A 2026 study argues that phosphorus recycling and sulfate availability may have helped make oxygen levels unstable during the Great Oxidation Episode. The finding offers a way to think about what scientists might investigate on ocean-bearing worlds—but it is evidence about ancient Earth, not a detection of extraterrestrial life.
The question: how did oxygen persist after it first rose?
The Great Oxidation Episode (GOE) was a protracted transition, not a single sudden event. The study describes its first rise in atmospheric oxygen as spanning approximately 2.43 to 2.06 billion years ago. Scientists have sought to understand how oxygen could become established and how its levels changed during that interval.
In a paper published in Nature Communications in 2026, Lewis J. Alcott, Benjamin J. W. Mills, Andrey Bekker, Zidong Peng and Simon W. Poulton examine phosphorus cycling during the final two glaciations of the GOE. Their interpretation links nutrient supply, sulfur chemistry, ocean redox conditions and biological activity in feedbacks that could have contributed to oxygen instability.
What the rocks can—and cannot—show
The team analyzed drill-core shale from South Africa’s Rooihoogte and Timeball Hill formations, dated in the paper to about 2.32–2.25 billion years ago. The strata record shallow marine environments connected to the ocean and environmental changes around post-glacial conditions.

Rather than sampling an ancient ocean or measuring its atmosphere directly, the researchers analyzed geochemical evidence preserved in the rocks. They measured redox-sensitive trace elements and separated phosphorus into operationally defined iron-bound, authigenic, organic-bound and crystalline apatite phases. They treated iron-bound, authigenic and organic-bound phosphorus together as “reactive” phosphorus: pools considered potentially available to biology.
The team combined those measurements with existing sulfur-isotope and organic-carbon records and a biogeochemical model. The rock record is the observed evidence; the broader account of ocean-wide cycling and atmospheric oxygen is a reconstruction informed by that evidence and modeling, not a direct oxygen measurement.

How phosphorus and sulfate could have influenced oxygen
Phosphorus supplies a limit on biological growth
Phosphorus is essential to life, but the amount present in rock or seawater is not the same as the amount organisms can use. Its chemical form and how it is recycled affect whether it is available to support biological productivity. Study co-author Andrey Bekker, a UC Riverside geologist, explained the method’s purpose: “We can now separate the phosphorus that was available to organisms from phosphorus that was essentially locked away.”
Glacial aftermath may have delivered nutrients
The authors propose that post-glacial weathering supplied phosphorus and sulfate to the ocean. More available phosphorus could stimulate productivity. If more organic matter was then buried rather than broken down, that burial could help oxygen accumulate.

Changing oxygen and sulfur chemistry could alter phosphorus recycling
As oxygenation encouraged oxidative weathering and sulfate delivery, sulfate-reducing microbes and shifting ocean redox conditions could affect how phosphorus was retained or returned to seawater. In the authors’ proposed mechanism, phosphorus released back into the water could support renewed productivity and organic-carbon burial, feeding back into oxygen production. Changes in those conditions could later weaken or alter the feedback.
This is not a claim that oxygen simply climbed in a steady line, or that one nutrient alone controlled the atmosphere. The paper’s central interpretation is a coupled, changing system in which phosphorus recycling, sulfate availability and redox conditions may have contributed to instability.

What this could mean for the search for life
The astrobiology relevance is a framework for interpreting environments, not a new biosignature or a life-detection result. The study suggests that oxygen, nutrients and biological processes can evolve together. For scientists considering ocean-bearing worlds, that is a reminder to interpret chemical clues in environmental context: a measured or inferred oxygen level by itself does not establish that life produced it, and nutrient availability can shape whether biology might flourish.
The researchers’ evidence comes from ancient Earth. It provides no direct measurements from exoplanets, Europa, Enceladus or any other world, and it does not show that those places share Earth’s phosphorus cycle. Its value for planetary exploration is comparative: Earth’s geological record helps researchers think about which interacting chemical conditions may matter when assessing habitability and possible biosignatures.

What the study changes—and what remains open
The authors argue that oxygen levels fluctuated more dramatically after the GOE began than previously believed. That is an interpretation of the geological record and model, not a single numerical estimate of how much atmospheric oxygen changed. The study also raises a question about early complex life: if oxygen was available for extended intervals, oxygen alone may not explain when organisms with more oxygen-dependent metabolisms appeared. It does not settle the timing or cause of complex life’s evolution.
The primary paper, “A nutrient control on oxygenation dynamics during Earth’s Great Oxidation Episode,” appeared in Nature Communications 17, article 10294 (2026). The journal record lists publication on 27 August 2026 and a version of record dated 29 September 2026: read the study. UC Riverside’s accessible explanation and Bekker’s comments are in its 29 September 2026 summary.
