not appear
Check that the printer is on and configured for the connection method you intend to use, and confirm that the relevant print service is enabled in Settings. Scan for printers or select Add printer to enter an IP address if the printer is reachable and supports that setup. If the model requires a manufacturer plugin, install the correct one. These are documented options, not a guarantee that every printer or network will be discoverable. Samsung Support.

A setting such as color or duplex is missing
The available settings depend on the printer’s reported capabilities and the service handling the job. A missing option does not by itself indicate a fault with the phone. Android Developers: android.print; Samsung Support.
