An MCP server can give a watsonx Orchestrate agent access to a purpose-built tool: the agent interprets a request, then calls the tool to do work that needs exact execution. IBM’s factorial example shows the flow end to end—build and test the server, import its tools, create an agent, and test the result. It is a useful way to understand agentic AI, but the documented tutorial does not establish a particular author’s personal experience or what changed in their thinking.
What MCP adds to a watsonx Orchestrate agent
A language model can interpret a conversational request and decide which action to take. An MCP server exposes tools that an agent can call to perform defined operations, such as an exact calculation or a task requiring access to an external system. In IBM’s factorial example, the agent handles the conversational request while a server tool calculates the factorial or counts its digits.

This division of work is a practical illustration of agentic AI: the model directs a task, and a tool carries out a bounded operation. MCP provides an interface for discovering and calling external tools; it does not, by itself, guarantee that a tool is secure, correct, or portable across every implementation. IBM’s hands-on walkthrough is titled “Connecting to MCP tools with watsonx Orchestrate”, by Ahmed Azraq and Moises Dominguez Garcia, published 17 December 2025.

How IBM’s factorial demonstration works
The tutorial uses the watsonx Orchestrate Agent Development Kit (ADK) to show a complete path from a local MCP server to an agent that can use its tools:
#1 Best Overall
- 【Powerful Load-bearing】12U Network Rack Open Frame is constructed from durable cold rolled steel; Rack shelf supports enhance stability, wall-mounted capacity of 130lbs, the ground-mounted up to 260lbs
- 【Considerate Designs】Open-frame layout, including a top panel adding space, anti-slip shelf stops fixing devices and compatible racks for stack and expansion to meet requirements of home server rack
- 【Complete Accessories】A 12U open frame server rack, two ventilated shelves, four shelf stops, four velcro straps and a set of equipment mounting screws
- 【Versatile Application】Ideal for space-efficient multi-device setups in warehouses, retail, classrooms, offices and more; Excellent choices as AV Rack/IT Rack
- 【Effortless Setup】 Network Rack includes hardware, a comprehensive manual, mounting hole drilling template and an online assembly video to simplify setup
- Create the MCP server and its tools. The example provides factorial-related functionality.
- Test the tools locally. IBM’s guide uses MCP Inspector to list the tools and run them, so the server can be checked before connecting it to an agent.
- Import the MCP tools into watsonx Orchestrate. The platform needs access to the server’s tools before an agent can use them.
- Create an agent that consumes the tools. Give the agent a clear scope; IBM’s example describes an agent for precise factorial values or digit counts.
- Test the agent. Check that it interprets the request and uses the relevant tool to produce the result.
The key design lesson is to make the agent’s role explicit and keep tool responsibilities legible. An agent description should tell users what kinds of requests it handles, while the tool should perform its defined operation. Importing a remote MCP server
A local test server and a remotely hosted server differ mainly in how Orchestrate reaches them and how access is configured. IBM’s documentation describes an ADK-based remote-server route: install and initialize the ADK, create and configure a connection, set credentials, then import a toolkit. The documented example uses a server URL, the --kind mcp option, --transport "streamable_http", tool selection, and an app ID with orchestrate toolkits import.

- Save valuable floor space: 6U wall mount server cabinet Dimensions: 13.78" H x21.65" W x17.72" D.Maximum mounting depth is 14.2"
- Keep critical network equipment secure: glass door and side panels are lockable to prevent unauthorized access. Front door can be installed on either side of the front of the cabinet to satisfy your door swing orientation preference
- Easy equipment configuration: Fully adjustable mounting rails and numbered U positions, with square holes for easy equipment mounting with top and bottom punch-out panels for easy cable access
- Durability: Made of high quality cold rolled steel holds up to 110lb (50kg) (Easy Assembly Required)
- PCI & HIPPA and EIA/ECA-310-E compliant
The exact command, authentication method, and available transport depend on the server and environment. Treat IBM’s remote integration instructions as the reference for that documented route, and verify the current ADK instructions and your deployment’s requirements before using a command in production.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute| Consideration | Local test flow | Remote import flow |
|---|---|---|
| Where the server runs | Locally for development and validation in the tutorial | At a server URL reachable by the deployment |
| How tools are checked or connected | MCP Inspector lists and runs the example tools | ADK connection and credential setup precede toolkit import |
| Transport detail in the cited material | The tutorial demonstrates local testing | IBM’s documented example uses streamable_http |
One documented caveat concerns Presto: data-asset queries may require system instructions that enable the LIST_DATA_ASSETS and QUERY_DATA_ASSETS tools. This is specific to that use case, not a general prerequisite for importing every MCP server.

What to verify before relying on the integration
- Reachability: For a remote server, confirm the Orchestrate environment can reach its URL.
- Credentials: Configure the authentication required by that server and environment rather than assuming the example’s setup applies everywhere.
- Tool selection: Import only the tools the agent needs, then test that the agent invokes them for the intended requests.
- Scope and instructions: Make the agent’s purpose clear, and add any use-case-specific system instructions the tools require.
- Catalog access: IBM’s Discover catalog documentation describes agents, MCP servers, tools, and apps; what a user can access may depend on organizational usability settings.
Where direct MCP scheduling fits
Importing a server’s tools for an agent is distinct from using direct MCP tools to schedule agents or workflows. IBM documents direct scheduling for programmatic use cases such as unattended pipelines and integrations that need deterministic structured input. That route requires an IAM bearer token and the relevant agent or workflow UUID, and it includes MCP session initialization. See IBM’s documentation on scheduling agents and workflows with direct MCP tools for that separate integration pattern.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What this example does—and does not—show
The factorial demonstration makes the architecture concrete: the agent understands what the user is asking, and an MCP tool performs the exact operation. It shows a practical route from local tool validation to an Orchestrate agent that can use the imported tools. It is not evidence that MCP guarantees correctness or security, nor a basis for ranking agent platforms or server frameworks. ADK commands, transports, product interfaces, authentication requirements, catalog access, and trial availability can change; check current IBM documentation and the requirements of your region and deployment.
