Android Auto projects compatible navigation apps from your Android phone onto a compatible car display or aftermarket receiver. The phone supplies the apps; the car system provides the screen and controls. Connect by USB or, if both phone and car support it, wirelessly. Then choose Google Maps, Waze, or another compatible navigation app from the car display’s app launcher.
What Android Auto does when you navigate
Android Auto is phone projection, not a navigation system that is created by plugging any phone into any USB port. Google describes the technology as built into compatible Android phones so they can connect to a car display; a separate Android Auto app download from Google Play is not required for car-display use. The vehicle’s infotainment system or aftermarket receiver must also support Android Auto. A USB port alone does not establish compatibility. Google’s compatibility and connection troubleshooting guidance explains these distinctions.

When the connection is active, supported apps appear in the car interface. The phone runs the app and provides its navigation information, while the car display offers a driving-oriented way to view directions and interact with compatible functions. Google says navigation through Google Maps or a favorite compatible navigation app can include voice-guided directions, estimated arrival times, live traffic information, lane guidance, and more. Which functions appear depends on the app and the car’s supported input methods, rather than on Android Auto making every app behave identically. Google’s navigation instructions describe the available navigation experience.
What you need before connecting
- A compatible Android phone. For wired setup, Google lists Android 9.0 (Pie) or higher and an active data plan. Requirements may vary by phone, vehicle, and region, so check the current guidance for your specific setup. Google’s getting-started requirements cover phone and connection eligibility.
- A compatible car or receiver. Confirm that the vehicle’s infotainment system supports Android Auto; for an aftermarket receiver, check the receiver’s specifications. Having a screen or USB socket is not enough.
- A suitable connection. Wired use needs a compatible, high-quality USB cable. Wireless use needs a compatible phone and car, an active data plan, and 5 GHz Wi-Fi support. The first wireless setup uses Bluetooth pairing; Google recommends leaving Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services switched on while completing setup. Google’s setup instructions give the wired and wireless steps.
- A compatible navigation app. Google Maps, Waze, and other apps that support Android Auto can be selected on the car display. App availability and controls are not universal.
For wired use, do not assume that every cable will carry a reliable data connection with every car. Google specifically cautions that “Not all USB cables will work with all cars.” Check that the cable’s connector fits both devices and that it is suitable for data, not merely charging. No particular cable model is required by the cited guidance. Google’s troubleshooting page recommends checking the cable when a wired connection fails.

Wired and wireless Android Auto compared
| Check | Wired | Wireless |
|---|---|---|
| Phone and car support | Both must support Android Auto. | Both must support wireless Android Auto. |
| Connection requirements | A compatible USB cable; Google lists Android 9.0 (Pie) or higher for the phone. | 5 GHz Wi-Fi support, with Bluetooth pairing for first-time setup. |
| Data plan | Google lists an active data plan. | Google lists an active data plan. |
| Initial setup | Connect the cable and follow the prompts on the phone and car display. | Pair the phone and car over Bluetooth, then follow the prompts; Android Auto should start, although you may need to select it on the display. |
The requirements in this comparison follow Google’s setup guidance; availability can depend on the particular phone, vehicle, and region. There is no universally best connection mode established by those requirements. Wired use depends on the cable and vehicle connection, while wireless use depends on both devices’ wireless support and the required 5 GHz Wi-Fi capability. Choose based on what your phone and car actually support. See Google’s setup instructions.
Set up Android Auto in your car
Complete setup while the vehicle is in Park and the infotainment system is on. Google’s setup process differs slightly depending on whether you are using a cable or wireless projection. Google’s full setup steps should be checked if prompts on your device differ.
For a wired connection
- Start the car and turn on its infotainment system. Keep the vehicle in Park.
- Connect the phone to the car’s Android Auto-compatible USB port using a high-quality cable that fits both devices and supports data.
- Follow the prompts on the phone and car screen. If Android Auto does not appear automatically, look for the Android Auto option in the infotainment system.
- Once connected, open the car display’s app launcher and select the navigation app you want to use.
For a wireless connection
- Turn on the car’s infotainment system and leave the vehicle in Park.
- Make sure Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services are on for the first-time setup.
- Pair the phone and car over Bluetooth, following the prompts shown on each device.
- Wait for Android Auto to start. If it does not open on its own, select Android Auto on the car display.
- Open the app launcher and choose a compatible navigation app.
Choose and use a navigation app
Open the app launcher on the car display to find the navigation apps available to Android Auto. To browse for compatible apps, Google directs users to Google Play. A signed-in Google Account and the personalization setting are needed to see all compatible apps there, so the list shown may depend on account and settings. Google’s guide to downloading Android Auto apps explains app visibility.

