A synthetic polymer called poly(vinyl alcohol), or PVA, helped improve recovery of sheep and human red blood cells after freezing in a 2014 laboratory study. The proposed benefit is that PVA slows ice-crystal growth as samples thaw. That is a promising cryopreservation finding—not evidence that ordinary PVA products preserve blood, other cells, or organs in clinical use.
How does an antifreeze polymer protect cells as they thaw?
Freezing and thawing can damage cells when ice crystals form or grow. During thawing, small crystals can recrystallize into larger ones, which may injure nearby cells. Antifreeze proteins found in some organisms can slow ice-crystal growth; researchers have studied synthetic materials that imitate part of that activity.

In a 2014 study, Robert C. Deller, Manu Vatish, Daniel A. Mitchell, Matthew I. Gibson and colleagues investigated PVA, a synthetic biomimetic polymer. They described it as capable of slowing ice-crystal growth in a manner similar to antifreeze (glyco)proteins. The paper’s abstract says: “Here we employ a synthetic, biomimetic, polymer, which is capable of slowing the growth of ice crystals in a manner similar to antifreeze (glyco)proteins to enhance the cryopreservation of sheep and human red blood cells.” Nature Communications, 2014.

The study reported that 0.1 wt% PVA was sufficient for significant post-freezing recovery in its experiments. With that amount, the authors reported recovery above 40% for ovine and human erythrocytes without an organic solvent. The abstract contrasted this with solvent-based strategies using over 20 wt% organic solvent; that comparison is specific to the paper and should not be read as a description of every cryopreservation protocol.

These are laboratory results for red blood cells under the study’s conditions. They do not establish that PVA will work for other cell types, preserve whole blood or organs, or improve clinical outcomes. Recovery after freezing is also not the same as proving that recovered cells perform every intended function.
How do synthetic polymers and antifreeze proteins differ in the studies?
Researchers have tested both synthetic mimics such as PVA and natural or recombinant antifreeze proteins. Their results come from different experiments, so they are not a head-to-head comparison and cannot establish which approach is better.

Why do cell format and delivery matter?
The 2019 study found that extracellular type III antifreeze protein substantially improved recovery in its mammalian cell-monolayer system, while intracellular delivery showed less benefit and the protein was less effective when the same cells were cryopreserved in suspension. A result in a layer of attached cells therefore cannot simply be transferred to cells floating in suspension—or to a different material and cell type.

Is slowing ice recrystallization the whole explanation?
Not necessarily. A 2022 paper argued that ice-recrystallization inhibition alone is insufficient to explain antifreeze proteins’ cryopreservation effects. Cell-membrane interactions may also contribute, so a polymer or protein’s apparent protection cannot always be reduced to one ice-control mechanism. 2022 study.
Together, these findings make concentration, warming conditions, cell type, cell format, and where the protective material is delivered important experimental details. They also caution against treating results from separate studies as directly comparable.

Can antifreeze polymers or proteins preserve blood or organs for patients?
The cited work does not establish routine clinical use of PVA or antifreeze proteins to preserve human blood or organs. The PVA result concerns laboratory experiments with red blood cells, while the protein studies examine particular cell systems. None of these findings by itself demonstrates a safe, effective clinical preservation method for a transfusion or transplant.
Retail PVA powder should not be treated as a cell-preservation product. The studies do not establish that ordinary consumer-grade material matches the tested polymer or is suitable for biological use. The 2025 snow flea protein report is also early research in a specific cell line, not evidence of a clinical treatment.
