Android Motion Assist adds small bubbles to the edges of your screen and moves them in response to your phone’s motion sensors. Google says these visual cues are designed to help your brain synchronize what your eyes see with what your body feels in a moving vehicle. It may help some passengers, but it is not a guaranteed fix: results vary, and Google warns that some people may feel worse.
What Motion Assist does
When Motion Assist is active, small bubbles appear near the edges of the phone display. Android Help says they move in real time according to the phone’s motion sensors, reflecting vehicle turns, acceleration and braking. The intent is to make the movement visible while you look at your screen.

Google describes this as a way to help synchronize visual input with the body’s sensations of movement. That is the feature’s design rationale, not evidence that it will prevent symptoms for every person. Google introduced Motion Assist as part of its September 2026 Android Drop; Android engineering VP Erik Kay described it as a subtle bubble overlay that moves with the vehicle.
What you need to use it
Google’s Android Help page specifies Android 17 or later and updated Google Play Services. It does not name specific compatible phone models, so check your device’s Android version and Play Services status rather than assuming a model supports the feature. See Google’s Motion Assist help page.

How to turn on Motion Assist
Find the setting
- Open Settings.
- Tap your user profile, then All services.
- Open Personal & device safety and select Motion Assist. You can also search Settings for “Motion assist.”
Choose automatic or manual control
- To have it start when you travel, enable Start in a moving vehicle. Google notes that the phone may not always detect that it is in a moving vehicle.
- For a manual switch, add the Motion Assist tile to Quick Settings; Google provides small and large tile options.
- When automatic activation starts, a silent notification appears. Tap it to turn Motion Assist off for that session.
Adjust the bubbles
Motion Assist settings let you change bubble opacity, color theme and shape, and choose whether color and shape randomize every few seconds. A live preview shows the appearance as you adjust it.
Does Motion Assist stop motion sickness?
No guarantee is established. Google says results vary, Motion Assist may not work for everyone, and a small percentage of users may experience worsened symptoms. The published materials describe how the feature works and its intended rationale; they do not provide controlled clinical results, a symptom-reduction percentage or a detailed account of its sensor-fusion algorithm. Treat it as an optional visual aid, not a medical treatment. If you feel discomfort, stop using it.

Use it only when it is safe
Google says not to use Motion Assist while operating a moving vehicle or in any situation that requires full attention to safety. It is intended for situations such as passenger phone use, not for drivers.

Android separately documents Remove animations for supported apps, for people who experience motion sickness, photosensitivity or seizure triggers. That option reduces certain animation effects; Motion Assist instead overlays movement-linked bubbles. Android’s documentation does not compare their effectiveness, so there is no supported basis for ranking one as more effective. See Android Accessibility Help.