After opening a navigation app, you can request a destination by voice or use the display controls supported by that app and car. Google gives these example voice commands:
Take me homeNavigate to [location]Directions to [shop name]Stop navigation
If the system returns several possible locations, confirm that the selected result is the destination you intend. This is especially useful when a place name is shared by multiple locations. Google’s turn-by-turn navigation instructions cover voice requests and destination selection.
Typing and other controls
Typing a destination on the car display is restricted while driving: Google says the vehicle must be in Park for the keyboard to be available. Waze’s instructions likewise note that typing may require Park and the handbrake. Where typing is unavailable, use a supported voice request or select a saved destination instead of trying to enter text while moving. Google’s Waze-on-Android-Auto guidance describes its controls.

Waze guidance includes saved places and the ability to report incidents such as traffic, crashes, hazards, bad weather, blocked lanes, and map issues. These examples are Waze functions; they should not be treated as a feature checklist for every navigation app. Input support can differ, too: Google notes that some Android Auto apps are not yet compatible with touchpad input. Check the controls your particular car and app expose before relying on a specific interaction. Waze’s Android Auto help and Google’s navigation help provide app-specific details.
Android Auto versus Android Automotive
Android Auto and Android Automotive (AAOS) are different configurations. Android Auto projects supported apps from a connected phone onto a compatible car display. Android Automotive is an operating system built into the vehicle. For supported Google built-in vehicles, Waze documents a built-in version that can be used without plugging in a phone. That version may not include every feature or setting found in the mobile Waze app. Waze’s guide to Waze built-in for cars explains the built-in option.
This distinction matters when a car appears to have navigation or Waze available even when no phone is connected: the vehicle may be running an in-car system rather than projecting the phone’s app through Android Auto. The availability of built-in apps depends on the supported vehicle system; it does not mean that Android Auto itself works without a connected phone.

Fix common Android Auto connection problems
Start by identifying whether the problem is compatibility, the connection, or the app. If Android Auto has never worked with a particular car, first verify that the car or receiver supports it. For a wired setup, confirm the cable fits and supports data; for wireless, confirm phone and car wireless support. Then check the infotainment system’s settings. Google’s troubleshooting guide recommends these checks and offers device-specific guidance.
Android Auto does not start over USB
- Confirm that the vehicle or aftermarket receiver supports Android Auto; a USB port alone does not make it compatible.
- Try a compatible, high-quality cable. Not every USB cable works with every car.
- Check that Android Auto is enabled in the infotainment system.
- If you use an aftermarket receiver, check the receiver manufacturer’s site for firmware updates.
Change one item at a time where practical, then reconnect and follow any prompts on both screens. This makes it easier to tell whether the issue was the cable, a disabled setting, or the receiver’s software. Google recommends checking for receiver firmware updates when troubleshooting aftermarket equipment. See Google’s troubleshooting instructions.

The phone connects to one car but not another
A successful connection with one vehicle does not prove that another car or receiver supports Android Auto or wireless projection. Check the second system’s compatibility and setup requirements independently. If the phone has previously connected to cars, Google suggests clearing previously connected cars and pairing again when it connects to one car but not another. Follow the phone’s Android Auto settings and prompts to remove the old connection, then repeat setup with the intended vehicle. Google’s troubleshooting page covers previously connected cars.

A compatible app or control is missing
Check the car display’s app launcher, then confirm that the app is compatible with Android Auto and installed or available for your account. If you are browsing Google Play and do not see the full compatible-app list, check that you are signed in to a Google Account and that personalization is enabled. A missing control may reflect app-specific support: Android Auto apps do not all support the same inputs, including touchpads. Google’s app download guidance explains visibility, while its Waze controls guidance notes that input support can vary.
Which setup should you choose?
Use the connection your particular devices support, then choose a navigation app by the tasks and controls you need rather than assuming one app or connection is best for everyone. Before setting out, check:
- Whether Android Auto is supported by both the phone and the vehicle or receiver.
- For wired use, whether you have a compatible data cable and are using the car’s Android Auto-capable connection.
- For wireless use, whether the phone and car support it and the phone has 5 GHz Wi-Fi capability.
- Whether the app you want appears in the launcher and supports the features and controls you plan to use, such as voice destination entry, saved places, or incident reporting.
- Whether the car must be in Park for the action you want to perform, particularly typing a destination.
These checks separate three issues that are easy to confuse: whether the car can project Android Auto at all, whether the chosen connection method is supported, and whether a particular navigation app offers the desired feature in that car. Google’s setup guide, navigation guide, and troubleshooting guide cover those separate parts of the experience.
