Android desktop mode can show multiple apps in resizable windows, but there are two distinct experiences: desktop windowing on a tablet’s own screen and a desktop session opened on a connected external display. The connected-display experience is available only on supported devices; it is not a universal feature of Android phones.
What Android desktop windowing looks like on a tablet
Android desktop windowing lets you use multiple apps at the same time in resizable windows. A taskbar along the bottom provides access to pinned apps, while each window has a customizable header bar with controls such as minimize and maximize. Android’s desktop windowing guide describes how to enter and leave this mode.

On a tablet, apps open full screen by default. To switch into desktop windowing, drag an app’s window handle, use its window menu, or use the keyboard shortcut documented in the guide. Other apps you open while in this state also appear in desktop windows. To return to full-screen apps, close the active windows, drag a window handle to the top of the screen, or use the guide’s keyboard shortcut.

Resizing changes the space available to an app, but it does not guarantee that the app will rearrange its interface into a desktop-style layout. Android applies compatibility behaviors to some apps; the result can still be awkward if the app was designed for a fixed phone screen.

Apps that lock to portrait
An app’s portrait orientation setting does not prevent its window from being resized into landscape in desktop windowing. The window can change shape even if the app was designed to stay in portrait orientation.
Apps declared non-resizable
Android can scale a non-resizable app as its window changes size, preserving the app’s aspect ratio. This may leave unused space rather than making the app’s controls and layout adapt to the larger window. Android warns that phone-sized layouts can stretch, overlap, or place controls off-screen in large or differently shaped windows. See the desktop windowing compatibility guidance.
Camera apps
Camera apps that lock orientation or declare themselves non-resizable receive special viewfinder treatment: the window can resize while the viewfinder retains its aspect ratio. This is intended to reduce stretched, sideways, or upside-down previews.

Window changes and app state
A window-size change can recreate an app’s activity by default. Apps need to preserve their state so that resizing does not discard what the user was doing. Android’s guidance for supporting different screen sizes explains how apps should respond to changing configurations.
How Android 16 changes large-screen app behavior
For apps targeting Android 16 (API level 36), Android ignores orientation, resizability, and aspect-ratio restrictions on displays with a smallest width of at least 600dp. This applies to relevant large-screen environments such as tablets, the inner displays of large-screen foldables, and desktop windowing. The rule changes how apps behave on those displays; it does not itself add external-display support to a device.
Android documents these exceptions:
- Displays with a smallest width below 600dp are outside this rule.
- Games identified through the app category flag are excepted.
- Users can opt into an app’s default behavior in aspect-ratio settings.
Developers can temporarily opt out by using PROPERTY_COMPAT_ALLOW_RESTRICTED_RESIZABILITY. Android says this opt-out will be eliminated for apps targeting API level 37. Details and qualifications are in the Android 16 behavior changes documentation.

Google Play will require apps to target API level 36 as of August 2026, according to its target API requirements page. That is a distribution requirement for apps on Google Play, not evidence that a particular phone can run a desktop session on an external monitor. Target API deadlines can also vary by app store.

Google announced connected-display support as generally available with Android 16 QPR3. On a supported Android phone or foldable connected to an external display, a desktop session starts on that display, where apps can use free-form or maximized windows and run alongside one another. Google describes the behavior in its Android connected-display announcement.
On a supported device that already supports desktop windowing, such as the tablet example in the announcement, the session can extend across both screens. Windows, content, and the cursor can move between the device display and the external display. The announcement specifically discusses supported Pixel and Samsung phones. It does not establish compatibility for every Android phone or for an unconfirmed model; check the device manufacturer’s specifications for the exact device.

For developers, Google recommends avoiding assumptions that an app will remain on a fixed Display object, querying display metrics dynamically, responding to density configuration changes, and supporting keyboard and mouse input. Android 16 QPR3 also includes compatibility treatments intended to scale windows and avoid app restarts when switching displays.
Tablet windowing or an external-display session?
| Experience | Where windows appear | What it offers | Support qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tablet desktop windowing | On the tablet display | Multiple resizable windows, a bottom taskbar, and window controls | Android documents this experience for tablets with desktop windowing support. |
| Connected-display desktop session on a phone or foldable | On the external display | A desktop session with free-form or maximized app windows and multitasking | Requires a supported device; Google’s announcement refers to supported Pixel and Samsung phones. |
| Connected-display session on a supported tablet | Across the tablet and external display | Windows, content, and cursor can move between the displays | Requires a supported tablet that already supports desktop windowing. |
What to check before connecting a monitor
Do not assume that any Android phone with a USB-C port can send video to a monitor. Verify that the exact phone or foldable supports external-display output, then check that the monitor accepts the connection you plan to use. A USB-C-to-HDMI adapter is useful only if the device supports video output over that connection. A keyboard and mouse are optional, but they can make a desktop session easier to use.
